| That is so wrong in so many way's. That poor puppy and that poor owner. Very sad to think $ comes before life. To ask for $800.00 not even knowing the problem is just plain evil and greedy. They should be reported to someone. There has to be a higher up to look into this neglect of not helping. That just tears me up inside. So very sad that a puppy is suffering and help was there and because of the almighty dollar it my have died. |

It is very, very sad for the puppy and for the owner, but this just reiterates the fact that you MUST have an emergency savings account for your baby. Please don't be caught without a way to save your pet, which is your responsibility, not the veterinarians.

| My sister's friend was in the same situation. Something was wrong with her dog, can't remember what it was, but he DESPERATELY needed help so she took him to the vet. She didn't even have ONE hundred dollars let alone 800.00 UP FRONT! But she was crying and sobbing and let them care for him anyway so somehow she has to come up with the 800 bucks. Who has 800 dollars in their back pocket on any given day and how are you supposed to know when your pet is going to have an EMERGENCY? I could def. not work in a vet's office, I would cry all day at work and never be able to sleep at night after turning away an animal in need of medical care. Ugh.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | This thread is 3 years old...but it always bears repeating...either have an emergency fund account or perhaps open a charge card that you use once a year to keep active. I see this as no different than seeing a medical doctor...most of ours now require we pay our co pay BEFORE ever entering an examing room. At our ER vets...you aren't charged before being seen...however when certain tests are recommended...they will give you an estimate of the bill and then you must make payment...and this procedure continues until the testing etc is completed. There aren't any surprises...they told you the cost. I think it's your responsibility to have the means available...not the vet's office.

| I just noticed that this post is originally from 2005 but I will respond anyway. It is just heartbreaking to hear that this could happen but in the reality of things, I can see the other side of the situation too. I just have to say that I am so grateful that our vet lets us keep a "running tab" for our animals. I am paying something every single month on our balance. When it's time to take both dogs and both cats in for annual shots (plus monthly medicines), the total for that day can run over $400. Like my vet once told me.... I know where you live! It does make you wish though that there were vet clinics that treated the "underprivileged" (for lack of better word) just like there are city hospitals that have to take a patient regardless of their insurance or lack of.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | And that's the reason you should set aside money in seperate fund...or open the charge card account like I suggested. So you could come up with that kind of cash.

| Sad, but true. When my little guy Chipper (RIP) had a severe attack from Congestive Heart Failure, we had to take him to an Emergency Vet. It was $1000.00 for that night alone! What if we had been unable to pay it? They would have just turned their heads and sent him home while he was struggling to breathe and choking to death. So very sad and so unfair to these helpless little ones. |

| Well, I am very sympathetic to any animal needing medical intervention and being turned away. But, there are several insurance plans out there for our furry family members. And, a few bucks a month with a small copay is much better to swallow than a whopping $800 all at once. I for one have all of mine insured just for this reason. Yes, I have a small fund put away for emergencies. But, most emergency room visits can eat that up just by walking in the door. |

My Lady has chronic health problems. Her vet bills and medications run close to $5,000 a year. That is my responsibility. I can't expect vets to take care of her for free if I haven't properly prepared for her medical needs. I have found unexpected vet bills that require hospitalization to run between $500-1,000. I think everyone needs to have at least that much in a bank account set aside for pets. Obviously, if you are a multiple pet household, you need to set more aside. Add to the account monthly or better yet, have it automatically deducted. When considering getting a puppy or adding another dog, everyone should take into consideration the long term financial commitment and prepare for it. Trust me, as they age pets can rack up some serious vet bills. I think too many people don't budget past the first year, the purchase price, spay or neuter, etc. Here is a reality check on the cost of owning a dog: The Cost of Owning a Dog | |

| Its ashame that its done but its reality. This is why my furkids have their own savings account that neither I or my husband touch. I started doing this when I found out Mimi had LP. Vet says she doesn't need surgery but you never know. I also learned a lesson when I had Lilly. She needed heart surgery that was 2500.00, I had to take out a loan for that which I am still paying for. Unfortunatley my baby girl didn't make it and passed away the same night after surgery Care credit is good too...I have it. You have to have a back up plan because you just never know. I have $50.00 biweekly that transfers to their account every 2 weeks. I don't even see the money because as soon as my pay check hits my account the money comes out. I will just build up that account because I know more than likely they will need alot of care when they get older. My friends think I'm crazy because my dogs have their own savings account but I tell them everytime that they aren't going to fork up the money if they get sick. So now everytime they're sick they go to the vet and I have no worries of not being able to pay for it. |

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | I have to say, this probably ticks me off more than anything. After reading this I have smoke coming out of my ears. OMG - I'm fuming!!!!! This right here is a perfect example of how SOME vets are JUST in it for the money. I'm sorry, I mean I know everyone has to make a living and you can't get stuff for free, BUT COME ON....how can ANYONE who TRULY CARES about animals turn away a sick baby like this? I'm sure that vet has plenty of money, and I don't think it would have hurt him OR his pocketbook one bit if he could have just let this poor lady pay it out to get her baby the help he/she needed. This is such a big issue with me and I cannot stand to hear about things this like. It ticks me off to NO END!!! Ya know, I am always watching Animal Cops, etc. on Animal Planet and my hubby is absolutely correct. Alot of these owners get chewed out for not taking their animals in to get help when they are sick, but HOW CAN THEY when they are treated like this and turned down for care???? It is just SAD. And I completely understand the whole thing about people shouldn't own animals if they can't afford to take care of them properly, but we don't know EVERYONES story. What if someone gets a dog (or whatever type of animal) and is perfectly well off and then they suddenly lose their job and their animal gets sick? What the heck are they supposed to do then? I mean sometimes these things DO happen. It's just really freaking sad that some vets aren't willing to over look the money even for a SECOND to try and help these poor animals. This is something that really ticks me off and gets my blood boiling. I just feel so darn sorry for the animals (and the owners who are trying to help their pets) is all. I use the most expensive and probably the most "known" vet in town. He is all over the T.V., newspaper, etc. and even though he is expensive, I use him simply BECAUSE you CAN make payments up there, if you need to. Luckily I haven't been in that situation yet but WHO KNOWS when you are going to walk in the door with a problem and your baby ends up needing a $800+ surgery. Some people don't HAVE credit cards, and I'm sure most people can't just pull $800 or more out of their you-know-where!! It just really ticks me off is all. My vet is the ONLY vet in town who lets you make payments if you need to, and I do like that because you just NEVER know. Anyway, that is my little rant I feel really, really sorry for this person who got turned down care for her baby. It just ISN'T fair and I hope and pray that she was able to get help for her little one somewhere else.

I Love My Lil' Punkin's Donating Member | Ok, just read that this thread was from back in 2005 - WAY OLD!! Still though, I hope she was able to get her baby help. I see that most of you were for the vet, or rather just making a point that you do need to have backup funds (or pet insurance) for emergencies like this - and I totally agree 100%. I just get so upset when I hear that someone out there is TRYING to help their baby, and can't. My heart just breaks for the animal is all. This kind of stuff really upsets me
