| New yorkie --- need help pad training I just got my new baby 3 weeks ago. She is 5 months old and am having trouble training her. While I'm gone to work (aobut 10 hours) I gate her in the kitchen with a piddle pad. She doesn't seem to know how to use the pad. She pees and poops everywhere but on the pad. When I'm home I take her outside and she pees, but then comes back in the house to poop, usually on the carpet. She sleeps in my bed with me at night and holds it all night. She also does go on the sofa when she sits with me at night watching TV. If she has to go while she's on the sofa or in my bed, she lets me know by getting in my face and not leaving me alone. My question is, how do I piddle pad train her for while I'm gone during the day? I have no idea how to begin to do this, since I've never pad trained a dog before. Any help would be appreciated. |

Also take her every 2 hours ( I think)..guys correct me if I'm wrong) You can use a tether to make her follow you everywhere. I know for me this worked, because I was FORCED to watch her and not slack off. I do have a question. How is she peeing outside and pooping inside right after. Is she on a leash? When I used to take Sammy out, even in the yard, He would be on a leash. and I wouldn't let him in until he was done. And when we had to transition to the pad, I would still have to have him on a leash so he would stay there. Being consistent I think is really important.Good Luck | |

| I would try just using the pads for now and not taking her outside. We pad trained our puppy first, then she started going outside on her walks by herself, we really didn't train her to go outside. Now she is 7 1/2 mo old and will go outside on walks and when we take her out, but will always use the pad at night and when we are not home. To pad train her we would always put her on the pad when she started looking like she had to go and then give her a treat and praise when she went. It didn't take her too long to pick up on the peeing, but the pooping was harder, we just had to be really consistent, for a while she wanted to poop on the carpet but we always picked her up and moved her, now she mostly poops outside on walks, but will use the pad if she needs to. I think you will have better luck if you focus only on the pads for now, then she won't be confused, good luck! |

| Thanks for all your help. I agree I'm probably confusing the heck out of her. I'll quit the outside part and concentrate on pad training for now. I guess I should put her on the pad every couple of hours and make her stay there until she goes? The pad training is all new to me. |

| Get a puppy crate for her during the day while you are at work. Dogs are denning creatures, so don't feel bad about leaving her in there all day. Make it comfy and home for her. Give her a treat every time you put her in it. Put a bed, toys and her food/water in the crate. Dogs won't poty in their homes. If she does, it's only because she simply could not hold it a second longer. The crate will quickly become her home. I recommend putting her in it for a few hours at a time, just so she can get used to it. When you take her out of it, take her immediately to the pad. Wait with her, wait, wait, wait, until she goes poty, then LOTS of praise. After she goes on the pad, set your microwave timer for one hour (a reminder for YOU) then take her to the pad again, repeat, repeat, repeat. Train her on the pad and only the pad. Don't train her to go outside until she's trained to go on the pad. It's important that the crate isn't too big. If so, she will use one corner of the crate at her poty place and you don't want that. You want the entire crate to be her home. This is what I did and my baby is 100% trained. I'm telling you, setting the microwave for every hour is what worked. It helped ME to remember to take her to the pad. That took maybe three days at the MOST. It was very easy. Good luck! http://www.cuhumane.org/topics/crate.html

| I never used the crate because we work long hours also about 2-3 days a week so what I did was just confine her to the bathroom, she always used the pad and now she has free run of the living room and kitchen of the apt while we are gone and she does great. I know a lot of people think crate training is the only way and for some I guess it is, but for our schedules, confinment worked better. You can't keep her in a crate for 10 hrs and if that is how long you are gone, just keeping her in the kitchen is prob better. Just my opinion! good luck. |

| Hi, welcome to YT! My girl Roxie is a little over 5 months old and I have trained her successfully on pee pads by using treats and lots of praise. I think your little girl will get the hang of it in no time, now that you are sticking just to the pads. Good Luck! I love Ft. Myers and Sanibel Island!! Roxie and I are going to Sanibel for vacation in a few weeks, we cant wait!

| I'm very much against putting her in a crate for 10 hours a day. I would much rather confine her to the kitchen. I have a potty pad down, but she seems to go on the floor instead. I'll try the every hour idea. I'll sit her on the pad every hour and wait for her to do something. If she won't, I'll try again in another hour. In the meantime, I'll leash her to me so I can keep a hawk eye on her. She doesn't seem to sit on the pee pad by herself though and I have to hold her on it. Is that normal? Sometimes I wonder if the knows what I'm wanting her to do. Maybe I don't give her enough credit. Again, thanks for the suggestions. |

| With my experience, whenever Missy would pee or poop we immediately grab her and place her on the pads. Also, there's a certain smell for the pets to know "Ding, Ding!" this is the target. So yeah, I basically just place her on the pads when she is about to pee or poop. Whenever she gave me a single of doing number 1 or 2 (run around in circles, sniffing floor) i grab her immediately and place her on the pad... I thought it was going to be extremely hard for me, since i'm a new owner of a dog, but it turned out to be so simple... when I had to go to school and the family members are at work, we use to leave her in her crate for 8 hours..... but that only lasted 3 days because i can just imagine how stressful it was for her... so we decided to keep her in area which is pretty much baby-proof. | I would try putting some of her urine on the pad, and maybe make the pad area bigger. They make some scented stuff to spray on the pads that can help lure them to it. My boys use the pads while I"m at work (9 hours), but I've noticed lately they've been waiting til I get home and take them outside to poo. It works out nicely for me. Good Luck, I hope everything works out for you.

| My Maxx Is Also 5 Months And In Training. What Works Best For Him Is The Reword He Looks Forwerd To. I Take Him To Work With Me And Dosent Now What To Expect When We Change Location. So I Learned Not To Ever Change Were The Pad Is And Keep It In An Area Were Its Away In The Corner. Also Away From His Food. And When You See Him Sniffing Take Him To That Area That Is Away From Everything. Use The Word Potty Alot When In The Area And Reward Reward Reward
