Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Please, need opinions: what do you do for chronic headaches/migraines? I've had migraines since I was 5; well, and headaches too. I always get cluster headaches/migraines around every seasonal weather change too. Normally, the clusters last, oh, 2 weeks...and then start to ease up. But lately, I've had a cluster for about a month straight - and I just want to stab my head (those who have migraines probably know what I'm sayin' there ). Usually, aspirin manages my normal headaches fine (the only OTC product that has ever worked, tried it all). For migraines, the Fiorecet has mostly always worked....but not anymore, maybe? I've tried Imitrex, this/that, the other thing....pretty much all of it. But haven't tried anything new in about 3-4 years now. Does anyone else go thru this? What do you do to help? Any suggestions on migraine meds?

I haven't found anything that works either- Relpax, Imitrex, etc. The only thing that takes the edge off is Excedrin Migraine, a totally dark room, and an ice cold wash cloth on my temples and neck. Not always possible obviously. Relpax seems to be one of the new thing they are trying on most people- I have heard great things about it from some people- but it did nothing for me, or my mother.

| . Because I had encephalitis, I get frequent headaches but I just deal with them with the Aspirin as the Neurologist will not give me anything stronger as I am on other stuff. The Neurotin helps some. They are not fun at all, but it could always be worse. |

Many thanks for the info. I *think* I've tried Relpax, but I'm not completely sure...I will check my records.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Oh do I feel your pain. I have struggled with them for about 12 years. Sounds like we have the same type, I almost all the time have a low grade headache. I get migraines 2 or 3 times a month. Mine get so bad that I throw up all day long, I end up in the ER, etc. My head actually feels like it is going to blow up. It is awful. The only thing I took that got rid of them was Topamax. It works great. You take it daily to prevent them. I lost my insurance 2 years ago and could no longer afford it, its about 400.00 a month. I highly recommend it, but like all meds the warning label scares you to death. I would ask your doctor about it. You have to start taking it at night, because it makes you sleepy. You will slowly increase dosage etc. until you take it morning and night. I started out at 25mg and got up to 200mg per day. |

| I looked at the warnings on Topamax and was frightened by them. I take Zomig for migraines. I usually take half of a 5 mg tablet, and it helps me, but it doesn't completely take them away. The whole pill works better, but I can't stand all of the side effects. It definitely works a lot better if I take it when the migraine is beginning. Once it is out of control, nothing works. Fioricet helped years ago for me, but it gives me a headache now and I don't take it. Stress, lack of sleep, barometric pressure dropping, perfumes and chemicals all make them much worse for me. I am very careful about the cleaning products that I use. I was seeing a neurologist for a while several years ago. She was having me go for physical therapy for my neck and also someone at her office for biofeedback. I found the time of going to these appointments was causing me more stress. I wasn't going to listen much about them telling me to do less work-related things to get more rest, so I stopped going. The FDA has now approved the use of botox for migraines, but that sounds very scary also. I don't have clusters, but my migraines are very frequent and they can last several days a few times a month. I hope you start to feel much better. I know how debilitating they can be, and I'm very sorry you are feeling pain. I can't offer much medication advice, but cuddling with your precious babies might help a little bit. That always helped at least my feeling of well-being.

| Ugh, been there Ann! I also get headaches with the weather- low pressure systems. For a very long time I just had daily headaches and they were awful. I ended up going to a homeopathic doctor for my joint problems and she wanted to know everything that was wrong with me (ha!). Anyways, she never did fix my joint problems and I am still waiting for a diagnosis, however, my headaches are nearly gone. I still get the occasional headache, like many people do, however the daily pain is gone. She was also able to lower my anxiety which has been very very nice It is for SURE worth a try! Oh I forgot to mention, I cannot take migraine medicine as I have heart issues with heavy meds, so I had to try something else! |

| Headaches are really the worst... Almost 2 years ago I got a closed head injury from being thrown from a new horse while getting into the saddle and landing on concrete pavers. (Owww & we sold the horse). I had daily headaches for over 4 months to where I could only work 1/2 a day before I had to go home. The thing that really helped me out (when I finally went back to the doctor) was that he prescribed a daily medication called Amitriptyline. This is one of the first medications used for depression but there has been alot of research done into it's use for chronic pain. It was a miracle drug for me. I took it for about 3 months and then went off for several weeks, when the headaches returned I started it again. After taking for almost a year I am now off but I would recommend talking with your physician about this medication for headaches. It really works. Teresa |

| My husband and daughter get them also. They both take Midren and it seems to work well. Have you tried that yet? Hope you get better!

| My cousin and I get very bad headaches, not as often as we've gotten older. The best thing for me is Bayer Back and Body Pain Aspirin, or regular aspirin taken with coffee. Then I make a hot pack, lie down, blinds closed because the light hurts and try to sleep. Hope you find relief. |

| I have had a few migranes in my life~all since I have been married~ hmmmmm I was never able to find an OTC medication to help. This is so weird and I will sound like a real weirdo for even telling this, but I can't see you all rolling your eyes so here it goes. I had a cat once.(She died suddenly at 2 years old of aneurysm ) I had two in the time that I had her and when I would lie down, she sat propped up on my head and began "massaging" my head with her front paws. (You know where they open and close their paws while pushing) This with her rhythmic purring DID ease the intensity of the pain. I know it sounds totally silly, but she did it and these two times were the only time she did it on my head and she napped with me each night. I miss her she would have hated Maddie and Cooper. LOL So there you go Ann, find a highly intelligent cat to massage your head. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I too have the cluster headaches. I have had them off and on for about 25 years. Once one starts it can take at least two weeks as well. I liked Midrin for quite a few years, they took it off the market for a while. I changed to Fioricet and have had some success.I Switched to Midrin when it was on the market again and it didn't do a thing for me anymore. In my office I also asked for the natural lighting. Florescent really sets them off. It really has helped! I have heard of the Botox, a doctor came and explained it to me one day when I had to turn the lights off in my office. He did say that if botox helped there was a chance to get a surgery that is almost like a mini face lift. (a plastic surgeon as you may have guessed) The botox thing frightens me. I had some put in once for my worry lines, definately paralizes.... Wish I had the answer for you.
