He still gets startled rather easily though, esp considering the breed is known for being tough. He may have some digestive problems we are still getting checked out, but other than that he is a true joy. If i had a house instead of an apt i would def consider fostering animals..i dont know how i'd give them up at the end, lol, but i would love to do something like that to help these poor babies. I agree that anyone who has the opportunity should definitely consider fostering and helping out a sheltered animal.
UPDATE: Timmy still has digestive issues, but they seem to have been solved by feeding him very slowly. I am currently trying to train him to eat slower and chew his food. With doing this, and switching to Royal Canin, he has gained the weight he lost, and more he is now a 5.5 lb healthy boy and he has a TON more energy and is finally starting to pick on my pom the way she picks on him. lol I LOVE the new energy and happiness he has, and he is a TRUE JOY to be around.. he seems to be getting more comfortable around ppl as well

I have Abigale who was a rescue from a kill shelter. I fostered her and we kept her because no one else wanted her. She is blind in one eye and has a cateract on the other. She is between 12-14 yrs old. I also have Elsy that we got because the owner had to work alot. She is almost 2 yrs old. Last week I was given an 8 week old maltese that is blind. She doesn't have an eyeball on one side and the other is so underdeveloped that she has no sight in it. She is a precious ball of fur. Abigale's and Elsy pics is my avatar and also in my album. I've got to add Sally to them.

Smile Bailey

Hi - My first post on a very informative "Yorkie" site - thanks to all for the great information here.
We got Bailey in September of last year from a rescue (our first rescue adoption, and it is so gratifying). Bailey is a little girl (5.5 lbs at adoption and now just a bit over 6) approx. 5 years old. She came from a breeder (so I'm guessing puppy mill). It has been so much of a pleasure seeing her change and adapt to her new home. She is doing extremely well and becoming a very loving, trusting and enjoyable little doggie. My only problem thus far - she will run off at the smallest possible opportunity and is quite a project to recover. It has happened 3 times now, totally by mistake. We are definitely learning from our mistakes. She does not run and hide, just runs and runs until something gets her attention - then we catch up.
My question here is: does anyone have any ideas on how to change that behavior? My inclination is to bring her somewhere that is fenced in, let her go and attempt to get her to come back on her own.

aaahhhh, Bailey looks adorable! How often do you walk her or take her out? Sometimes dogs do this because they are very curious about the outside world and they don't ge tto explore it often enough. Also because they have so much energy they need to burn, they take every opportunity to do that. Make sure you walk her more often. Just remember, letting her run around the backyard cannot replace a walk in the outside world. Just not the same.

Hope this helps.

This is kinda on a tangent, but this was on the paper recently. How crazy is that???? Well, I'm glad this little dog is in good hands now.

We do not let her out without one of us and her on leash.
We walk twice-a-day - 1/2 mile in the AM and at least 2 miles in the evening.
Thanks for the idea, She seems very content in the house and on leash. It's like she just loves it when she is "free". Can't really blame her; and I can deal with it. Just looking for some ideas.

If you can find a field, or somewhere safe that is fenced in, i think your idea is a good one. Molly is a rescue yorkie and that method worked well for us.
Always have a bag of her favourite treats in your pocket. I take some kibble in a little pot,so when i shake it, it rattles. Molly has got used to it now and knows that when she hears that rattle, its treat time!
At first i used one of those extending leads, and tried the recall with that at its longest (just in case!!)
There are times when it doesnt work, when there are just too many distractions, so i am always very careful where i let her off her lead.
Good Luck.

Yorkies aren't the best at coming when called rescue or not. lol
We adopted our little girl from a no kill rescue almost 2 yrs ago and she only runs if we try to leave. I once left her on a park bench next to hubby while I walked to away, she waited a min then jumped down and ran after me. Lucky she was leashed to her carry bag which she was dragging behind her so she was easier to catch. She was only running to find me anyway. We left her at a family members home to be watched while we went to a wedding about a week or 2 after we got her. She bolted out their door and it took 5 people to catch her. Thank God she didn't get run over or stolen by the people who did catch her. They are wicked fast runners these little Yorkies. Before this dog we had a Lhasa Poo we got as a tiny baby, she too was FAST and liked to make a game of us chasing her. I finally put a short leash on her all the time. She would even run from us in the house and it would take awhile to catch her which was a problem if we were late for work or something. So the leash helped alot, if we could get within 4ft of her and grab the leash we could catch her. After awhile it wasn't fun for her anymore and she quit. Then we'd just call her or bait her with a treat and all was well.

PS. Also as much as she loves walking on the leash she loves being free to run like crazy and explore in the fenced back yard. She LOVES her back yard and the freedom she has back there.

you could try training her to sit, stay, and come for long periods of time. and practice it outside a lot after she learns. a book i read says to teach them while they are on a leash. that way if she does get excited and dashes off, if she is well trained you can get her back easily with those commands. Yorkies will always dash though if they see something interesting, ESP a rodent or bunny or anything fun to chase...so keep that in mind

Yes my little sweetie Vinny was rehomed and rescued. I got Vinny when he was eleven years old. The person who I got him from said that he had been rehomed many times. Poor Vinny is terrified when he has an accident in the house. He cowers in corners, and his tail is pulled tightly to his legs. That just proves that Vinny was once treated horribly. I think it is such a good idea to adopt a dog that despratly needs a good home. I know Vinny did, and I hope more people adopt rescue dogs.

Loving owner of Vinny

We found Fizz running loose on a busy street. Spent the next few weeks looking for an owner...He had no collar and no chip. ( I had him checked for a chip by Our Animal resource Center, Our Humane Society, My Vet, And SICSA...just to be safe Had the Vet check him out and put him on antibiotics. $200.00 and the dog was not mine. Spent the next weeks looking at every lost dog thing there was on line, in pet stores, in the Vet clinincs...My vet even put out calls to the vet clinics in the area for me I really like my vet. Many calls later to the Animal resourse center and other rescue palces. No one even came forward. Called our county shelter and they have a three day turn around for dogs without tags and microchip, then the dog is up for adoption. ....we waited three weeks...Finally decided it was time he knew he had a long term loving family whose other dog really likes him. So now I just want to treat him right in every way, he is now tagged and microchipped and loved a ton.[/COLOR] Of course he may not be so happy after we neuter him...lol. But he is so...so...so...cute and we love him a ton.
