I have a re-home. Lily is my 4 1/2 year old Yorkie-Poodle mix (also have a couple others of different breeds that were re-homes). I've had Lily for about a year and a half. She was brought into the vet clinic I work at to be euthanized because she needed ACL surgery and her owners didn't want to spend the money (but then went and bought another puppy afterwards that died of parvo). The owner asked them to sign Lily over to us instead of euthanizing her and she did the surgery. She was originally going to be sent to a rescue after she was healed but she's absolutely terrified of men so it would've made finding her a home difficult. She lived at the clinic for almost a year before I finally gave in (I already had 7 other dogs) and brought her home. I'm pretty sure she has been abused. Along with being afraid of men, you can't make any sudden moves around her, especially if you have anything in your hand, or she cries and runs away. She HATES the remote control to the TV. I've finally after all this time got her to, once in a while, take food from my hand. She has her issues, but she's a sweet girl and I love her to death.

The first weekend on a Sunday we were just about finished when my friend saw this little dog sitting by the front door and shivering (it was about 105 out) We opened the door and scooped him up. We checked with Mall Security, then called the dog pound and on and on it went. My friend decided that while we continued looking for his owner she'd bring him home. On the way home we stopped at Safeway and picked up dog food a leash and a collar because he had none of this. She brought him to Petco to see if he was microchipped he was not. We put an ad in the paper. Contacted Yorkie Rescue and put up flyers near the mall. A couple of weeks went by people answered the ad but it wasn't their dog. It was so sad because they were so hopeful. My husband and daughter were allergic to dogs so the dog stayed with my friend until the fateful weekend she went away and my daughter and I were feeding and walking this little Yorkie. For my daughter it was love at first sight. She wasn't allergic (or just mildly) to him and she asked if we could bring him home for a few hours so we could play with him longer. Well that was the start of it. And in the end my husband was only mildly allergic to him. We continued looking for his owner but to no avail. My daughter who had a birthday coming up decided he could be her present and she named him Louis V. Because he was small enough to fit in a purse. I waited another 3 months to get him neutered wondering why someone would give up this little guy. He had to be lost but sadly no one was looking for him
He at first had some issues, didn't really like men, or small kids (almost found that out the hard way) my kids were teens so that wasn't an issue for us. He did not like anyone wearing work boots. Didn't like being left alone and was a bit of an escape artist as he'd chase anything that ran with total disregard for how far he'd run. He was smart and funny. Always entertaining and I fell in love with this breed. I taught him to whisper woofies instead of speak (I've talked all my dogs that…it's adorable) I just lost him a week ago and we had a great life together. When I married my husband I thought I'd never have a dog because of his allergies. In the end he took his claritan when needed and after spending 10 years + with this little guy --his first dog ever, he understands how they are really a part of the family. The luckiest trip to the mall I've ever had. Below is Lou with my daughter Kate a couple of summers ago.

I could see that he looked like a nicely bred Yorkie and when I inquired I was told he came from a breeder who does things right and he was apparently healthy. I adopted him the day before his 1st birthday. He made himself right at home but tended to keep to himself for security for a couple of weeks. He wasn't sure of his place. Daisy was the first one to play with him and they started playing with soft toys together and tug of war games. Teddy was next to accept him and I would find him putting his head down on him and cuddling. Barney wanted nothing to do with him and a few fights broke out that I managed by using Meganmomma advice (kitchen water sprayer). I ignored my vets advixe which was to kick them. I found a cutting board worked well too. Anyway, fast forward, he and barney are BFFs. Winston is a very nice dog, very sturdy and outgoing. He is very pretty and he seems healthy still now that he's 3. He is going for his dental cleaning in two weeks from now. All in all, we call Winston "the low carbon footprint" because he is an easy dog as all young Yorkies should be. I insured him just in case but hope to lose money on that! He is a good boy.

Thank you all for sharing. I think it's important to preach rescue and by sharing our stories it helps to others to realize that rescues and rehome have so much to give. <3

I have also had 5 others that we had adopted from Rescue Groups that have since passed. Most the ones we have adopted have been older.

