Default Yorkie Training Help

We have a 9 week old Yorkie that we just bought, this is our first pet ever and we are trying to train her. When we got her from the breeder she was paper trained. She went on the paper for a first few days and then after that she started to go wherever she pleased. I looked around on the web and one of the mistakes that we made was let her have free reign of the house. Now we are aware of that and for the past two days we keep her in her crate. We decided that we don't want to paper train her and rather have her go outside, but we live in Wisconsin and it's really cold outside. Whenever we bring her out she just sits there and shivers and I feel really bad. I put a fleece on her and she still just sits there....If she doesn't go we bring her back and put her back in her crate.....this has been going on for the past day, and she has yet to go...and we know that she has to go because she hasn't in a long time. So we are clueless as to what to do because she just sits there and wants to come back in the house.

If I were 9 weeks old, I wouldn't pee outside in this weather either. We got Roxy about this time last year & I wouldn't dream of taking her outside to potty then. Last winter was wicked weather in Mich. It seems our mild winter is over & temps are bitter. We used pee pads until spring. She actually did pretty good overall. It took a little effort to get her to connect with pottying outside, but a couple afternoons at doggie daycare & she got it. The whole process may have taken a little longer, but she is doing great. This past summer we installed a doggie door which she loves. It seems to really suit the independant part of her personality. Haven't had any accidents in a long time now.

PS: Keeping her contained in just a few rooms while out of the crate is also good. Baby gates, closed door, etc can really help. Roxy has access only to kitchen, dining, living room. Baby gate at hallway keeps her from rest of the house. That will change in the future, but has worked well so far. Good luck!

Agree with above ^ I got Jackson as a 9 week old pup in December of last year and we still went outside to potty though. It was pretty cold and kind of frustrating sometimes when it was freezing and he wouldn't go - but we had a routine... I'd take him outside, let him sniff for 5-10 minutes and if he didn't go, he'd come inside and go right back in his crate or ex-pen. Leave him in there for 10 minutes, then try again. I gave him a yummy treat and tons of praise when he went!

Yeah we want to get her used to the cold, but we have taken her out there 10+ times and she hasn't gone outside, she just went 5 minutes ago inside the house. When we take her outside she will sit/stand and shiver and I feel bad for taking her outside in the cold but I know we have to get her used to it, but I just can't figure out why she won't go once she is outside.

I also have the cold weather problem where I live.....the snow is literally taller/higher than my dog!

With Daisy, the great outdoors is just too distracting for her to concentrate on going potty right now. Think of having a super sensitive nose and going outdoors in 30 degree temps while you are naked to use the restroom! More confusion than concentration, right?

Potty training is still such a new experience, even at 6 months! I have found that the potty pads let me react immediately if Daisy starts to go on the floor.....then, instead of being reprimanded, she is praised and given a treat for finishing her business on the papers. Positive and immediate reinforcement is the name of the game for her, at least until the weather improves.

My dog is both paper trained and outdoor trained. If the weather is really bad, he has to go at night or when we leave him alone, he uses his papers. He will not use them more than once - likes clean papers. I never crate trained, but boxed him in the kitchen when he was small. He is almost two and still uses his papers on occasion. I never have disciplined him for doing wrong. Great praise for doing right. I feel that if they know something upsets you, then they use that against you. Since Zeke does not know that it was bad when he missed his papers or went on the floor, he does not do it when he gets mad at me.

We just got Mack last week. He is 12 weeks old. We live on the Jersey shore where it is not just cold but windy as well. However, I feel that he should be trained to go outside. We have been crate training. This is my first time as well. We have never had a puppy. We usually get rescue dogs and have never had to train. I have read every website on housebreaking yorkies and everyone swears by the crate training. He has been good. Sleeping through the night and no accidents in his crate at all. However he is having on average one accident a day. Today it is cold and very windy. I took him outside several times. He refused to go. Then while I was doing dishes he started to go on the mat at my feet. I caught him and took him outside immediatley. I hope he is getting it, but I know what you are going through .

COngratulations on your yorkie. I have 2 of mine pad trained and 1 outside trained. I just fostered a pom puppy who was 3 1/2 months so a little older but I would take her out every 2 hours and if she didn't go put her back in the crate. She caught on pretty quick but she was a little older. If you really want her to go outside, continue her crate training and I don't know your set up but I have an ex pen attached to the back of my house so I can quickly get them out the sliding glass door to the outdoors. You have to act quick and be attentive to their sniffing around and run her out each time she looks like she is going to pee and say whatever you say to train her. I say Go Potty and be sure you praise and give her a little treat when she goes outside. She is very young and will have accidents but she will catch on.

All of outdoors can be quite overwhelming you very young puppies. I mean, it's soooo huge out there. It can be overwhelming to them even in warm weather. She's just a baby. Your pup has a lot to learn about the world, and it's not going to happen overnight. Keep taking her out. If she has used a pee pad, take it out with you so she can sniff it. Take out some poo so she can sniff it out there. It may help connect the dots for her. This is a tough period for our little ones, & we must be patient. Each learns in it's own time. Time & patience, time & patience. (Heavy sigh) Wish it could always be simple. Don't give up! Good luck.

My little guy Lincoln is 3 1/2 months old and doing pretty well w/ the potty training...whew!! He does still mess in the house once in a while but it's ALWAYS my fault for missing the cues or having my hands full w/ my kids so I just try to stay on top of him. Mostly I don't even wait for his cues...I take him out when he wakes, after he eats or plays. I don't live in a really cold area but he still gets stubborn from time to time if it's raining hard or if it's really wet out. He's never enthused to go outside ever and that kind of worries me a bit but hopefully he'll get better as time goes on...
ANYWAYS, I think you'd have some luck putting the pads and/or newspaper outside where you'd like the potty spot to be. And if it'll help all of you relax a bit then revert to the potty pads for a while and see if the outside will work for ya at a later date!
Good luck!!

Got Sandy when he was 11 wk old and he's paper trained. He was a good with paper - he knew where he should do his business. After we came back from our Christmas vacation at the bf's parents' (we were there for a week), Sandy started to do it anywhere he wants! We live in an apartment and he has access to all the rooms except for my craftroom. It's really frustrating because I want him to be that good potty trained pup again.
