I would suggest to eat a bit more probiotics since you say your stomach is sensitive. I started with Greek yogurt too. But now I eat fermented foods like mentioned above, and drink kombucha. They are good for your digestive system. The thing about buying fermented foods is the USDA or FDA or whatever need to have commercial brands to pasteurize their food, so even like Bubbie's brand saurkraut, though it starts with probiotics, once it's pasteurized all that goodness is gone. Even with kim chi! Unless you can find a korean restaurant that makes their own. Store bought all the good bacteria is killed in the pasteurization process.

I read your post to assume that you use bottled dressings? I don't have any salad dressing here. You would be surprised how much sugar is in your salad dressings. Esp the low/no fat ones. Even at buffets, I use the marinated/pickled veggies as my "dressings" and if I need something creamy, I add greek yogurt or cottage cheese.

A lot of asian food, esp south east asian food is a mix of salty, sweet, tangy, spicy, so it hits all the cravings. The key is balance. Go check out that new market. If you buy one thing, I would suggest to buy a bottle of fish sauce. It's like soy sauce but more complex. You use it as a seasoning, not a condiment. It's mostly salty but a flavor you just can't get with soy sauce. It's essential to make nuoc mam which is the Viet all-round dipping sauce, with vinegar, sugar, chile and lots of garlic, plus usually pickled carrot and daikon. I use that for a lot of my salads too. I make a batch and keep it in my fridge. A bottle of fish sauce is so cheap. Like $1-2 and it lasts for years bc you only use a few drops each time. Viet food is one of the most healthy Asian foods out there. Chinese is like the worst LOL. If you really can't deal with the fish in fish sauce, there is also Maggi sauce. They also sell this at latino markets. It's like soy sauce but better. It's way more pricey than soy sauce though, and if it's from France it's even more. A bottle can go for $12-20. We buy the ones not from France. LOL It's great on fried eggs.

Sorry if I"m rambling. I love talking about food and I"m even more happy if I can get someone to try something new.

You know another thing I thought of. I think you said you can't cook fish bc your family complains of the smell? I think that was you. Try making ceviche. It's one of my favorite things to eat. I get swai. It's cheap, it doesn't smell, and if you do cook it, it's virtually impossible to overcook. The main thing, is it doesn't smell!

I buy frozen fillets. Defrost and pat dry with paper towels. Cut up into 1/2" cubes. Add in with diced cucumber, tomato, onion, carrot (not all put in carrot but it's a must for me for the texture contrast), jalapeno if you like spicy, cilantro if you like it (I happen to HATE it), lots of lime or lemon juice to cover everything, and salt. Let it sit in the fridge overnight at least, but 24 hrs is better. I serve it with sliced cukes and avocado, topped with your fave hot sauce and more salt and lemon/lime if you want. Low fat, low calorie. The only bad thing is the salt if you use a lot. The acid in the citrus "cooks" it. Don't worry you won't get sick.

I know my salad dressings aren't healthy, I plan to move to something better in the future, but not now.

Kombucha isn't something I'd risk, I have almost no immunoglobulin A so my mucus membranes aren't protected. I wouldn't risk ceviche either, it sounds good though. I want to try making my own kefir, I like the store bought stuff but it's too expensive to buy regularly. Kefir helps keep my stomach ok on antibiotics.
I also have IBS and acid reflux.

I don't like soy sauce, too salty and not fond of the taste, but thanks for the suggestions.

My main food goals are won't make me sick, easy to make, not too expensive, minimal time/energy, and can be made ahead of time. All the goals don't have to be met with every food.

I like to experiment, but it has to be done carefully and kept pretty bland or I have to be willing to suffer. My best friend's mom is half Puerto Rican and they spent years in Texas. I've tried a bunch of different stuff with them, but I usually end up sick.
Animal fats, too much of other fats (greasy cheese, butter, fried foods), too much acid, too spicy, and certain combinations (such as milky alcoholic drinks) are my main triggers.
I can't even eat spaghetti sauce.