Lovely stories! My Luna is a rehomed/rescue. I wanted Cayo to have a little sister, and had the opportunity to get a baby girl, but she didn't make it because her lungs were not fully developed. I was so sad, I started looking at internet classifieds. DH didn't know a thing about my plans! I found a breeder, and went to see the babies, when suddenly he offered me this beautiful scared, one year old girl. He said a lady was selling her because she was leaving Puerto Rico to another state, and couldn't take her. He bought it from her. As soon as I saw her I fell in love. I just couldn't take a puppy, which other person surely was going to take, and leave Mia Sophia, (her name then), to her luck...so now she has been one month with us. On the way home the breeder called me and said his wife noticed while bathing her that it seemed she was starting her heat. OMG! A very fast stop at Petsmart so I could buy some "panties" and liners! She threw up 3 times getting her home! Cayo, (8 months), also fell in love with her. I wanted a new start for her, so we changed her name to Luna Mar.They have become best friends, or should I say, brother and sister? She is scheduled to be spayed next week. She has gained at least one pound. She was around 3 pounds when we got her. Looked very skinny. Didn't know how to play with toys or us...how could that be? I didn't understand this for all the dogs I've ever had were very playfull. She is always looking for my lap and follows me anywhere I go when they are not resting on their playpen. She is starting to smell Cayo's toys, (he thought the ones I bought her were a gift from her to him), and sometimes tries to play with them buy takes a step back when Cayo, little selfish baby, comes after them. She now plays with our hands and is getting pretty friendly with DH. They both are very loved ones!
Here she is now, and also another with Cayo all buckled up in the back seat. She still throws up, but less. Need her to get use to travel so she can have nice trips to where our travel trailer is stationed!

After looking and searching for my second girl, Mikki came into our lives. My Mikki is a rehome. She was for sale at a local gas station. A lady worked there and was trying to find a new home for her. She has been a great fit in our family. She was 1 year old when we got her. I am so glad I got her.

Rosie came from my SIL who was breeding Yorkies at the time. She was 6 months old when we got her. Rosie is the first Yorkie we got and is supreme ruler in the house. Lol

Lily came from a breeder. We decided we wanted a puppy and carefully selected a breeder. She was 12 weeks old when we picked her up. She loves her big sisters.

My little girl, Katie, is what I consider a rehomed Yorkie. I'm not sure if others would consider her to be one. She spent her first three years with her show hobby breeder who is also a professional trainer. Katie received her championship at fourteen months of age and had two litters of puppies before she was rehomed at three. She lived a great life in a family setting, and she was used to rides in the car and lots of playtime and trips to the park. It was obvious how loved she was when her first mom spoke about her. Because of this love, Katie is very confident, and she adjusted beautifully with us. Katie was socialized early, has a wonderful disposition, and loves people. All of our much adored Rainbow Bridge babies were with us from the time they were little except for our littlest one, who was given to us by our first breeder at 6.5 months when she remained too tiny to breed. However this experience with Katie has been so amazing, and she has greatly surpassed my wish for a healthy little girl with a nice temperament. Katie is everything we dreamed for and more. She is so loyal, stays by my husband's side all day while I'm at work, and even when she showers me with kisses when I come home, Katie runs back to him and showers him with them, too, so she doesn't leave him out. We believe she loves her new home with us, but we also believe she will always love and be loved by her first mom. We always say we could not love her more, but each day our love grows deeper. I spend hours each day walking and playing with our little girl, and I don't get a lot of sleep, but she fills our hearts and lives with such love and joy, and we will forever be grateful for Katie and the people who helped bring her into our lives.

My Minnie Bear (in my avatar photo to the left) was a rescue. Owners just moved away and left her to die in their backyard. Can't imagine doing that to such a spectacular pup. You could have offered me $10 million for Minnie and I'd say no way in hell!

Oliver was originally a rescued. His previous family rescued him from a trailer park home at 2 month old, skinny, full of fleas and had worms problem. They took care of him, but eventually couldn't due to their work schedule. We didn't think we were ready for a dog and had no clue our first dog would be a yorkie. But he was the sweetest thing in the world, so we volunteered to take him in. He was a little over 3 months then.

Oliver is now a healthy, mischievous and loving 9 month old Yorkie. He enjoys walks, car rides, trip to the pet store and dog park with mommy. He's also been on his first road trip from his south Florida home to Savannah, GA and stayed at his first pet friendly hotel!! Oliver is expecting to join the million leaf peepers and hike the North Carolina mountains this coming fall.

Default Annie

I got Annie in late March (5 1/2 months old) this year from a rescue who obtained her from a BYB who was keeping her in a rabbit hutch. Drove about 2 hours to get her. She had NO people contact and was scared and anxious. I only work 3 days a week and my Boss lets me bring her to work. At almost 9 months, I can finally report that she is doing wonderful! Going to work has helped her get used to other people and she now meets and greets everyone coming in the door! Sleeps cuddled at my side and is now 100% potty pad trained. She has recovered from the trembling and is relaxed enough to just be lazy when she feels like it. The vet says she will probably only make it to 4#s (right now she is 3.5#) but that's OK.... Tiny is fine with me. I've attached an 'at work nap' picture. As you can see, she is a collector of items! I just love her to death!!!
