We decided we wanted a small dog (no room for a big dog with 3 11-12 lb cats) and picked a Yorkie because we have some allergies (yes, even to our cats, that is why they make prescription allergy meds. We ended up adopting a 4.7 year old girl Yorkie, Zoee. She is a delight and goes every where with me. She has some medical needs. She is diabetic and gets insulin shots after each meal. She also has food and pollen allergies. She takes a good bit of care daily. We are thinking of adopting a second diabetic dog who has some vision issues. I can't stand the thought of an almost 10 year old Yorkie being given up. Of course with an illness for which there is no cure, I am sure that this little man will be much less likely to be adopted. Am I crazy to adopt a second Yorkie with medical needs? I have been a Type 1 diabetic (I make no insulin.) for 20 years and can take care of myself, and 2 dogs needs, but the vet bills are quite high. In 3 months our little girl has needed $2400 in vet care and she has not had any emergencies or injuries: check-up, dental cleaning/extraction, allergies, allergies, paracites, urinary tract infection. Does anyone have experience welcoming an older Yorkie (almost 10) into a home with 3 cats and 1 younger Yorkie (5)? I would greatly appreciate advice on the best way to do this. My plan is for all of the cats and dogs to get along and it has taken 3.5 months for our 1 Yorkie, Zoee, to jump up on the sofa and sit next to a cat. How do I manage 2 Yorkies and 3 cats? |
