| 5 month old still hates putting harness/leash on and getting groomed My yorkie boy is nearly 5 months old and still tiny (just hitting the 3 lb mark). We still have a hard time getting his harness and leash on. I have always given him treats while we do this to make it pleasant but he still fights me and bites. Also grooming is a nightmare. He hates baths, tolerates a just bit of brushing. Professional groomers have not had anymore luck. The first one came to my house.. it was a nightmare for all of us. The next time I took him into different groomer. She said he was terrible. He bites and fights every bit of it. I am considering taking him to the vet's groomer next so that if she needs to sedate him. Not sure if this is possible or not. I want to to stay healthy and beautiful but is this just part of being a puppy? Advice please... |

| Be persistent! See if you can take him into the groomer just for a quick little brush from time to time so he gets more used to it. At home keep brushing him a little each time for just a short time with high value treats. He has to get the idea that this is going to happen regularly so he should give in. He clearly sees himself as the in charge one! Very Yorkie of him

| Thank you. I hate to see him so distressed over it all. Also, what is good tick prevention for these little ones? We live in the country and I take him on leashed walks a few times a week. We have had 3 ticks so far and as you can imagine trying to get those off are a nightmare and traumatic for all of us. |

YT 500 Club Member | When mine was 5 months old he fought harness, brushing, grooming, just about everything you need to do for a Yorkie. Took him the groomers & found out he was better for her than me. Hum... At 5 months we went into a Buddy Belt harness. He was terrible putting it on, it has a buckle not a clip, so took a little longer. It was like pulling teeth. But as time went on, I would say about a month, he now picks his leg up to put it on. So funny he now knows his right leg goes in first. Just a lot of practice and patience. I use Frontline plus for flees & ticks. Yorkies need a lot of hands on. They will learn.

| Thank you... Certainly guess I need to give him more time. This is the first I have had this young (got him at 8 weeks). |

| I'm going to use frontline plus too. I think the smallest is 5-22 pounds. I have two Yorkies that are both one year old. One is 7 lbs and one is 3.5 lbs. the vet told me to put 1/2 the dosage on the smaller one and wash it off with dawn dish soap if it makes him shaky or sick. If it doesn't make him sick she said next time I can give him the whole dose. She said it it apparently doesn't work unless it's the whole dose. I did see two options for dogs 4 lbs and 3 lbs on 1800 pet meds (one was the generic version of frontline and one was something like comfortis) so I might ask her if I should use one of those instead. |

| Good to know. I am going to call vet in am. He is on Revolution for heart worm/fleas and I thought it covered ticks but I guess not. |

| We don't live in the country, but go to the parks frequently. We use Revolution monthly but when we go hiking and out in the field at a farm I slip on a seresto collar. They are expensive and I have to cut it down for her. After the tick potential visit and I have checked her out thoroughly I take it off and put it in a zip lock bag to use for the next hike. They last a long time for us. This was my vets suggestion since we hike about 2 times a month on trails. We have not had a tick issue since using this collar in this way.

| Do you do the grooming and harness very often? You might try doing both at least 3 times a day. It is usually best to start grooming a few times daily from day one if they need it or not. The earlier the learn to accept the feel of the comb, water, etc., the easier the training will go. If your pup likes to sit on your lap that is a good time to take a good metal pet grooming comb and just run it through the hair trying not to tug or cause any discomfort. The more you handle the pup and get it used to the feel of the comb the sooner the training will kick in. The metal grooming combs tend to take tangles out without so much pulling on the hair and skin. They sell spray on conditioners that help detangle the hair and make it easier to comb between baths. Use a good sulfate free shampoo that won't dry out the skin and coat. If your dog is not already trained to accept combing and baths at home then the groomer is going to have a difficult time handling your dog when you take it out for grooming. Dogs that are difficult to handle are more likely to sustain injuries at the groomer. Training for grooming or harness is just like any obedience training. Just be gentle and consistent. You could try putting the harness on a couple of times a day too. My baby learned to love the harness because she loves to go outside for a walk. Once she learned the harness meant she was going out the only problem we had was getting her to stop wiggling quite so much because she is so happy and excited to be going out! If your harness is difficult to put on maybe you could try a step in one that slips on pretty quickly. |

| For flea and ticks I use front line plus, it has always worked for me. As far as comfortis, that is in pill form given by mouth. I have ONLY used Comfortis when one of my dogs was infested with fleas. Comfortis comes in 2 forms, one kills adult fleas, larva, baby fleas and eggs, the other DOES NOT kill baby fleas, larva and eggs, ONLY adult fleas. If you do go with the Comfortis make sure you get the one that kills in all stages. It works great, I'm just not crazy about giving flea / tick protection orally. Speak to your vet.

| When Max was biting me at five months whenever I put on his leash, we tried a trick the vet did while giving him shots. I gently tapped his head while my husband put on the harness, and Max was distracted from the harness. After a few times, he figured out the harness was actually a good thing and meant going outside. Poor guy still hates to be groomed, by me or a professional. I try to do it when I can tell he's tired, and he usually puts up less resistance.

| For ticks, I do manual checks by combing my fingers through their body (including between toes, armpits, etc). Even when I was using Advantix II, I was finding ticks on them. In fact, just last week, I found a tick at the base of Zoey's tail!!!!! Thankfully, seeing how small it was, the evil thing wasn't there too long. Topicals are not 100% proof and there are areas where ticks are becoming immune to these preventives. So I highly recommend doing manual checks EVERYWHERE at least once in a while. |

Otherwise anything I can do the limit the infestation (short of not letting him go outside) as he loves his outdoor time, which is limited, would be good. I appreciate all the info. | |
