i wholeheartedly agree. retarded is NOT ok to use! that's offensive to me as well. although it does mean slow, and sometimes my computer can run on the slow side, i do not think calling any human mentally ill or stable retarded is ok or acceptable. same as all of the words we have come up with to describe colors and races. i think they are all wrong. i don't think people should ever say the "N" word even to each other of same color. and i don't think that Guido or Wap should be used for Italians even on shows like Jersey Shore, because that's a derogatory word....any word used to mean something bad is bad plain and simple. goodness is describing excitement or suprise and not meaning something terrible like the S word or the F word does. i do agree that behind closed doors and in the context it can be said the "F" word though strong can evoke and awaken certain emotions, but saying it in public to me you might as well say what u really mean. F.U. would literally translate to "i hate you so much i wish you ill or worse" or it can mean "i want to make love in a very hasty way" either way it's not appropriate in public IMO. but i think a lot of things are inappropriate in public. examples of this: what your sexual orientation is...i personally believe and this is JMO that people should leave their bedroom desires where they belong, in the bedroom. married, single, straight, gay, bi, whatever, please do not bring your sex life to the public eye. i don't want to hear about your sexual pleasures or desires in public or at work. and i sure don't want to see your sexual life literally paraded down a busy street in full flair. straight people do not parade half naked around town and brag about their sexual desires and lifestyles...and it's JMO that other shouldn't either. it's bedroom stuff. do as you will i sure don't descriminate, but let's not make the whole universe aware of it. my big things is BE WHO YOU ARE. whoever you wanna be, just don't expect everyone to want to know ALL about it. do it and be quiet about it, don't push it on people and don't make it such a big deal. God made us all beautiful and human. we are going to disagree on certain things, but if we all do our own thing and don't make a huge deal of it, we can get along a whole lot better. | |

| Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | This thread has been a real eye opener to me about how different countrys can be. Honestly using the phrase "oh my god" to my knowlege has never been an issue here in England, you would hear it said here all of the time. I just dont think people think it is taking the lords name in vain here, its nice to learn about different cultures though. ![]() Swearing is the same, from what ive read and heard on TV swearing is a much bigger thing in the US then it is here in the UK. Especially where I live, you may be shocked, but many people use the F word without even realising they have said it. It actually sounds really bad reading that back but its the truth, here in Newcastle thats just the way most people speak, obviously nobody is trying to be offensive or anything. But then people are offended by different things. Its nice to learn about our differences.

| I agree using the word God or Jesus is wrong when used in vain. There are some religions that consider the names so sacred they are not to be spoken in any context, ever. As for any other words, I for one, believe they are just a happenstance scrambling of the alphabet. In england you use different words as 'bad words' that we don't consider bad, such as 'shag' and 'bloody'. I don't think there are any 'bad words', only what the people around you consider bad, and that is what you have to take into consideration. The 'f' word is one of my favorites and the climate in which I work cultivates and uses that word to its fullest advantage, always has. I wouldn't use it in church or around small children. My children were unfortunately raised in an all white county and since my daughter was the darkest kid in school (she is darker than me) the other kids called her the 'n' word. She used to come home crying all the time. I taught them early on that racial slurs were not to be used, ever, because you never know someone's racial background. There were no Polish jokes in our house, they were Nerd jokes, even way back then (my kids are 34 and 36 now). It isn't the words that are bad, it is the context and how they are used. If they are used to hurt or they are going to be heard by someone that they may hurt or offended then don't use them. That should be the rule of use. Pretty simple.

I believe that words only have as much power as you give them. I also am not religious, so that has a lot to do with it. It is nice to learn about our differences... I will just have to be careful with my verbage in future posts

| When my kids come to me they wear 9 and 15 so they pretty much thought they could get away with verbal murder. our mom let them cuss up a storm for everything from forgetting homework to dropping a fork at the dinner table. for me its not so much what they say as how they say it. i cannot stand to hear the kids talk like ghetto kids in movies(the low income kind not the sad world war two Jewish kind) because of this i make the kids speak perfectly i will not even let them use contractions until they learn to speak like real polite members of society This is only a problem when i slip up or when there friends are over but the only form of even cuss like words i let them use is Gosh
