Default Think Meds for Pancreatitis may cause it?

Is Flagyl ( Metronidazole ) not advised if your dog has Pancreatitis ?

My doctor prescribed it for my dog who had a black tarry stool and a CPL that was abnormal. No other symptoms. She said her's was a mild case of pancreatitis as she had no pain, no diarrhea or vomitting. She said the tarry stool indicated bleeding in upper GI tract so she prescribed fat free diet, Pepcid, Carafate Supension and Metronidazole Suspension .

Her blood tests were normal. Bella is a picky eater so we recently introduced very lean round steak into her diet ( cooked in George Foreman and patted dry) in addition to her Pet Fresh. I thought the diet change could have caused the tarry and softer stool. So two tarry soft stools and today she had half tarry and then half regular.

I don't want to give her meds she doesn't need or that will make her sick and GIVE her pancreatitis. I did some reading on the Metronidazole ( Flagyl) on sites that say it is implicted in Pancreatitis! I gave her the 12 hour dose. Now I'm freaking out. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Default ps.

she did have some fatty food in addition to her meals...husband is a bacon (yuck) eater and sharer. I believe he gave her some ice cream as well but won't admit to that...

I am concerned because while she is eating the small amount of lean beef and rice ( 94% Organic that I drained and washed with hot water) she hasn't had anything to drink that I've noticed. I am thinking of giving her a syringe of water before bed but don't really know what to do.Very scared.

Fresh Pet is too high in fat for a dog with pancreatatis. The fat content should not be above 5% and probably less. A precription diet is usually the answer with a 1% fat content. Chech the Fresh Pet fat content.

Default Help please ( and thanks to the lone reply!)

I thought I would get a bit more info on this subject. I searched and had a problem finding Pancreatitis and the drug in the search function.

Bella is doing much better today. I took a new stool sample in and while very very dark, they tested for blood and did not find any. Want to keep her on meds until stool returns to brown.

As far as the Pet Fresh, the doctor said after she is off the recovery diet to just give her the Pet Fresh with shredded boiled chicken and a little strained broth. I didn't read your post before and I wish I had. Why would the vet tell me Pet Fresh was ok?

Still on 1/4 c 3x a day of boiled ground beef and rice. My baby is starving, found a toy that had her Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice and starting eating! I took it away and felt bad. Checked the bag...12% crude fat She loves this kibble.

What can I feed her wet that is low fat and a dry free feed for when she rejects the wet ( which she always does). I like 100% USA sourced and produced. Anyone have any suggestions? Also treats. She will not eat veggies.

I feel awful for her. She's tiny, doesn' eat much to begin with and now can't even have the kibble she loves. Please help, anyone? Thanks for your reply Cherie!

I have never had a problem with Metronidazole causing any health issues. It is the drug of choice for intestinal bacterial conditions. I would be more inclined to worry about the food you are feeding her....and the treats your husband may also be giving her. That said, sometimes they get pancreatitis no matter what diet they are on.

I personally stick with pet food companies I trust: Hill's Science Diet and also Royal Canin. I also use the Purina RX foods. One of my foster pups was recently hospitalized with HGE and lymphangectasia. She is on Hill's ID low fat and is really liking it. I know what they say about Hill's, but I have many years of taking care of pups ..my own and my fosters...and I have not had food related issues....and have not worried about recalls. That last factor is worth it's weight in gold to me.

Hope you find something that works for her.

Default Thanks LadyJane

I don't know what they say about Hills-ha! My dog is the fussiest eater and I will speak to the vet tomorrow morning about the food and purchasing the three types.

Her CPL came back abnormal ( she had normal in May) . She wasn't vomitting, she wasn't in pain, she didn't have diarrhea, her blood work was fine, she was playing and eating and being her normal self. The vet said it was mild and in a few days she should be back to normal AND to give her her normal food- just petfresh with shreds of chicken.

Is this vet just out of touch?

I don't think your vet is out of touch. Sounds like the treatment was appropriate and no, you would not necessarily change the food for that. Are you sure it was a cPL? I am curious as to why he did it if the only symptom was diarrhea. Did he say why he would think it was pancreatitis?

For diarrhea / dark stools and no other symptoms and normal blood work, metronidazole would definitely be the drug of choice...and the carafate and pepcid make sense as well.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like you need to change the diet unless you just want to do so.