It took years to figure out what I can eat and what I'll pay for, so I'm not the easiest person to suggest things for, but thanks for trying.

What I have been eating lately is raisin bran, oatmeal with fruit and nuts, a lot of salads often with chicken. I guess part of the problem is now that I am changing my diet I'm not really sure what to eat.

My health focus has been lowering my cholesterol which I recently found out is high. I don't eat a lot of sweets, I like junk food but don't feel like I eat a lot of it. What I do eat a lot of it is sausage, bacon and potatoes.also, I really like butter and cheese and cream and eggs. I guess I never thought of these things as health foods per se but I didn't think of them as bad foods in part because they are whole, Real foods. A lot of the low-cholesterol concepts that I hear talked about include things like margarine which has never been a part of my life and my understanding is that our body doesn't know what to do with margarine because it is not a real food. I like vegetables and should probably find more ways to incorporate them in my diet, salads have been helping. I do not really care for fruits but I do like berries, if you're trying to eat anything in season though I think except for summer that pretty much leaves me with apples.

I value the concept of fermented foods and I like the sauerkraut that I make but for the most part I do not like a lot of fermented options. I have never really had digestive issues myself. I am a bit overweight but not terribly, not an athlete but relatively physically active. High cholesterol is a hereditary issue and I can figure out to cut down on the bacon but am a little confused about what j should be eating besides vegetables since dairy products, eggs and meat (the staples of my universe) seem to be a cholesterol sin. ???

Lilah, I think you should research low carb diets and their effects on cholesterol. I've seen a lot of people say on forums that it helped them, but haven't looked into it deeper than that.
I'm not talking about super low less than 20g diets, more like less than 100g. That's basically what I'm trying to do, but I'm not counting right now.

It seems like the combination of high fat and high carb is more dangerous than either by itself.

I totally agree about margarine, it's disgusting and unhealthy, I feel the same way about artificial sweeteners (including stevia). I stick to butter, coconut oil, and some olive oil. It's ridiculous how much stuff they put artificial sweeteners in, I'd rather eat something less sweet.

My mom has had high cholesterol as long as I can remember, and she isn't overweight and never has been. She's 4'11" and 95lbs. She was always told to not eat a lot of salt. Not only that, but shrimp, lobster, etc is high in cholesterol. Quail eggs are the highest in cholesterol out of all foods, in that tiny little thing. Also the sausage, bacon, etc has a lot of salt. I would suggest eating more fish if you want to try to cut out more meat.

Personally I like full fat yogurt and mayo, etc better than the low fat versions. They are more satisfying and I end up using less. I tried the low fat stuff before and it didn't have the right taste and I ended up using a whole lot more and it still didn't taste right. Like if light mayo is 1/3 less fat but I end up using double the amount I'm not saving anything. Also all the low fat dressings and mayo add a lot of sugar to help the taste.

I probably do more 'bread' than I think I do. I heard the cdc is re formulating their reccomendathons regarding cholesterol, maybe they will drop the margerine idea. We do a lot of fish, especially salmon. I know my smoked meats are salty but I don't add salt to almost anything! My old roommate complained miserably I do out too much sugar in my coffee and was taught by my father to coat my salmon in mayonnaise when I cook it (it's amazing!) which I have recently stopped doing. Also, I use salted butter, that could be a contributing factor as I do a lot of butter- been trying to cut that down and use more olive oil, just bought a jar of coconut oil- now to start using it! I quit drinking my lattes breve maybe nine months ago or longer, then quit getting them extra Carmel so I am very proud of that- at the time it was so hard but now the idea of breve and extra sweet kind makes me ill. I stopped putting a half pound of bacon in my green beans- only three or four slices now. Stopping grating cheese onto my steamed broccoli, only butter now- yikes! See? There's where I fall through the cracks....lol. I decided to cut down my regular coffee consumption rather than cut the sugar too much. I do have a glass or two of red wine usually once every week to two weeks but could go either direction with that- none for weeks or a little more than that one week. Oh! And we go out to eat on Sunday's too! The weekends are my downfall, I do pretty good during the weekdays.

