Your Barley is absolutely a doll and I love his name, too! I foster thru YTNR (yorkierescue.com) and I've been very pleased with the attention & care our little ones receive before being placed into a new home. I also love your thoughts on your promise to love, cherish & protect him forever!

Yayy...you did great! What a sweet, heartwarming story and he's such a cutie pie (isn't it amazing what a little love can do?)...and his name I absolutely LOVE! Sooooo cute! I just wanted to say thank you to mm for starting this thread too! I adore my little Max, who we bought from the breeder, but there's just something really "special" about a rescue. It's just a good feeling that there's one less little creature out there suffering needlessly! It also makes me feel good that there's so many people willing to do it too....I wouldn't trade my Max for the world, but I know that from now on, I will only have rescued animals of any kind!

| I got Ivy from a rescue last July she was a puppy mill dog. I think she is about 6 years old or so ( a guess from my vet and my groomer ) I can tell from her belly that she must have had a few babies her teeth were in bad shape, she lost 10 so far, and she is now just learning how to play a little. She still is coming around but doing so much better. Max is a rehome I got him when he was 7 months old. He is just one happy little guy and he has helped Ivy come around.

| I don't think that I have posted here so I thought that I would tell you about my adoptions. I started last July as a foster mom for OK Yorkie Rescue. I signed up for special needs. I got the call for my first foster, Harley. Harley had been in 3 or 4 homes before coming to me. He was a surrender to our rescue because he was the dog from Hell supposedly. His owner said he threw up all the time, had seizures. She had taken him to the vet for blood work but her vet wanted to do an ultrasound because he thought he had Liver Shunt. She didn't want to spend the money on him so she surrendered to our rescue. So, my first foster came to me. I got him on Wednesday evening. He was very lethargic and seemed depressed. He had a seizure that evening and scared me to death. I doubted myself as if I was ready for this. On Saturday morning I woke up to diarhea all over my house. Harley wouldn't eat anything. I tried baking him some chicken and he would only eat a few bites and only out of my hands. Then next day he wouldn't eat the chicken so I tried scrambled egg. To make a long story short I took him to the Rescue vet for our blood tests but would take the results from the test to my vet. That way I had 2 opinions. Neither of them thought he had Liver Shunt just a seizure dog. So we began the meds. Seizures every day and sometimes twice a day went to maybe one a month. And knock on wood....He hasn't had one in about a month now. He began to gain weight and became very active. When Harley got well and was available for adoption I just couldn't let him go. He had to stay with me! The thought of him going to a 5th home and maybe they wouldn't like him either broke my heart. He is such a toot but only because I have spoiled him rotten. Then I decided that I wanted a female. You see, I have a 14 year old female poodle that I know won't be with me long. I wanted a smaller one so that Harley could have a playmate. Our rescue doesn't get the smaller ones very often so I began to look at other rescues but didn't feel right about doing that. So, I decided to wait. While doing a home inspection and placement of one of my fosters I got a call from the rescue girls. They were doing a pickup for a stray female. In a bit they called me and told me they thought they had "My girl!" But she had a tweak....her head was crooked but she was a very sweet and shy girl. I couldn't wait to see her. When I picked her up I knew she was mine if she made it. She had sores all over her body and her head was very tilted. I got her into the vet and she had staph infection, infected and filthy ears, infected teeth. She just laid around and would hide most of the time. The rescue had her spayed and teeth cleaned and pulled and her ears cleaned. After 3 rounds of antibiotics...OH WOW....She was a new girl! While she was under they discovered that her jaw had been broken in 2 places. Probably why her head is tilted, from a very serious injury that was probably never treated. She now thinks she is just as big as all the other dogs and lets every foster know that I'm hers! Another foster that I just couldn't let go so now Pixie is at her forever home with her brother Harley! The 1st picture is Harley when I first got him, the second is Harley almost a year later. I will have to post a picture of Pixie later, I'm at work and don't have one on my work computer. |

| 4 Rescues and Considering Another We have had cats forever and now have 3 girls--a mama (Coco) and her 2 daughters (Ginger and Jasmine). All of them are from our county animal welfare league. We adore them. When our 17.5 years old cat had her 2nd stroke and had to be put out of her pain, it took 3 cats to replace her. We decided we wanted a small dog (no room for a big dog with 3 11-12 lb cats) and picked a Yorkie because we have some allergies (yes, even to our cats, that is why they make prescription allergy meds. We ended up adopting a 4.7 year old girl Yorkie, Zoee. She is a delight and goes every where with me. She has some medical needs. She is diabetic and gets insulin shots after each meal. She also has food and pollen allergies. She takes a good bit of care daily. We are thinking of adopting a second diabetic dog who has some vision issues. I can't stand the thought of an almost 10 year old Yorkie being given up. Of course with an illness for which there is no cure, I am sure that this little man will be much less likely to be adopted. Am I crazy to adopt a second Yorkie with medical needs? I have been a Type 1 diabetic (I make no insulin.) for 20 years and can take care of myself, and 2 dogs needs, but the vet bills are quite high. In 3 months our little girl has needed $2400 in vet care and she has not had any emergencies or injuries: check-up, dental cleaning/extraction, allergies, allergies, paracites, urinary tract infection. Does anyone have experience welcoming an older Yorkie (almost 10) into a home with 3 cats and 1 younger Yorkie (5)? I would greatly appreciate advice on the best way to do this. My plan is for all of the cats and dogs to get along and it has taken 3.5 months for our 1 Yorkie, Zoee, to jump up on the sofa and sit next to a cat. How do I manage 2 Yorkies and 3 cats? |
