| I'm surprised Sugarmamma hasn't piped up here! Her Sugar, all 3#s of her, can do almost all of a 3+ miles walk on the beach with us! She does have to have a couple of water breaks,

There are times where I felt like I was draggin her all the way home so I had to end up carrying her. I did walk downtown for 3 hrs one time and she was fine and when we got home she just lay on the floor tired. Passed out eventually (for me sometimes a tired yorkie is a good thing) then I'll have time to do some house work =D But everyone else is right. When u see your yorkie slowing down, tongue sticking out and wants to keep stopping you know they are tired! Just try to keep the walk interesting...maybe 5 mins to explore every now and then. I make my yorkie jump on ledges, switch directions when I'm walking so that I know she's paying attention etc. Doesn't matter how long just as long as you both enjoy urselves.

| Molly could walk forever, but since we got our little puppy farm girl, we usually do a 1 hour walk and a 30 minute walk. We get further in the time now, as Poppy walks quicker than she did 6 weeks ago. I look forward to the day she runs about with Molly, bless her.

| My little dude can easily do 3 miles and then come home and run around the house fetching his ball for another 2 hours after. However, in the summer when it's so hot and humid here in the south, we've been doing only about 1.5 miles and waiting until the evening to go. (He's also had some chronic tummy problems, so I've been taking it easy on him, but on the days he feels well, he'll walk longer). You can tell when they are done...they'll start to slow down. Mine starts out running for the first while! People think he does it because I'm really tall and he's trying to keep up with my long legs...but truth is, I can barely keep up with him sometimes! If you are concerned about how far your dog can make it, I would suggest walking in the blocks around your home for awhile. Then if you think he gets tired, you can quickly get back home and rest. |

| That's what I noticed! Kaji is 7 lbs and has walked over 6 miles with me, with a break in between.

| I am worried about walking my 15 week puppy too far. My friend's yorkie has joint problems and her vet said it is from walking her yorkie too far as a puppy. I am worried I am walking my pup too far? Sometimes he sleeps or plays with his toys after our 15 minute walks. Is this too far? |

| I take my two 5 pound yorkies running with me, the farthest I'll take them is 4 miles only because I don't want to over do it with them. I'm certain they can go farther though, because when we get home they immediately start playing with each other, running around everywhere. They love their running, and the exercise is definitely good for them. |

Yorkies are terriers and have lots of energy. A tired yorkie is a good yorkie. I would say your friend's yorkie has joint problems for reasons other than walking. That's the first time in my life I've ever heard that one. IMO - keep up the exercise. It is good for them.

| Teegy and I have gone on a 3 or 4 hour walk. He lets me know when he's tired and I'll pick up up then he wiggles when he wants back down. I always take his portable water bowl and a traveller of water and a portion of food. He'd rather be out walking than inside. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Help! Hi! I'm new to this site, but I have a question about my little guy "Teddy". He is a 7 lb. Yorkie, 3 yrs. old.... When I say the word "walk" he gets soooo excited, runs to his car carrier and can't wait to go, but when we start on our walk, he won't budge! I have to drag him if I try to walk! I end up carrying him for awhile, and then finally he'll start walking after I've walked for some time. What's going on? It's not that he's tired because he does this at the start. Any thoughts from experienced yorkie owners? I feel like the dog whisperer would tell me my dog has me trained! Would appreciate your thoughts! |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Hi Karen, thanks for your response! yes, I have used a harness from day 1...don't want to hurt that tiny little neck! Have tried your suggestion before, but it seems this little man just wants to be the boss. Treats don't interest him at all..it seems he just will not walk till he's good and ready to! (yes.....spoiled rotten!) He definitely is "my baby", and I treat him as such (isn't that what having a yorkie is all about?) So I guess I was just looking for some more tips to try and break this cycle I've created at walk time |
