| Crate Training Day 1 - my heart is broken!!!!!!!!! So I got her a crate and started introducing her to it slowly this weekend. Every time I put her in there she SCREAMS and doesn't stop!! I ignore her but she never stops... I figure some of this is normal so I'm trying to be tough. Today was my first day at work. I put her in there at about 7:30 this morning and went to work. My roommate came home at 11 and let her out for 30 minutes and put her back in at noon. I came home at 5:15 this evening and she was SCREAMING again. I tried to wait until she calmed down, but she wouldn't and my roommates were trying to watch TV, so I let her out and when I took her out she was covered in her own pee!! I didn't think the crate was too big and I put a little bed that covered the entire bottom in there (she loves the bed) but yet she peed on herself. We went for a walk and she did her business, I came back and washed her off... and now she's running around the house crying at the top of her lungs like she doesn't know what to do. She won't play or anything.. just running around confused like she doesn't even where she is. Is this normal?? guys I don't know what to do! Should I leave her in there for the first part of teh day and have my roommate bring her out after lunch until I get home?? She's used to being in my room with a babygate up... but she kept peeing on her pad but pooping under the bed... please help... i can't stand to see my little girl like this!

| Tough love is sooooooooo hard and listening to them crying DOES break your heart...I never crated my dogs as puppies so I cant give you any good advice..they go in their crates while we are away without problems but as puppies they were with me 24/7 even in bed...I worked at home at the time so it was much easier. I hope it gets better for you and that someone can offer you some good advice.. Dawn |

| How long has she been used to freedom? I think that makes a difference. If she didn't get used to being in your room overnight, she's not going to get used to the crate overnight. Tough love is hard, but if you are going to resent her pooping on the floor, then it's best to get the training done...for both of you. I know I would resent my house smelling like pee and poop eventually, so we are very strict about potty time. Chloe fusses if she knows we can hear her, although there are times she spends in her kennel and doesn't mind a bit. It's tough. |

| Wow, I feel your pain. It is really hard because these dogs are so tiny and so sweet and can wrap their little hearts around you, however, the reality is as someone said, do you want this dog housetrained or are you ok with her hitting the peepad now and again? Its hard when we work all day, the reality is it might be too much for her to hold it that long. How small is your baby? My guy can hold it from 8am till 115p when I stop home but he is also almost 8lbs (7mos old). If your Yorkie is very small she might continue to pee in the crate until she is able to hold it longer. This is the hard part of the breed that people don't realize when they see how small and cute they are. Is there any way that you can take a few days off work and really work with the crate issue? Like put her in for say 1/2hr and leave the house, or stand outside the door and listen, and then let her out for 1/2hr etc. Leave some music on maybe when you leave. When Bentley first went in his crate when I went to work (even though the breeder said he was crate trained, which he might have been) he barked and howled (I listened outside the door). It killed me, but I left for work in hopes he quieted down. Now, he goes in the crate (not happily) but he doesn't bark and carry on and when I get home he doesn't bark he waits until I open the crate door (which I never do unless he IS quiet). You are right, just day 1, its going to take some major willpower and work, and I know when you have roomies it makes it doubly hard and stressful because you don't want your roomies getting angry about a whining dog etc. Hang in there.. My question is.. should I stick with this method even if she continues to pee in her crate, or should I try something else? Like a playpen with peepads in the corner?? I can't really afford one right now... but I'll do whatever I have to to make this work. I love my dog and I take good care of her.. I don't want to torture her, but people say you have to be firm and just do it. It still breaks my heart..

This little playpen has been my LIFESAVER...she also sleeps in here at night because I'm not going to let her sleep with me until she's fully potty trained. http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...+play+n+go&N=2 I wish you all the best, because I KNOW how hard it is

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I also used the playpen with a pee pad for Cali and it worked very well, she never peed on her bedding at the other end. But she also will not go outside only on pee pads. Pixie was 13 months when I got her and not housebroken so I tried the playpen with her she screamed so bad and finally chewed her way through it and got out. So I just put pads down all over my bedroom and for 2 weeks watched her like a hawk and got her trained. She still has accidents here and there. Good luck she is still young and it does get better.

| You said your baby is only 4 1/2 months old that means she can hold her pee for 5 1/2 hours. (1 per month, plus an extra hr). If she is in the crate more than the alotted time, she will relieve her self. Make sure the crate is big enough that she can only stand and turn around. Put toys in the crate to keep her from being bored. When u are at home crate her every hr or so for 15 mins at a time so she can get use to being in the crate. Hopefully this helps. It worked for me. It was hard to crate Dior because she was my first baby and she cried alot when she was in there, but after a week or so she got use to it.

| I also put one of my t-shirts in the crate (after I'd worn it all day) so it would smell like me and Mugzy could be - a little - comforted that way. Did you ever try a Kong ball? It's one of those toys that is hollow - with a very small opening - that you could fill with his food and cover the opening with peanut butter. It kept my Molly busy forever (she's a Malamute/Coonhound mix). I don't know if it might make him have to poop though after he's gotten all the food out. |

| We did crate training when we were home, but if we were going to be gone fore more than two hours, we would put him in the kitchen with a pee pad, food and water, and a blanket and his crate. He only went on the pee pad. He was potty trained in about 2 weeks, but when I was home and he was out of his crate I watched his every move...it was a LOT of work. He is now fully potty trained, but only goes on his pee pad. I am fine with it because it is so easy for him and me. he can go whenever he wants. Even at night, he will jump down from the bed, go do his buisiness, and then come hop back into bed

| Update I just wanted to let everyone know that things are going MUCH better with the training since day 1! She's going into her crate more willingly and she still whimpers at first, but it's nothing like the screaming she was doing on day 1. Also, she hasn't eliminated in her crate again since I blocked off about 2 inches in the back. and NOT ONE accident in the house so far!! YAY! The only thing I don't like is that she doesn't really sleep through the night as well as she used to. I guess it will take time for her schedule to adjust again.

| For the first month or so Chip would ONLY be in the crate when we were at work or gone. He used to sleep with us until he started peeing on the bed. He would freak out if we were to put him in his crate. He'd get this crazed look on his face and franticly chew on his crate door. I had to drench it with bitter apple so he would stop. It was so hard to watch him go through it. Sometimes I actually think I saw real tears come from his eyes. It was so sad but we managed to keep him in there. We put both mine and my husbands worn t-shirts in there with an alarm clock underneath so he could hear the ticking and a warm bed. One morning when I was exhausted and he wouldn't stop jumping off the bed, I put him in his crate and he was fine... it was weird. He's 17 weeks now and some days he's just fine going in his crate. Last night he didn't even wimper at all. Sometimes he wimpers a little and barks if he knows we are leaving. After about five minutes or so he may start to howl a really funny sound, but I think he does that just to make noise. I always make sure he has a couple of his favorite toys in there to entertain him. Just be consistant with her and I'm sure you'll see a light at the end of the tunnel. Chip can actually hold his bladder through the night until about 8-9 A.M. and through out the day when hubby and I are at work. Good luck!
