| Question for those who use Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Lacey has been eating this food for over 3 weeks now and absolutely loves it. I purchased the first two bags from 1-800-Petmeds and they arrived and looked fine. Shipping was outrageous though, so I located a couple of stores here locally that sell it. I bought two bags of food from one Thursday (Duck Medallions and Beef Bites). When I opened the bags both had a lot of ice in them and the Duck appeared to be freezer burnt. Neither had expired, but the Duck had an expiration date that was close (5-12-13). The Beef Bites expire 12-26-13. The Bites don't appear to be freezer burnt, but there is quite a bit of ice in the bag. Is this usual when purchasing this food? I want to continue feeding this food, but I'm a little leary about what is safe based on how these two bags looked. I threw the Duck out as I didn't like what it looked like at all. Is ice in the bag of Beef Bites a problem? I did go to another store Saturday and got a bag of Duck Medallions and they look OK (expiration date 1-16-14). It seems this company uses a year expiration date which seems a long time to avoid freezer burn. |

| I don't use the food but it sounds like the bags are questionable. When it doubt, throw it out. I'm sorry but I think I'd return the product. You are feeding something raw, and that comes with risks, and I don't think it is prudent to increase those risks with food products that might already be impaired. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but speaking generally, I would be concerned that the freezing or handling might have been compromised based on what you've said about the product.

| Exactly why I stopped feeding them premade raw...our local store didn't know how to handle it. The packages would be filled w/ice & the sliders/ nuggets would be all stuck together! It was obviously melted & put back in the freezer...not sure if they let it sit in the back room b4 stocking it or if it melted during delivery. Took it back & got another bag, but it was a strange color & it made Mimi throw up, so I threw it out & I don't go to that store anymore.

| I've tried feeding this brand of food & have purchased a few bags of the "nibblets"...I think that's what they're called. They're the smaller, bite sized version of the medallions. Personally, the bags I purchased looked okay. I think a lot of it has to do with the store you buy them from. If your pup does well on it & if you really want to continue using the food, maybe you can look for a store that has a lot of traffic. That way, you're assured of a product that's more fresh & handled in a better way. And I wouldn't be shy about voicing my concerns to the store manager. It is FOOD, after all. I know that Petco carries that food in my area. Nevertheless, I would definitely ask for a refund from PedMeds & the local store you purchased the freezer burnt product from. And just so you know, the reason I didn't end up feeding this food wasn't because I had a problem with the product. My pups are finicky & they wouldn't eat it. Raw, freeze-dried food is also another, more convenient, alternative if you'd like to change products, but continue feeding raw. Stella & Chewy's & Primal make a good, freeze-dried raw. Good luck!

| Thanks everyone for the replies. I did find another store a little further away that told me they sell a lot of this food, so hopefully their food will be fresh, They sell Primal and Nature's Varieity Instinct. I threw the other bag of Bites out, too. I will try the Stella and Chewys freeze dried. I bought the Nature's Variety Raw Boost and Lacey will pick the freeze dried bits out of it and leave the kibble. So freeze dried may be the way to go. How I wish she would just eat kibble. She is one stubborn little girl. Just for clarification, the PetMeds food was fine. It arrived packed in dry ice and was frozen hard as a rock. It was the $19.00 shipping for one bag that made me seek a local source. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feed Primal, NV or similar and I do see some variety in the bags in terms of ice. I've never had any problems or issues with the foods though. Also, the meat will sometimes slightly vary in color from the last bag, and this okay - it doesn't mean something is wrong. If you feel uncomfy w/ a bag though, I believe they're always returnable and exchangeable.

Thank you. That is reassuring about the ice. The two bags I purchased Saturday had a tiny bit of ice, but nothing like the two bags I bought last Thursday where the medallions were coated in ice. Wish I could you say 'Can I open the bag and look before I buy?' | |

I used to buy NV raw medallions from a local boutique pet store (all high-quality pet food, not a puppy seller), and occasionally I would get a bag with a little ice or a few of the medallions stuck together. Nothing too horrible, and certainly nothing that would make it necessary to throw the food out. Then Petco started carrying the food and I had a coupon so I decided to buy it there. I have never seen those issues since I started buying it at Petco. I think they must keep the freezer on a setting that is a little bit cooler.

| I bought some frozen raw food before that was discolored, looked freezer burned, and was all icy and frozen together. I took it back to the store I bought it from right away and he gave me a different bag, no questions asked. And, we checked the new bag right there to make sure it was ok before I left. I guess it's too late though since you have already thrown it out, but a good store would take it back and give you a replacement or refund.

| I just have a quick question, I was thinking about starting my cat on this brand. I've never tried giving her raw before. I wanted to try the frozen medallions but I don't know how to prepare it. I thought they would be semi-frozen and ready to feed (that's how some were doing it on youtube), but seeing how you guys say its sometimes freezer burnt, Would I have to thaw them out? Sorry If it comes across as a dumb question. I'm new with all this stuff.
