| Vacuum Cleaner - recommendations I need a new vacuum cleaner. I have a heavy self-propelled windtunnel ultra that is great to use in the basement, as all the finished part is carpeted and it cleans well. But it is really heavy and I am getting sick of hauling it up & down the stairs, so my Mum wants to buy me a new one for Christmas to use on my mainfloor. My house is only ~1000sq ft. It's all hardwood, with large area rugs in the living room and dining area and throw rugs in the kitchen. I swifter (& damp mop) the hardwood, so its basically for the large rugs, and using tools for drapery/upholstery and corners/crevices/vents. It's just me and ZoE at home and we don't creat that much mess, just crumbs and dust mostly. I just want something small & lightweight that cleans well. I had a roomba before and didnt care for it as it cleaned poorly. Any suggestions? Thanks

| I did some research on Consumers Report and was disappointed no vacuum cleaner got rave reviews. You would think someone could invent a vacuum, that is lightweight, cleans really good, does not sound like a jet engine and doesn't cost the same as a new car. If you can get on their site consumersreport.com they compare all models . I ended up with a Kenmore upright when I bought a new vacuum. It's a joke at my house how many vacuums I burn through in a 2 year period. I have heard the Shark is a good vacuum also.

| Ive read reviews and they are so mixed on every model out there. I went shopping today and checked them out in person. They all look so cheap and plastic. The plastic clips that hold all the canisters in place look like the would break easily. I'm leaning towards to a shark. The main complaint I read is that it tips over when using wand/tools.

| Mine is a Dyson It was expensive, but I have two cats and a yorkie in a small living space, under 1000 square feet. You wouldn't believe what it pulls up when I do my floors. The dust and cat hair are invisible until they get picked up in the vac then the carpet is back to a nice loft again. Look at the different models, I have the animal (5 yrs) but they have a cordless one that looks great! |

I've always had three vacuums at one time so I've had experience with alot of brands, as I liked to keep one on each level of my house rather than hauling them up and down the stairs. But since then, my kids each took one to college with them. Now Im in a new tiny house with one old hoover, that while great on carpet, is too heavy to be hauled up from the basement on a regular basis. And now i'm worried that if that old thing breaks, I'll have to haul the new one downstairs to clean, so lightweight is a top priority.

| Your Dyson broke and clogged?! I have a Dyson Animal also. I am notorious for cloggin vacuums. I can't be bothered to pick up items large enough to pick up, or take out the hair that gets tangled around the brushes. The Dyson has never clogged on me. Plus the can is easy to take out and empty, and all the pieces click together and fit very nicely.

| The Animal. The purple one. We got it about a year after they came out. I'm surprised to hear a lot of people don't like them! I always hear people don't like them bc they think they are too expensive, but never heard about people who actually had them that didn't like them.

| Dyson here also DC65 Multisurface, figured I didn't need the animal since the animal doesn't shed, but did need multifloor and something that will vacuum deep and get the dander up. I've only had it a month but it really cleans great! |

| I have the Dyson animal too, and I have never had any clogging issues with it. I've had it long enough I am considering trading it in. I understand your feelings on the plastic parts too as that is something I always look at and wonder how plastic can hold up, but it has. We have had it since they first came out so quite a while and sure, there is some wear and tear with 2-3 times a week use. But, did you know if you register your Dyson, and call them when something breaks or you need a part they'll send it to you, free. I've had them send me a new brush head, and a belt a few years back, and I'm getting ready to have them send me another replacement.

| I recently purchased a hoover cordless. I got tired of lugging around our dyson (first model) up/down the stairs and having to plug/unplug to get around different parts. So I wanted a lightweight, cordless vacuum that wouldn't burn a big hole in my pocket. Settled with this one: Amazon.com - Hoover BH50120 Air Cordless... Home Depot was actually having a sale so I got it at $199. I got it earlier this week and vacuumed the big area rug in the living room and entire upstairs carpet. So far, I have to say I'm very happy with the purchase. |

| I found a youtube clip that compares dyson vs hoover cordless and one that just reviews the hoover (I think this would give you a general idea of all around performance and what you'd expect from a cordless vacuum). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipp-I9lJt3k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvKRXOJz87M |

I walked through my last house with an electrician as it was being built and put plug points all over the place, taking into consideration where I might possibly place furniture. Then I moved to this little house built in the 1950s and there are hardly any plug points, and of course, the few that I have are always behind furniture. I have never lived anywhere that I used extension cords as much.

| Karan for the wood floors and area rug I bought a cheap stick vac at Big Lots, I can't even think of the brand but it only cost around $25.00. I liked it so much I bought a second one for my upper level, it does great on the wood and ceramic and even on the in my great room on the berber. It's so easy to move around, and it picks up great. It has a small bag that I dump out and they after about three uses, blow it out with the air compressor. My sister has even more wood floors than I have and she also has some sort of stick vac.
