This thread is 3 years old...but it always bears repeating...either have an emergency fund account or perhaps open a charge card that you use once a year to keep active.

I see this as no different than seeing a medical doctor...most of ours now require we pay our co pay BEFORE ever entering an examing room.

At our ER vets...you aren't charged before being seen...however when certain tests are recommended...they will give you an estimate of the bill and then you must make payment...and this procedure continues until the testing etc is completed. There aren't any surprises...they told you the cost. I think it's your responsibility to have the means available...not the vet's office.
