What are you proposing exactly?

Some of my ideas: We need to donate to Yorkie Rescues, write to judges hearing cases involving abusive puppymill owners, write congressmen to support bills that are trying to be passed in some of the states that have such lax pet sales laws. There are some states that do not even have a mimimum age to sell puppies! Most do not have near enough penalties for breaking the laws that are in place. We can try to educate everyone we know or even hear of wanting to buy dogs or cats from a pet shop or puppymill type breeder. These are some of the very small ways I have tried to make a difference this year. Not sure who you are referring to as wanting to "stay within their do nothing but whinge(sic) comfort zone," but there are a LOT of people here that have done these same things and more. There are some very active Rescue folks on YT, that donate resources of time and money beyond what we can imagine. So, I don't think this is a readership that should be accused of doing nothing.

What else are you thinking of? What "radical" action have you taken so far? I am all for efforts that do not involve putting money in the pockets of the people who ARE the problem. It is easy to say these things on the pet forums. We are a supportive audience. But I don't think most people who use their free time to learn and share about their dogs are the ones who are the problem. We need to do things that reach outside of "this comfort zone." So, what is your plan? I could use some new ideas to help the effort too!

What you're doing is great. Would you not agree it's not enough though as things aren't really changing?

I did not state I've done anything radical. Please, we are on the same side and I never said that the folks here are the problem or a problem in any way.

I believe that we need to take a step &/or steps that other groups who facilitated concrete changes have done.

Look what they have done for Gay rights in just the last few years. What have they done to manage the changes? It has taken years of hard work, marches and finding people in power who support them and will work with them.

The Million Man walk on Washington. What were they striving for and what has it accomplished?

I look back at real change in policies throughout our government's history and see that it has taken hard work. *Racial equality? Women's rights?*
It takes more than what can be done from our homes and computers.

I am not saying those things don't count. I'm saying they don't seem to be enough to facilitate real changes.

I am not saying it will be easy. I am looking for and to people who are willing to try and fail rather than not try at all.

Again, we are on the same side here and I am not saying I have all the answers.

Open minded and honest communication would certainly be a start.

I am sure there are others who have some ideas. NO ideas are wrong and certainly a safe place to explore those ideas and see if some can stick or inspire bigger ideas can not hurt the cause.

I need to get some things done and will be back later.

Don't want folks thinking I'm bailing on this conversation, just busy away from the computer is all.

I agree. Nothing worthwhile is going to be easy. I don't think anyone believes we can send a few emails, letters or phone calls and boom, everything will change for the better but there must be a starting point. Why not here and now. The longer we just say "something needs to be done" and then go fix lunch, the longer it will be before a change does take place. Once a movement is started, ppl will join in. We need to be positive and supportive to those who want to instill a change.

Okay, I just called her and this is the info I got:

- She currently has 4 dogs

- She just sold a different Yorkie yesterday, but she still has the 2 pregnant females for sale.

- She is willing to drop the price to $1100 for the 3lb girl (due Aug. 11th), the other one is 5lbs and also pregnant (due July 30th) she is selling for $700, which is negotiable. They are both 3 years old. Neither are registered. She has no medical records for the 5lb girl.

- Both girls were impregnated by the same sire, and he also mated with her mom's 2 dogs (who are also pregnant ).

- She has had the smaller girl for a month and a half, and the bigger girl for 5 months.

- The sire is 3.5lbs.

- The smaller girl has bad teeth (according to the letter from the vet). She said the letter also says WNO (I forgot to ask what that meant...I'm assuming it means "will not operate"??)

- She currently feeds them Purina dog chow (YUCK), and changes their food often based on what's on sale (poor little tummies).

- There were children screaming in the background...sounded very chaotic at 10:00am.

- She says she is moving and needs the money for furniture as she won't have anything, and can't wait for the puppies as it will be too far in the future.

- Of her 4 remaining dogs, 3 are currently pregnant.

It always amazes me how a person can create such chaos in their lives all by themselves! Then how it pours over onto everything they touch such as the poor animals and kids. Why is it she wants more for the little one when it's the one that will most likely need quite a bit of medical care? That male dog has been a busy little thing. I wouldn't think that's a healthy thing for him either (just an uneducated guess)! The whole thing just makes me feel ill.

She may see puppies before she sells. Her prices are outrageous.
This is a very sick woman who has no care for her dogs, they are just like property to her. 1100 is ridiculous STILL! Now she needs dental? She will not find her a proper home and probably not the others. From the pictures her home doesn't look very well either. I am not sure how far I am exactly from her, but I am over in Canada, it would be a long trip for me to just "go and see". If someone is closer they could go and check it out, if it's in bad condition call the authorities in, even children's services!

