I also didn't allow them to say "hate", I think it is way to harsh. I would tell them to just say "I don't like"

PS-- my two oldest are now 21 and 19.
I had the same experience with my little nephews, and I was ready to yell at my brother (their father) for using profanity in front of the kids. When I learned the "s" word was "shuttup" I had to do my best to act concerned.
