| When do I know when to trust her.... PLEASE HELP!!! Hi everyone I have been training Roxy now for the past 2 weeks today is the first day in our 3rd week..... I purchased the book How to housebreak your dog in 7 days...... I wanna say she is getting the hang of it. BUT how do I know when to trust her... How do I know when its ok to leave her out of the kennel and make her space bigger... Before she had roam of the full kitch and the bedroom but that didn't work. So I had to train her to potty outside. So far so good she had 2 accidents since we started but then again it was in the beginning.... I noticed one accident the other day she went on the rug of the bathroom but I think it was cause I was in bed so she just went about it and I thought I had the kitchen gate closed (my fault) So my question is should I give her a bigger space? To see if she has any mistakes while I'm away...... I make it a given to go at lunchtime so I can take her for her walk and give a drink of water... But having this schedule everyday. Sort of gives me no life.. LOL!!!! 5:30am Wake up go out 5:40-6:00 free period in kitchen 6:00 food and water 6:30am go out 6:45-12:15 leave confined 12:15-12:30 water and go out 12:30-5:00 confine 5:00 go out as soon as home 5;15-6:00 free period in kitchen 6:00 food and water 6:30 go out 6:45-7:45 free period in kitchen 7:45pm confine 10:00-10:30 go out confine over night

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | only way to know it to try. i did the same routine 3 years ago with morgan (didn't have a book then). She was confined to a little less then half her crate (she was very small). next step was to give her the whole crate to see what she would do. after a few weeks of that i put her in an ex-pen. she had a few accidents in there so we went back to the crate for a few days. The next time i put her in the ex-pen i changed the shape so it was smaller AND put her crate in there as well to make it even smaller. We worked up from there. so everything was very very slow.

| I dont want to sound negative but it seems like your puppy spends alot of time confined...I would trust her now, use a pee pad and just leave her in the kitchen with toys , a bed and a couple pee pee pads... if you are working and not home , its a long long day to expect your puppy to hold it to go outside.. Laci is 8 months old and I still have to take her outside every 2 hours so she wont have accidents in the house... I read that book and I think it would be great for a bigger dog with a bigger bladder that has the ability to hold urine for extended periods of time. I would... either attach an expen to her crate or confine her to the kitchen giving her toys, crate and bed with pee pads.... I had great sucess with that and was later able to teach her to go outside... I wanted her to be trained for both when I got her because it was a long cold winter with way to many snow storms...JMHO

| I started Jackson in a crate but he didn't spend very much time in it because I was home so often to watch him - but after about a month of being left in a crate while I left the home, I switched to the ex-pen. Bought him one of those and left him in there with a blanket, toys, etc (no pee pad because I was outdoor training) He never once had an accident in the pen. Then I started leaving him in my bedroom which has a baby gate in the door, no accidents there. By about 5 months, he was 100% trustworthy in the home while gone, however I still block him from the upstairs when I leave. It all depends on the dog. I know with Jackson he never had accidents while we weren't home because he just sleeps the whole time.... his accidents always happened while I WAS home, go figure.

| I hope that everything works out for you, i think that she might be crated up to much, i think that pee pads are the way to go being that she's so little things are going to happen, being that she's not a big dog its gonna be harder for her to hold it until you get home from work, we leave a pee pad for payslee when we go to work for those just in case moments. I really hope everything works out for you |

| She isn't in crate 9 hours straight... I come home at lunch for the past 2 weeks its been working... Trust me I felt the same way but being that she is older now I feel like crate training her to potty outside is the way to go..

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | there is nothing wrong with the way you are training your puppy. many people have success training this way. you tried a different way earlier and it didn't work. now your starting over and she needs to be confined in order to learn. i don't blame you for not wanting to use pee pads. i don't like them either. i don't want a dog peeing or pooping in my house so i confined her and trained her to hold it.

| I see that your having a hard time with getting roxie to pee outside, i also see that you do let her out before you go to work, and then when you take your lunch at 12:15, inbetween those times do you limit her water and food or do you leave them? |

After trying pee pads, I think outside is the way to go too. I think you should just slowly increase her space. Try a small area of the kitchen then after a week without accidents, make it a little bigger and so fourth. If she has an accident, make it smaller. If shes holding it while shes in the crate while you're at work she should be able to hold it in a bigger space while you at work, but I wouldn't leave too much water out and no food.

| do you not leave water with her all day??? if she's home crated or kenneled during the day while you are gone she needs to have access to water the entire day...it's cruel to have her in a crate for more than a few hours, and if you are confining to an exercise pen you should have water down all day for her. as for potty training, i've had mine for two weeks and there's no way in HECK she could be reliable in that short of time to not have accidents. plus depending upon the age, they may tear your house to bits by chewing everything in site. i'd wait at least 2-3 months before opening up more of the house, start small with just the kitchen or bathroom with tiled flooring under her...if there are NO accidents for several weeks then you can begin to trust the puppy. not until then!! good luck, happy potty training. |

| i just wanted to add, i crate train as well, BUT i never leave her in a crate for more than 2 hours when i'm not home, she goes into the x pen if i'm gone for work and hubbie is gone too, we bell train...you might try that, use a service bell and train her that when she needs to go outside she has to ring the bell to let you know. hit her paw on the bell everytime you take her outside to pee, it took Sadie two weeks to learn to hit the bell herself and even still we have accidents, it takes them awhile, but it's worth it having a way they can tell you when it's time. and please use an expen not a crate when you are gone for a long day, i know you tried that before, but putting a bed or crate in the xpen with toys and water is better than just a small crate, she's in the crate all night 8 hour or more, she should be in there all day tooo that's not very fun for her!!! |

| Hi for some reason I'm not getting the emails that I'm getting responses weird... Anywho... I expanded her crate I took the divider and made the space bigger. So far she has been doing good... She is 39 weeks (9 3/4 months) I believe she is old enough to old it for a certain amount of time...I've read its usually an hour for every month of age. Also I have tried xpen for over 4 month of the length of time of having her... It didn't work. The book that I read says to restrict her water and her food for when she is in her crate. I don't want to give her access to water to drink and then have her have an accident in her crate. Its happened before.. One day it was so hot outside that I let her have water when we came back inside and then she had an accident in her crate. So far I believe that she is catching on.. This week I am going to open her crate fully maybe Wednesday I tried it last night but I just saw it SO big for her. I'm hoping that by next week I can have her only in kitchen. Now that her food is limited she wont feel the urge of having to go poop or pee during the day while in Kitchen....
