Rocky was my first rescue and he was an owner surrender. His owner was a long distance truck driver who traveled cross country with his 3 other Yorkies & 1 Maltese . Poor Rocky had a history of Bladder Stones (Calcium Oxalate) Surgery and traveling long distances with infrequent potty stops became a recipe for disaster when he had a recurrence. Almost at the same time, the economy took a nose dive along with unemployment which Rocky's owner became a victim of, too. Rather than put his beloved Rocky down...he reached out to YTNR (yorkierescue.com) and the rest is history. Rocky got his life-saving surgery, was spayed & recuperated in the company of my 3 lil' Yorkie-gals. After about two months of screening prospective families, Rocky decided on a sweet gal who already had another Yorkie-boy to be his brother.

Sammie came next as an owner abandonment at the Vet hospital where he was being treated for a Pitbull attack. Poor Sammie was only a 7 mth old puppy when he suffered this attack that left him with a fractured scapula and multiple puncture wounds that required drains. When his owners could no longer afford his rising Vet bills, they failed to pay for his care and never came back for him! Amazingly enough though, Sammie pulled through like a little champ and ultimately found his furever Momma who dotes on him now like he were her little prince!

It thrills me to no end to just know how a set of tragic circumstances that left these two little Yorkie-boys in need could end so beautifully!

Pictured below is Rocky on the left and Sammie is pictured on the right:
Isn't being a foster mom the very best feeling ever. I thought when I brought home my first rescue pup that my heart couldn't feel any more full of love. But being a foster mom makes it even one better. To not only be able to save a life but then watch that life blossom and finally setting him free to live in a new and wonderful home.
Thank you for being a foster mom

The last is all my fur babies and so you can see he does love my other pups, just doesn't like strange / new dogs. Thanks for listening / reading

I still can't believe I did the attachment right. Yeah!!!
Congratulations on your attachments!

Your Barley is absolutely a doll and I love his name, too! I foster thru YTNR (yorkierescue.com) and I've been very pleased with the attention & care our little ones receive before being placed into a new home.

I also love your thoughts on your promise to love, cherish & protect him forever!

Thank you for being a foster mom
You know...I had been searching for some kind of "service" to do as my little part in giving back or paying it forward and not in a million years would I ever have dreamed that I'd end up as a Rescue Foster Mom but, just like the movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons (his Mom, Queenie used to say), "Ya never know what's comin' for ya." and that's the truth!

PS...I too, thoroughly love all of these rescue stories especially, the before & after pic's of these babies!

My Barley was a rescue, and I will always choose to rescue. It's amazing how much love a rescued dog gives you, especially one that's a little older.

I found Barley on Petfinder and though he looked horrible in his picture, I knew he was the one. He was also one that didn't know how to play with a toy when we first brought him home. Now, just 4 months later he loves playing fetch and shake the tar out of it

I'm hoping the photos will attached, but I'm terrible slow at learning how to upload them on threads. SO if they don't...Barley's my avatar and there are photos in my albums if anyone likes to take a look. Thanks for reading and starting this wonderful thread!

Yayy...you did great! What a sweet, heartwarming story and he's such a cutie pie (isn't it amazing what a little love can do?)...and his name I absolutely LOVE! Sooooo cute!

I just wanted to say thank you to mm for starting this thread too! I adore my little Max, who we bought from the breeder, but there's just something really "special" about a rescue. It's just a good feeling that there's one less little creature out there suffering needlessly!
It also makes me feel good that there's so many people willing to do it too....I wouldn't trade my Max for the world, but I know that from now on, I will only have rescued animals of any kind!

Thank you both!!! Now that I've got the upload thing figured out I'll have to share more photos. I'm hoping to see more rescue stories!

I remember your heartbreak when your 2 little ones had that horrible accident. I cried with you it was just so heart wrenching to feel your lose. OMG! You had a TTbaby. That is the funniest thing I've heard all day. It's wonderful how you are willing to give back even while you breed. I wish more breeders felt that way as well. Thank you for sharing your story.

I got Ivy from a rescue last July she was a puppy mill dog. I think she is about 6 years old or so ( a guess from my vet and my groomer ) I can tell from her belly that she must have had a few babies her teeth were in bad shape, she lost 10 so far, and she is now just learning how to play a little. She still is coming around but doing so much better.

Max is a rehome I got him when he was 7 months old. He is just one happy little guy and he has helped Ivy come around.

