| OK boyz and girls- let's get this straight- although we are all different there are some pretty basic weight loss principals and you don't have to spend a fortune to lose weight. First of all, with the exception of maybe 1/2 of 1% of you, no, your problem isn't genetic. Secondly- PORTIONS, PORTIONS!! You USA people- Way way too large portions. When I visit, I eat out in restaurants, usually two starters are more than enough for an entire meal as long as there's some protien. A serving of fish or chicken per meal should be no larger or thicker than the palm of your hand (not including fingers) Protein with every meal- but make it lean- egg whites, skinless chicken, turkey, ostrich, or fish. Vegies and fruit If it comes in a package-leave it there! Think lean and green. I read the book, the Zone and it truly changed my life. It explains a lot about nutrition, some of which I knew and a lot I didn't. I still reread it from time to time just to reinforce and reexamine some of the information. On nutrition (to oversimplify it) I watch my sugar intake, no rice, no bread, no milk (yes to nonfat yoghurt) and very, very little pasta. Starches convert to sugars in our blood and this is more quickly converted into fat in our bodies unless we burn it off. Carbohydrates in the form of green vegetables are great for you- eat 'em. Coffee- If you want to lose weight - stay away from coffee and black tea. It will raise your cortisone levels in the blood and keep you from losing weight. Green tea without sugar is great for you and will give you that caffeine boost in the morning that you may need as I do. Exercise- Genie is wise! - You need to get your heart rate up. If you can only run for three steps and then must walk- do it, then walk a bit, then jog a bit. When I started running I could only do it for around 4 minutes without stopping. Now I am running 1/2 marathons. I'm slow, but I can do it. Muscle burns fat. You need to build muscle. Stairs are great even if you do them slowly. Yoga and Pilates- EXCELLENT! Also for a terrific at home workout- I love David Kirsch. He has a book and DVD called the New York Body Plan. His workout which can be done on a yoga mat with some light weights, a medicine ball and a balance ball is incredible. He has a moderated workout for beginners. The hardest part of working out is putting on those workout clothes and shoes. I know, I've been there. Sometimes I think I'll just put on the clothes but not do anything I feel so tired. Of course once you get started and after you're done, you'll feel great. If some of you want to use a meal replacement cause you're on the go or don't have time to always shop- STAY THE HECK AWAY FROM SLIMFAST!!! Full of bad stuff. I swear by an incredible meal replacement called The Ultimate Meal. I love it and especially at night, I sleep better and feel better in the morning after I've had it. It is kosher, nonfat, good for diabetics, vegan and more. Look it up on the net. David Kirsch has a great after workout shake I like in Vanilla and Chocolate- it's called the meal replacement shake. I love it- it tastes great and doesn't have the junk that slimfast does. So save your money on the "quick fix let us hold your hand programs" and do it yourself. Last but not least- Water- drink water. Water. Water. Herbal tea too. Good luck all and remember- you're losing weight for your health- it can save your life and give you the QUALITY of life in later years that you deserve. |

| That is such a great point... the portion sizes have become rediculous. I got the New York Body Plan book but have yet to do the workouts. My sister did them and lost a bunch of weight but she said that they take a little while to get a hang of. |

| Yes, I agree with your sister. That workout is super effective but I certainly didn't get through the whole thing the first time I tried. It took me about five days to build up through the first few exercises. I also didn't do it in the supposed hour at first. I had to stop and rest after 3 or 4 different exercises. My pushups took longer. At first I could only do two real pushups. Yes, two. I am up to 50 now in 5 sets of 10. Just remember that like all good things- baby steps first. The video is a must because David himself is a good presenter and motivator. It's the first time a workout worked so well for me so quickly.I do Yoga on the days of the easy David workout. It was David Kirsch's program that got me motivated to run again because he insists on 45 minutes of cardio prior to doing his workout since cardio really burns the fat. But honestly, I couldn't do it at first and had to build up. My favorite qoute from David is when he says how he thinks that a healthy diet and good exercise plan can give us the body and shape we want without going under the knife of a plastic surgeon. I never have, but too many of my friends under 40 have and I hope that I never do. Good luck and have fun with it! Stick with it for at least a week. For the first week you may feel weak, kind of sick since your body is adjusting to the new routine and healthier diet, but by the second week you'll start feeling like Wonder Woman (if you're old enough to know who she is). |

| You have got to remember that a diet is how you eat, not what you do to lose weight. You should have a healthy diet everyday. This is a way of life. If you learn how to eat healthy, you will drop to your right weight and stay there. Remember the food pyramid when you were 8 years old in middle school? You cannot eat better than that! Follow that, correct portion sizes, you do not need and should not ever cut any food group out of your diet. This just causes you to gain weight faster when you get off your 'diet'. Weight watchers is excellent! They work on your emotional eating and how you mentally perceive food. They encourage exercising and they do not cut out any food group at all. The meetings HELP sooo much and you get many many great ideas from others. I need to lose 15lbs. I was at a fine weight, but I started dating a guy who took me out to eat all the time , since my weight was not a problem I didnt think about what I ordered, soon I found the scale went up about 15lbs last year! YUCK!!! soo I decided to join weight watchers through my work so that I am accountable for my eating to others. Its GREAT!!! Ive lost 1lb a week for the last 4 weeks. slow & steady. Concentrating on losing weight is hard! Depriving yourself is a big NO-NO, not even to jump start it! Just keep in mind that you are embarking on a journey and creating a new way of life for yourself, a healthy way of life! You want this weight to stay off for good, so you must create a balance in your wants with your needs. GOOD LUCK!!! I think its awesome that you are taking the iniative to do this! |

| Thanks celstu1 for your post.......I think I am doing awesome and some may think 10 lbs in 2 weeks is alot which it is but all I am doing is eating right! I am not depriving myself of any food I have starches, plenty of veggies, protein, dairy, ect....Sometimes I think I am eating too much but the key is I AM EATING ALOT OF HEALTHY THINGS....like at dinner I probably will have some protein (probably will be a 6oz steak) 2 of veggies, and a small salad....I think LA does have a great plan which probably didn't take a rocket scientist to create and I drink my 64 oz of water each day.......This is a DRASTIC CHANGE from what I was eating before....Do you know that I would eat out sometimes 4 times out of the week

Sooo good for you!! That is excellent!!! Its mostly water weight that you lose in the first couple weeks! It really helps you to stay motivated too though! Its really about changing your habits so you don't have to worry about losing weight ever again! its great that you are doing that! You can have root beer though! don't deprive yourself entirely... either have diet, or have a glass of real rootbeer once a week! Everyone has their weakness! Oh I love sunkist sooo much, Im not a big soda drinker really thank god, but I dont care for the diet sunkist, so once every couple months I'll buy a bottle of sunkist and I'll enjoy it to the fullest! It helps me from binging and drinking a 2 liter bottle in 1 night! haha | |

I really really love it there and best of all it's free and a great way to stay on track! Just the calorie counter alone has really helped me to see how much I was eating. Now when I make a decision on what to eat, I base it on my calorie count on Sparkpeople ![]() Just wanted to letcha know |

| Good luck! My co-worker entered a radio contest called the "biggest loser" and she was selected along with 4 others she will have to go to LA weightloss and do the program for 10 weeks. At the end of 10 weeks the person who has lost the most weight goes to the Bahamas all expenses paid and gets $500 spending money. We are excited for her and I hope she does well.