OMG mayo coated salmon? I want to try that now! LOL Salmon is already very rich but sounds amazing.

I use unsalted butter just for that reason. I like to salt while cooking so if I use butter there is already salt in it. I feel like sweet cream butter seems more buttery to me. Salted reminds me of margerine.

Try roasting your veggies in the oven with just garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper. The texture is so much better than steamed or boiled and you don't really need the butter.

I'm no longer a coffee drinker, but when I was, I noticed it was more of a social thing. Co workers going on coffee break so I would go also. But I tried different kinds of coffee and found a few types that I didn't even need sugar. Just put in some cream and that was it.

My coffee is dark, strong and delicious- my love says he is not sure I am actually putting creamer in my coffee that maybe I am just tapping the carton to the edge of my cup, lol, so the cream there is not my downfall! I do out too much sugar in but it is less than It was and I think for me cutting down the amount of coffee instead of changing it too drastically was best. The salmon coated in mayonnaise- oh yes, you need to try it!! Delish but since I do eat salmon often, maybe I need to do that only knce in a while. I do love my lattes but that is not an everyday thing for sure. I think switching to unsalted butter would be a great option for me, good suggestion.

You might do better putting a little cheese on your broccoli instead of butter, I know when I do that it's less calories, but of course salt may be an issue for you. Lemon juice on broccoli is good too, I love lemon.

I used to drink coffee like my grandmom, tons of light cream and sugar, basically coffee ice cream. I gradually cut the amounts down over a few months and now I just use milk.

I also use a digital food scale, I originally bought it for calorie counting. Even though I'm not formally tracking right now it helps portion out high calorie items. It's also useful for cooking, like measuring out a cup of peanut butter is messy and inaccurate, with the scale I figure out how many grams are in a cup and use a knife to put it directly in the mixing bowl.

So you just coat the salmon and pan fry? Fillet or steaks? I love salmon steaks bc of the belly part and the skin. I get it nice and crispy.

Also for the broccoli maybe try it with hummus. I hate raw broccoli but if you cook it the exact it cold or room temp w the hummus, it's good. I will eat raw carrots in hummus.

Lemon juice on broccoli sounds very good. I am sure that portion control is an issue for me, I think I am better than I used to be but I think if I focused on specific areas of improvement portion management would be one of the areas for sure!

I do like hummus! Do you mean to cook it with hummus??? When we are talking portion control hummus certainly comes into play I could eat that stuff by the gallon I swear!

I mostly eat salmon fillets, my dad is an avid fisherman and spends time not he boat here in Oregon and Alaska as well and my family is blessed with delicious fish! Also i mostly bake my salmon, though I often pan fry halibut. I take slices of butter and arrange them at the bottom of a tinfoil coated baking dish, place the salmon inside and coat it in a layer of mayonnaise and top it with chopped garlic, dill weed and pepper and cover it in lemon juice and slices of lemon- I am heavy on garlic all the time. I make a tinfoil tent to bake it in and it comes our delicious and moist and the coating of mayonnaise deliciousness that comes out of this venture....let me just say you find yourself seeking out the pieces that are well coated and picking off the top half, it is heavenly.

OH my goodness. Salmon en papillotte. I was just thinking on the pan with mayo.

Not cooking with hummus, but just to make my own hummus with blanches veggies or raw veggies. I don't think you need to portion control hummus unless it has a lot of oil in it. Chickpeas are so healthy!

Your salmon sounds very good, except for the mayonnaise. I hate mayonnaise, if I made it I'd probably use yogurt.

I'm getting my infusion today, my blood pressure is 105/60 even after getting a bag of fluid. My BP has to be taken regularly during the infusion and eating salt doesn't raise it either. I forgot to try making the homemade gatorade so I'm trying to hydrate with just water, it doesn't work nearly as well.