I hope some of you, if you haven't already joined, will join YAP, (Yorkies against puppy mills). We try to inform members of legislation being passed and urge them to get involved. We also inform them of threads here at Yorkietalk and urge them to voice opinions and ideas on solutions. I don't know if this particular breeder is a miller, but selling a pregnant bitch when you don't want to pay the cost of surgery is definitely the sign of an abusive breeder. I personally wish more people would discourage people from actively seeking out tinies, because I think it encourages breeders to breed for them, and this is the sort of thing that happens. One of the things we also do is encourage people not to become enablers, don't "rescue" puppies from abusive breeders, if you want to rescue a dog, go to a legitimate rescue and give a dog a home. Only when these people can't sell their dogs, will the stop breeding.

I believe you should report this to local authorities. Some of you have talked to this women, and you can report her to the proper authorities; if enough people report her, they will check out the situation. "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" as they say. As far as reports that animal authorities will euthanize her, we have people who could work with the shelter and see that that doesn't happen. The mood in this country is changing regarding animal abuse, and government officials seem more willing to listen, now that they may show up on the national news in a bad light. To join YAP, see the link in my signature.

Not to sound ignorant, but who do I contact to report her? I've already spoken with her and based on what I was told, I think I have enough reason to suspect abuse/cruelty. Just lead me in the right direction and I'll make that call!!

It would be Macomb County Animal Control...
They investigate animal cruelty situations.

Open minded and honest communication would certainly be a start.

I am sure there are others who have some ideas. NO ideas are wrong and certainly a safe place to explore those ideas and see if some can stick or inspire bigger ideas can not hurt the cause.

Maybe what little I have done is not enough, but they are a start! If every single person can say they have done at least this much, then they can say it is not enough. Think of it this way, what if every single person did the same thing? What if even every YT member would mail in donations today to a couple of the good Rescue organizations associated with other YT members? How could that expand their rescue efforts? How many more dogs could be saved, get the medical attention they need, and ultimately find their way to a great home? How many members do we have? Multiply that by even $10 or $20!!!! Wow that could make soem change!

What if every person here had written to that judge that heard the puppymill case recently? Maybe the owner would have gotten a stiffer penalty that would truly act as a deterrant! Instead, she will probably do the same thing again.

What if every single person wrote to the congressmen in each of the states that are basically without pet sales protection laws? Maybe we could get the "Chloe Bill" passed in Illinois for one. This is a "sweeping change" bill that could really make a difference! It would limit breeders to 20 unspayed/unaltered dogs and put a lot more control on the sale of dogs, pet shops and add much needed penalties! It would put stricter guidelines on pet stores providing health histories, require licensing, ban those with felony dog abuse charges from breeding dogs, and require sanitization and safety procedures for kennels (among other things!)

These ideas are not enough, but they would be a great start if more would participate. You say we have to start somewhere, I am saying this is a start. But how many are doing even this much? There are organizations and efforts underway NOW that we can support. We don't necessarily need to reinvent the wheel but we do need to PARTICIPATE!

Actually, I already said I can use some MORE ideas to help the effort and wanted to know exactly what action you are talking about. Try what? Do what? What steps? I just want to know what have you done for the cause and if it sounds workable, I will help that way too. See what I mean? You say folks may call you radical, but I am asking why? What radical ideas do you have or actions have you taken that would make folks call you that? It is fine to say no one else is doing anything and something needs to be done. But that is not a solution. Tell me what your ideas to make a change are. Better, tell me what actions you have taken. I am always ready to listen to something that might help stop animal abuse. If it is fesible, I will jump in and roll up my sleeves for a worthwhile effort.

I am not afraid to leave my house, just tell me what you are doing outside of the home that has helped. I offered some ideas, you say they are not enough, so just tell me what you are doing that is getting better results. If I could go in person to every puppymiller and transfer some compassion to them I would, but that is also a pipe dream. So, concrete ideas! I think you have the "fire" and people would like to respond if there were specific ideas and projects. I tried to list some simple projects that everyone can do TODAY to truly help. The only reason they have not make a big change yet is there is not BIG support!

Before we start saying everything is hosed up and no one is doing anything, we need to ask ourselves what have WE done to help. If the answer is nothing, maybe we need to re-examine how we word our outrage. JMHO.

Sigh...

I contacted the local animal control center, and I spoke with a really sweet lady. Unfortunately, she said that because these dogs are considered "property", there is nothing that can be done to stop this mass breeding. As far as medical attention, they can't do anything unless the dogs are in a near-death situation. The only thing that she could get busted for is if someone were to visit and noticed neglect...such as deplorable living conditions, feces all over, etc. But as long as there's food & water available, there's pretty much nothing that can be done.

Another thing that may be good to look into is is she has a kennel and if it meets the county's requirements. If she says she only has four dogs, I doubt that that is the case though.

Here's a link to the Humane Society Michigan, It has some good tips.
http://www.michiganhumane.org/site/P...gename=cruelty

I think it's important to also tell them that she's selling lots of different breeds. I can't remember which of our members noticed that. Perhaps it's time for a home visit, but you can also call, your local congressman and tell them you don't believe that local laws are doing enough to protect dogs.

Thanks Nancy! That is a concrete idea that people can do immediately to get involved. I joined and added my pet project for others to help.

(BTW I apologize for all the typos in my previous post. I must have gotten a little quick with the submit button and I am out of time to edit now. )
