| I don't have a problem with "OM Gosh" OM Goodness" but do not like to hear God's name used. I would offer either of the others as an alternative. My biggy right now is kids at school what to say 'frickin' or 'freakin'. I don't like the way those sound coming out of a 10 y.o. mouth. Oh My Goodness, I am becoming my old teacher |

| When my kids were little I did not allow them to say "shut up" I just think it is very rude. Well one day my daughter came off the bus and ran to me, the big tattle tail that she was, and said, "Mommy, Joe said the S word" Of course I'm thinking the worst. She said "the sha" word. He said shut up to her on the bus and she freaked. lol I also didn't allow them to say "hate", I think it is way to harsh. I would tell them to just say "I don't like" PS-- my two oldest are now 21 and 19.

| Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I was raised Catholic. Went to church every sunday, CCD program 2 weeks every summer, Reconciliation program, and then saturday Confirmation program up until I was 16 years old and Confirmed. My parents still go to church every sunday and my dad is very involved in helping the church. That said, I have no problem using "oh my god" and have never gotten in trouble for saying it. I did get in trouble for using certain phrases involving Jesus when i was at that age of testing my limits with my parents. Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. It is just a phrase used to exclaim shock or awe now a days and is not used to be disrespectful, or to take the Lord's name in vain. I think the way it is perceived is generational, and depends on where and how you were raised. As far as "goodness", "gosh", and "gee whiz" being used, i'm even more confused about how those terms can be offensive

haha yea i can totally understand what you mean as well. i guess it's just the simple fact that God's name is supposed to be respected and feared in a totally different way than our names are. to us we would never care that much, but to such an awesome and powerful deity such as God it changes things up a bit. i try not to take much offense because they aren't using my name in vain, but it does kinda have a harsh sound when you've been brought up to never ever say that. everyone's different all over the world and growing up teaches you to be kind and accepting of many ideas and personalities. so i would never call someone out, but i can't lie and say it doesn't bother me a tad. that's why most of the time you will see me do a OMgosh and not a flat OMG but sometimes i just put OMG totally meaning gosh/goodness and not God. | |

| I agree that "Oh, My God" is actually taking the Lord's name in vain. Taking it in vain, means using it when not talking about Him in a Holy way. It is not right to do that in my mind or my faith. It is a sin, breaking a commandment. But I have done it and I don't get upset when others do it, unless they are my children. I did teach my children NOT to do it and tried not to do it in front of them. But I sin and have not always been perfect. Since we are telling some of the cute children's tales, I thought I would share my brother's most embarrasing retold story. My mom just loves to share this. He was only 3 and was not a napper. Having 6 kids, my mom needed nap time. But my one brother would usully slip out of bed and go down to talk with mom who was usually found ironing away during nap time. She had many a long talk with him while ironing for a family of 8! One day he said, "Mom I have been thinking. I don't want to say stinker anymore. I want to say fart like the big people do. Okay?" She said the serious look on his face and the way he had trouble getting that started, she knew he had been thinking on this a good while. She help back the laughter and told him "no, not just yet. I think "stinker" is good for now." He was okay with that and launched into another story that was probably weighing equally heavy on his young mind. I believe they are all just words and intent SHOULD be just as important as the words. Still, I don't feel comfortable with "Oh, my God" as an interjection. Oh, my goodness, goodness gracious, gee whiz, jeepers, good grief, even oh my gosh sounds okay to me. I have heard some have trouble with gosh but I looked it up and it says: gosh: expressing surprise: used to express surprise, amazement, or pleasure ( informal ) [ Mid-18th century. Substitution for God ] Thesaurus INTERJECTION Synonyms: goodness, golly, gracious, goodness gracious, my, gee, wow, heavens, my goodness, oh my, jeepers So I am good with gosh too.

| I hear people say, "Oh my goodness gracious"....so I assume that what you are asking about is just a shortened version (oh my goodness). I have never heard of this phrase being short for taking the Lord's name in vane. As a child, I was not allowed to take His name in vane. I also wasn't allowed to say, "geez". This being short for Jesus....just wasn't okay in my family. My children have never said, "Gosh" or "oh my goodness", but I don't think that I would be upset if they did. I would assume that shoot is short for sh_t. My daughter said shoot (and also dog-gone-it) when she dropped her toothbrush earlier this evening....it didn't cross my mind to get upset about this, but everyone has their own opinions. |

| A little off topic: When it comes to "bad" words, the F word is one that is the worse one I hate to hear. I just cringe when I hear it. I told hubby if someone says it in the privacy of their bedroom, that is one thing, but not anywhere else. I think anyword can be bad. It is all according to the context in which it is used. For example: saying "God" it can be sd as a cuss word, taking the name in vain, or as a plea as in God help me, pay attention, I need your help. The same with the word sugar. My hubby says this like if he stubs his toe. It is an innocent word, but in that context it could be a cuss word. Does any of that make sense? A coworker of mine will call people on the phone retarded after she gets off the phone with them. It bothers me because my sister is mentally challenged and was called this when she was little sometimes. That is another word I hate. off the soapbox now.
