So many helpful tips. I tried Topamax, but am thinking I should maybe try it again. I had tried amitryptiline in my early 20s, but got some heart palps (though I think it's such a good med for headache prevention). Maybe I should try Midrin again...I mean, just bc it didn't work years ago, maybe it will now. I don't think I've tried Zomig. I'm open to homeopathic too. I'm not against botox...but it does sort of scare me. I've heard for some people, it really works. I'm so sorry so many people suffer from this! Excuse the pun, but I feel your pain! It's so draining.

| Excedrin Migraine, lots of rest and the lights really low are helpful for me when I have migraines.

| Ann, do you think that your sinuses could have something to do with your headaches since they're seasonal? I wonder if you should try a steroid nasal spray or take Sudafed during the different times of year you seem to get the migraines. Didn't know if you had tried that angle... its seemed to help me. Also, I've found the Maxalt-MLT's work for me when Imitrex and others did not because they dissolve in your mouth and seem to work faster.

| Ann~ I know that you have tried Imitrex, but have you also tried it in the shot form? I had to start going to a specialist a few years ago for my migraines and this is what takes the edge off for me. I was getting migraines 3-4 times a week and they lasted 2 days each. I hate that you are going through this because this type of pain does alter your life. Mine started getting better when I did research on a natural way to help. I started taking Omega 3 with fish oil pills (I take a specific one and amount from GNC). I don't know why, but other brands don't work for me. It did take a couple of months before I noticed a difference, but it was like night and day for me. I went from living with chronic pain to having 2-4 migraines a month. I still struggle with them but it is so much better. When mine do get really bad, the Imitrex (shot) does help. I hope you can find something that works for you. Also, I can email you the links that Geoff has found. He researched different pressure points so when I feel one coming on, he uses these techniques on me ("acupressure"/"reflexology"). It has (one time) taken away the pain completely, but for the most part, these just truly relax me to the point of getting some relief from the pain. It doesn't go away but it does while he's doing this...which is a nice break. Also, have you had any MRIs preformed....just to be on the safe side?? This was the first thing that my doctor did just to rule out other reasons. Also, things that never really crossed my mind as being triggers, but have proven to be with me are needing a certain pillow, getting more sleep, tracking what I am eating/drinking. There are so many triggers. If you can start to pinpoint what yours are, this will also help....at least it has for me. |

TammyJM, I like the fish oil with borage. I suffer the occasional headache with atmospheric pressure changes, but I do feel much better when I take the supplement.

| Tammy is right about pinpointing the triggers. As I mentioned earlier, I have many triggers, most of them are common migraine triggers. Hormonal changes are also triggers. I had to go for MRIs also of my neck and brain to rule out any problems. That's where they saw a herniated disc in the neck but it's not a big deal. I took Imitrex but Zomig worked better. That was when I was taking the full prescribed pill, My friend takes Imitrex and has the same health coverage as I do. Imitrex is now a generic, but she said that the generic wasn’t working for her in the same way the brand was working, so she switched to Zomig. I wonder if they would cover the shots, since I would doubt they are generic yet.

| I was given Maxalt-MLT's and they helped me. It was just so expensive on our insurance that I had to stop taking it. I have fibromyalgia which may be causing some of my headaches. I now take ibruprofen and lay very still in a dark room that seems to help.

| I have suffered from chronic headaches for a long time and found that acupuncture helped.

My dad does this to help with his epilepsy (not the same I know, but it's a brain thing too... so pretty close? ) The omega 3's are suppose to strengthen his neurons. He takes high doses (~1200 mg+) a day and it seems to be working. He's not off his meds, but he takes half doses now and does well. All the heavy medication is taking a toll on his liver. Which is why he looked for an alternative. His goal is to stop taking meds all together. I don't think it's going to happen, but at least he feels better all around now that he is taking the omega 3's.

I do take a flax/fish/borage oil every day, without fail. I'm not sure it does anything noticeable, but I think Omegas are so good for us...so I'll be sure to keep taking it. I had MRIs on the head-scape about 1yr ago exactly and it was mostly normal. A couple things were weird w/ my sinuses, but the ENT said it wasn't all that clinically significant (my sinuses balked a bit at being called insignificant ). Julie - I actually really love acupuncture...but haven't done it for years. Good idea. J - Maxalt-MLTs is new to me - thank you! Will check it out.

I took the Imitrex shot a few times. The setup came in a kit with an injector thing that you placed against the top of your thigh and pushed a button to give yourself the shot. I only took a few of the shots though. The medicine increased the pain until I was beyond agony. It was worse than anything I've ever experienced in my life!! But, after a couple of hours it did begin to help somewhat. I don't know if it works like that with everyone, but I just wanted to give you a little warning that it can be BAD.

| The one and only time I had a migraine I had to go to an imediate care ctr and get a shot to get rid of it. I had it for days and couldnt get rid of it. I get headaches but none that severe or lasting. I am sorry you suffer with them

| Ann, I am so very sorry that you suffer so. I've only had a couple of migranes in my life, but WOWSIE! My hubby suffers from vision migranes and templar (sp) headaches. As far as OTC meds we found that a good ole arthritus formula BC powder (in the green box) worked better than anything. Ron went to a neurologist who prescribed a very mild blood pressure med and an even milder anti-depressent (I don't have the names of the drugs handy). Along with the meds, he avoids chocolate and limits caffeine. Have you tried using the pressure points at the base of the neck? It really helps. I hope that all who suffer from migranes can find their own personal magic to end this dreadful malady. |

YT Addict | My sister used to get really bad migraines all the time. She went to numerous doctors and specialists but couldn't get any relief. Eventually she cut aspartame out of her diet and the migraines almost went away completely. I also get migraines, but never as bad as my sister did. She recommended Aleve for migraines, I have yet to pick some up. I generally just take some Tylenol and try to sleep as much as possible.
