My little dude can easily do 3 miles and then come home and run around the house fetching his ball for another 2 hours after. However, in the summer when it's so hot and humid here in the south, we've been doing only about 1.5 miles and waiting until the evening to go. (He's also had some chronic tummy problems, so I've been taking it easy on him, but on the days he feels well, he'll walk longer). You can tell when they are done...they'll start to slow down. Mine starts out running for the first while! People think he does it because I'm really tall and he's trying to keep up with my long legs...but truth is, I can barely keep up with him sometimes!
If you are concerned about how far your dog can make it, I would suggest walking in the blocks around your home for awhile. Then if you think he gets tired, you can quickly get back home and rest.
