| Years ago, my mother was sued by someone when her german shepherd attacked two toy poodles. The court ruled that the toy poodles were "personal property" because they were under 10 lbs. and they were allowed to go EVERYWHERE because they were considered personal property. Does anyone know a lawyer or anything about the law that can be checked. I've tried to check it out in Pennsylvania but haven't gotten very far. Maybe I'll email Cindy Adams and see what she knows! We are trying to go to the South Caroline, Myrtle Beach, and can't find a "nice" hotel that will take my baby! It stinks. |

| When I got Pheobe, I didn't know that dog are not allowed in stores like Target, and I was there every weekend with Pheobe and nobody said a word, they just look at me and smile. Now I look for sign, or I will ask, 99% they will say yes, no problem as long she is on her carrier is fine. |

| Mom to Marty & Maddie Donating Member | I agree. A puppy is the best thing in the world when you are depressed. They need no explanation, they're patient, and they kiss away your tears! Marty was my lifesaver when I was feeling down. Quote:

| I talked to my boss (because she raised Guiding Eyes dogs for over 15 years) and she said that people can take their animals into stores and state that they are their therapy dogs but if they are challenged by the manager to show proof they must provide paperwork that also includes a contact number for verification from their doctor stating that this dog is in fact their therapy dog. No one however, has the right to ask 'what is wrong with you'. If someone cannot provide the proper paperwork, then they can be asked to leave. I think this is fair. Please feel free to skip the following - It's kind of my way of venting. I suffer from bipolar disorder, depression and panic attacks. I stopped attending college because of it. And now I'm wondering if I could go back if I had him at my side to help me. I'm not some crazy person but I have a hard time just functioning in everyday situations that would seem like nothing to most of you. Going to Walmart or out to dinner with all those people or going to classes on campus, or going to the movies etc are all huge challenges for me. I've always wondered if I would do a little better if I had one of my furry compainions with me. I work at a dog shelter with a pretty highstress job and I deal with a lot of nasty, short tempered people. (we have a low cost spay/neuter program and I think some people feel the need to get defensive and nasty when they use our program because I guess they feel like we look down on them) I would have expected to have a harder time dealing with it but I do just fine at work. And I believe it's because every day, no matter what, there is a dog at my feet while I'm in my office. I plan to discuss this with my doctor sometime next month. Although, I think it would be neat to let everyone take their dogs anywhere, I worry about it being abused. Even now with me considering to ask my doctor for a 'prescription for my dog' I almost feel selfish. Like I'm trying to seem more important than others. But I guess, in the end if having him with me allows me and others to actually get through the day without a panic attack, and maybe one day even get through the day without needing a handful of prescriptions.. Then I think it's worth it..

One more note - Pets being personal property may not be a good thing. The way the laws are (at least in Virginia), if your pet is in a purse style carrier, and you have it on your arm, and someone comes up to you and intentionally hits the carrier, they have committed a battery on YOU, and you can press charges for battery. IF your puppy is on a leash, or is not "attached" to you, and they come up and kick your puppy, arguably the puppy is "personal property" and you would not recover as much. I know I feel like my Sassy is much more than personal property. She's my BABY! Anyway - I take Sassy with me in her carrier EVERYWHERE. I'm not scared, and I'm not being sneaky, I just hate to leave her alone. If there is a sign that says no dogs, I'll leave her at home, but otherwise I'm taking her until I'm told I can't!

| I would love to take my babies everywhere but unfortunately we CANT! I am not disabled and I WOULD NOT falsify my dogs to be in service just for my willing of taking my dogs with me. Think about the people that are in real needs of a service dogs. I think that if we just want to take them somewhere simply get inside the store and do like if nothing was happening. If they ask you to leave JUST LEAVE!!!!!!!!! there is people that are terribly allergic to dogs and they deserve to shop as well. I do not think that it is right to register your dog as service just because!!!!! PLease lets cool down . I woulld love to take them everywhere but we just cant make it. Imagine if you had to eat around smokers just because they want to.. would we like that?????? |

| I just have one more thought to add...some people are allergic to animals, even Yorkshire terriers. Even a dog in a carrier could cause a serious reaction, in fact I would say a hidden dog is more of a danger than one out in the open that a person might be able to avoid. If I go into a house, shop or even an outdoor area where a cat has been, I not only have allergies but asthma, I have had to be hospitalised at times. I know people who are just as allergic/asthmatic around dogs. I am not saying we banned all service dogs, however, it is unfair to say one handicap, condition or illness is more worthy of consideration than another. Asthma can be immediately life threatening, to sneak a dog into a place where a person believes there are no dogs could make someone very ill. I ask respectfully that you all consider that before taking your dog into a place where they are not allowed. |

| My opinion is this: If you truly NEED your dog for whatever reason--disability, therapy dog, etc--then by all means have them registered and take them with you. However, if there is no medical reason (other than a self diagnosed, "I'm just happier when I'm with my dogs") stating you have to be accompanied by your beloved be then for Pete's sake, get over it and leave them at home! It is very disturbing that people blatantly LIE to take advantage of a system that was put in place for the benefit of a group of people who truly require the assistance of a dog all because they can't stand to leave Fifi at home and think the they are above the rules. I wish people WERE required to show proof when asked by store owners! I bet it would put a stop to the LIARS who use that as their cover. It's no different from someone who is perfectly able bodied parking in a handicap spot when they don't need it. I don't know why stores forbid from coming in, but it's not my place to say. Rules are rules and they aren't my rules to set. Maybe it is because people are allergic or even deathly afraid of animals, or because the store owner is afraid of a mess. I know that I have seen the ER several times because of my husband's extreme allergies to cats. I would hate to think that I caused that for someone else because I just had to sneak my dog into Target with me. (And yes, I realize people are allergic to perfume and hairspray and they can't avoid that blah blah blah, please spare that lecture.) I guess no matter how many times the subject comes up, the "I don't care I'm gonna do what I want and take my dog with me anyway because the rules don't apply to me" attitude is still a shock and enough to get my blood pressure up. (Maybe I need a service dog for that...) |
