When my kids were little I did not allow them to say "shut up" I just think it is very rude. Well one day my daughter came off the bus and ran to me, the big tattle tail that she was, and said, "Mommy, Joe said the S word" Of course I'm thinking the worst. She said "the sha" word. He said shut up to her on the bus and she freaked. lol
I also didn't allow them to say "hate", I think it is way to harsh. I would tell them to just say "I don't like"

PS-- my two oldest are now 21 and 19.