I don't think that I have posted here so I thought that I would tell you about my adoptions. I started last July as a foster mom for OK Yorkie Rescue. I signed up for special needs. I got the call for my first foster, Harley. Harley had been in 3 or 4 homes before coming to me. He was a surrender to our rescue because he was the dog from Hell supposedly. His owner said he threw up all the time, had seizures. She had taken him to the vet for blood work but her vet wanted to do an ultrasound because he thought he had Liver Shunt. She didn't want to spend the money on him so she surrendered to our rescue. So, my first foster came to me. I got him on Wednesday evening. He was very lethargic and seemed depressed. He had a seizure that evening and scared me to death. I doubted myself as if I was ready for this. On Saturday morning I woke up to diarhea all over my house. Harley wouldn't eat anything. I tried baking him some chicken and he would only eat a few bites and only out of my hands. Then next day he wouldn't eat the chicken so I tried scrambled egg. To make a long story short I took him to the Rescue vet for our blood tests but would take the results from the test to my vet. That way I had 2 opinions. Neither of them thought he had Liver Shunt just a seizure dog. So we began the meds. Seizures every day and sometimes twice a day went to maybe one a month. And knock on wood....He hasn't had one in about a month now. He began to gain weight and became very active. When Harley got well and was available for adoption I just couldn't let him go. He had to stay with me! The thought of him going to a 5th home and maybe they wouldn't like him either broke my heart. He is such a toot but only because I have spoiled him rotten.

Then I decided that I wanted a female. You see, I have a 14 year old female poodle that I know won't be with me long. I wanted a smaller one so that Harley could have a playmate. Our rescue doesn't get the smaller ones very often so I began to look at other rescues but didn't feel right about doing that. So, I decided to wait. While doing a home inspection and placement of one of my fosters I got a call from the rescue girls. They were doing a pickup for a stray female. In a bit they called me and told me they thought they had "My girl!" But she had a tweak....her head was crooked but she was a very sweet and shy girl. I couldn't wait to see her. When I picked her up I knew she was mine if she made it. She had sores all over her body and her head was very tilted. I got her into the vet and she had staph infection, infected and filthy ears, infected teeth. She just laid around and would hide most of the time. The rescue had her spayed and teeth cleaned and pulled and her ears cleaned. After 3 rounds of antibiotics...OH WOW....She was a new girl! While she was under they discovered that her jaw had been broken in 2 places. Probably why her head is tilted, from a very serious injury that was probably never treated. She now thinks she is just as big as all the other dogs and lets every foster know that I'm hers! Another foster that I just couldn't let go so now Pixie is at her forever home with her brother Harley!

The 1st picture is Harley when I first got him, the second is Harley almost a year later. I will have to post a picture of Pixie later, I'm at work and don't have one on my work computer.

Default 4 Rescues and Considering Another

We have had cats forever and now have 3 girls--a mama (Coco) and her 2 daughters (Ginger and Jasmine). All of them are from our county animal welfare league. We adore them. When our 17.5 years old cat had her 2nd stroke and had to be put out of her pain, it took 3 cats to replace her. We decided we wanted a small dog (no room for a big dog with 3 11-12 lb cats) and picked a Yorkie because we have some allergies (yes, even to our cats, that is why they make prescription allergy meds. We ended up adopting a 4.7 year old girl Yorkie, Zoee. She is a delight and goes every where with me. She has some medical needs. She is diabetic and gets insulin shots after each meal. She also has food and pollen allergies. She takes a good bit of care daily. We are thinking of adopting a second diabetic dog who has some vision issues. I can't stand the thought of an almost 10 year old Yorkie being given up. Of course with an illness for which there is no cure, I am sure that this little man will be much less likely to be adopted. Am I crazy to adopt a second Yorkie with medical needs? I have been a Type 1 diabetic (I make no insulin.) for 20 years and can take care of myself, and 2 dogs needs, but the vet bills are quite high. In 3 months our little girl has needed $2400 in vet care and she has not had any emergencies or injuries: check-up, dental cleaning/extraction, allergies, allergies, paracites, urinary tract infection. Does anyone have experience welcoming an older Yorkie (almost 10) into a home with 3 cats and 1 younger Yorkie (5)? I would greatly appreciate advice on the best way to do this. My plan is for all of the cats and dogs to get along and it has taken 3.5 months for our 1 Yorkie, Zoee, to jump up on the sofa and sit next to a cat. How do I manage 2 Yorkies and 3 cats?