Default Bella

Bella didn't have diarrhea...only the dark, but soft, lightly formed stool twice. She had no other symptoms- no vomiting, no liquid stool, no pain. She was behaving perfecting normal. Also, they didn't test the first samples for blood- only the last one and it was negative- under microscope ( don't know why they were specific on that method)

They did the CPL test... in addition to all the other blood work which was fine. I didn't know any of this as my husband took the stool and dog in without my knowledge - likely because he was worried he gave her something and I am militant on not feeding her fat/food from the table.

I didn't know to ask if there were false positives with this test- if abnormal could come from just having a bit more fat in the diet and not actually Pancreatitis.I did ask if there was a level / number to the test as she said it was "mild" but she said no.

I'm confused.

LOL I am a militant, too. I totally get it. Let me tell you, though.....even being that way will not totally protect them from illness.

Anyway....as to the pancreatitis. It is confusing but honestly as long as they are doing well it is better to look at them and not just the test results. The most conclusive way to diagnose pancreatitis is to send out the cPLI and do ultrasound but those are usually done only when there are real symptoms. Some tests, while not perfect, are good to do just to get an idea.

There is a saying "treat the patient, not the tests" ...

Glad all is well.

LOL I totally get it. When my son was young, someone told me I need to have more children so I would not be so focused on him. I now have multiple pups and am just as bad as I was then. I think if it is in you, it is there to stay and honestly it is a good thing. Better to be safe than sorry...I never ignore symptoms on my pups. I have learned that if caught early most things respond much faster and better! I have pups with some really dreaded conditions who have been managed for years...I feel blessed.

Default didn't hear from doctor

I put in a call to the vet this morning...was told I would get a call later in the as the doc was on the late shift- did not.

I checked the paperwork and saw that it was the Snap CPL and it showed abnormal. Other blood work normal and she had no other symptoms but dark sticky stool. I checked back in May and the Snap was done and was normal. Maybe they just do it for the terrier breed for every GI type issue?

Since she had a two very small but normal colored bowel movements the last two days I wanted to know if I could take her off the meds. The Flagyl, Carafate and the Pepcid. From my understanding these were for diarrhea and she didn't and doesn't have that.

It's been 4 days and will be 5 since diagnosis and I need a bit more info-. I'm extremely anxious about the lack of followup of something that I've read is serious.

I also wanted to question the diet issue....how long do we keep her on the bland? 24 hours? 48, 72 hrs...25 years? No info on this was given at visit. She hasn't eaten any of the boiled chicken and rice today or the beef and rice.

If she had Pancreatitis should she go on her normal food - PetFresh and boiled chicken with Blue Buffalo Chicken and Rice Small Breed due to fat content?

I see her itching a lot, she has allergies, but I don't want to give her Benedryl while taking other meds. I've seen her licking air and now I'm wondering if she is nauseous as well.

I will try to get answers tomorrow. Newish vet and I'm not pleased.

Usually metronidazole is given for 5 - 7 days. I wouldn't take her off of it...it is not just an anti diarrheal....it is an antibiotic so it should be given for the correct amount of days. They might take her off since it is 5 days, but I would ask the vet first. The carafate and pepcid probably could be discontinued since she has no symptoms; but yes, would be good to speak with the vet.

If all of her labs were good, I would ask why a snap cPL was done especially since a positive test really didn't change the treatment (just my thoughts). It is always good to ask why about everything a vet does....and if they don't explain it well, make them! She is your baby and you are paying!

I don't think Benadryl would be contraindicated, but again, you should speak with the vet. Hopefully they will call you today. I have no time for vets who don't return calls....I am with you, would be highly annoyed.

My Bentley has had to go on flagyl/metronidazole for his IBD/IBS when it flares up. If any of you have taken a flagyl med...it leaves the most unbearable taste. Bentley is on Hill's Z/D prescription diet and I add the canned version from the vet. The canned food helps especially when he has to have the antibiotic. When he has is flare ups I give him Kaopectate also. Just wanted to let you know what has worked for me

Default Thanks Dyan !

I finally heard from the vet...Take her off the meds - she's having lovely poops, now.

Feed her food with less than 12% fat.

Pet Fresh has 6% crude fat Minimum so she says that's fine-- but I don't know ( and she had no idea what I was talking about) with that "formula" where you work the dry weight and protein % to come up with the actual Fat Content and it's always so much higher.

I have sample of Royal Cainin Gi and Hills GI wet/dry. I gave her a couple of kernels and she ate both.

I will go to the pet store to look for something very low in fat-- kibble and wet food - wise.
