| Making a difference........ For all of you animal activists out there... I need your help!! What is the best way to make an impact on these STUPID pet stores? I recently found one in Alliance, Ohio that has FILTHY kennels- most of the puppies cages had diarrhea in them(gee- from the filth?). they have 3 Yorkies as well as a few other higher end breeds. IT MAKES ME SICK!! I left the store and cried the entire way home! I want to help but don't know where to start. I know rescuing them isn't a good idea, as this keeps funding their operation. Any advice is much appreciated- I want to make a difference!

| was this a kennel or a puppy store? how are their dogs registered? you can complain to the registry about this place. if it is a store, i would complain to the states animal health and welfare dept or animal control.

| This is a small pet store- they sell puppies and kittens as well as other small animals and supplies. I Emailed the Humane Society but have not gotten a response from them. The dogs are ACA registered.

those poor poor puppies - Also the HUMANE SOCIETY and the ASPCA is a good place to start - too bad you can't get pictures of the conditions...that helps but don't get yourself in trouble. When I had to get help for a neglected dog - I found phone calls get a faster response - you can call the humane society and talk to someone there ...

| i would also call aca as well. go back w a camera and say you are taking a picture to show your family to see if they like the dog or cat......make sure you get good photos and send them to the newspaper like "V" stated.

| Thanks Villette! I am going to try and get a few pictures if I can. I am also going to call Humane Society as well, since my Emails have gotten nowhere!! I wish I could go in there and take them- I just spoke to a friend that lives in that city, and I guess they are notorious for having sick puppies. Why in God's name then can't they be shut down???!!!!!! This is SO frustrating!!!

| This is a differrent approach I am in no way supporting pet shops that sell live animals. I would like to see an end to this generally cruel practice..... with that said To help the immediate plite of the poor little fellas in puppy and kitty prison, offer to volunteer to help clean the cages. I would also work with this Mom and Pop shop and maybe help educate them and encourage them to stop selling puppies -- or at the very least buy healthy pups and kittens from reputable breeders. If they agreed to let you volunteer, at leat the babies there NOW would not suffer quite so much. Sometimes setting a quiet example works better than getting your tail feathers riled up and screaming. If you can change this one pet shop, then you have done a HUGE good deed. Thank you so very much for being such a caring person. |

WOW Chattiesmom! That is a GREAT idea!! This is a very small store- so they may be open to letting me volunteer. I held the one little Yorkie in my arms the other day and my heart was breaking- it is so sad to see them in these conditions. If I can be a small spot of sunshine in these babies lives, then I will feel like I have truly made a difference in this world!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | FOX news is big on helping animals as we saw with Brushy creek - also Inside Edition may want to do something on horrible pet shop conditions - they have segments on animals too - but if you CAN get pictures - that gets peoples attention fast.... The Houston Animal Cops I dealt with (when I reported the dog in a neighbors yard) were at their house in less than 48 hours - they told me the photos were what did it. I still have the pics on my computer and they look just as horrible as they did the day I took them |

| Most stores don't use volunteers because of insurance issues. If you were to get hurt in the store, they could get sued. Copy some information off the net about puppy mills and the horrible conditions the animals are in and show give it to the shop owner. Some shop owners swear their pets come from local breeders, but most times that isn't true. If they continue to sell these puppies then you can actually picket in front of the store, but be sure to be so many feet away from the door. Carry large pictures on the board of puppy mill dogs. There is a lot of information on the net tellling you how to go about the picketing. Have some friends help you as it carrys more weight. |

| Question... I agree with Chatties mom that the best first approach is to offer to volunteer and possibly help educate the owners about this. BUT how do I do this in a non-confrontational way? It is hard to say "your kennels are FILTHY and DISGUSTING" in a nice way. Ironically enough, the owner was just in the place where I work and I spoke to him about volunteering to clean the puppies cages. He has no clue- he thought I was doing it to be around the puppies, when in reality that is not the case. He said he would check into letting me possibly volunteer. I didn't really try to confront him, as I am trying to gain trust so he will hopefully listen and realize I am trying to help, not judge.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | go girl - then you can get LOTS of really high impact pictures when they aren't watching you and maybe get someone to come see this place and possibly citate them for neglect. Someone needs to be those poor dogs voice and it sounds like you're on your way !! GOOD LUCK and I'm proud of you - that's a great thing you're trying to accomplish. |
