Senior Yorkie Talker | Chloe attacked by Racoon I was shaken to the core today, after dinner I took Chloe & Abby out to pee in the backyard, it was about 5:00pm, still sunny and bright. Chloe went to walk by the outside staircase and a racoon ran out and attcked her, they rolled under the stairs, they where biting, snarling, screeching, scratching, I drove under the stairs and grabbed Chloe's hair and pulled her out, she was screeching, shaking and so terrified. I put her in my arms and ran to pick up Abby an we ran inside. I was so so scared, I was screaming and crying. My husband came running, I held Chloe while my husband looked her over, I couldn`t put her down yet she was so scared and so was I. Unbelievably there were no injuries, we checked her over from head to toe and her mouth. I just rapped her in a blankie and held her in my arms for about an hour, she is always up to date with her shots (rabbies +). She seems fine now it`s been about 3 hours now. Abby was not involved I grabbed her so fast after, I don`t think she knew what was going on. I will never ever, let them out in the backyard again without a leash on. I thought it was enough that I never let them out alone, I always go out with them, but I guess not. I took so long to calm down, things can change so fast. I love my girls so much, they are so precious to me, I would do anything to protect them. I thank heaven they are ok. |

| Did you catch the raccoon????? It is unusual for raccoons to be out during daylight hours....they usually come out after dark. You MAY have a nest of them under the.....where ever you found this animal....maybe she was protecting her babies....but lordy....... That coon could easily be sick with rabies.....I would be on the phone with the vet tomorrow and tell them what happened....and rabies shot or not, I would certainly be watching your baby very closely....and I would be trying to find that coon.... |

| Omgoodness. Irrespective of her ha ing the rabies shots I would take her to the vet also. Can you trap the coon or your town trap it to be tested? Animal control of the city or county might be interested. At least it needs to be relocated. How scary......hope you and your baby are alright.

That is incredibly scary! I have a terrible phobia of raccoons and even lurking feral cats. I am so glad that your girls are okay! I'm sure you feel like you have had years shaved off your life tonight! Prayers for you and yours, she may be somewhat sore tomorrow.

| Omg!! So sorry to hear about your Baby Chloe. Glad she is okay, and definitely have the vet check her. If you see the coon again, kill it. If you don't want to kill, look into a trap. It definitely could have rabies. |

| Gosh darn, sometimes though we take every precaution, unexpectedly frightening things happen. You obviously try to anticipate every potential danger and take steps to ensure your little ones' safety (they're blessed to be yours), but who would have thought of a raccoon attack?! God in heaven provided you a bit of a miracle, I think; because raccoons have been known to kill large hound dogs. Give both an extra smooch and a God Bless from Piper and me (oh, and have your husband give you an extra smooch from us). |

| As a lover of all animals including raccoons, I would look for other ways like trap and relocate. The raccoon was just doing what animals do and protecting itself. There's no need to kill an innocent animal especially if there are more non-lethal ways to handle it. |

| Your right yorkiemom1 they don't usually come out during the day but the last few years I have noticed them out any time of the day mostly around 4:00 pm and on. I think it has to do with how well we contain our garbage here. ( I am about an hour north of TO ) They are hunger and are looking for food. You can trap it but there will just be another one,I would think about closing in the stairs and deck so they cant hide under there that way you can look out and do a critter check then go out. I think it just got startled and felt trapped . There are things that you can buy to that keep small animals away, Costco had one in the spring, and you can get them on line I don't know if they work or not but I thought about trying one. It would get rid of other small cute animals to. I'm so sorry you had this bad scare I would be out of my mind with worry. lot of hugs to both of you. |

| I'm so sorry. This is exactly why we can't let Zeus in our backyard (or any yard for that matter where we live) to "run free." Snakes, raccoons, armadillos, deer, and owls are all prevalent where I live. It's too dangerous. At less than 4 lbs., any of these animals can attack and hurt him. The ones that are the absolute meanest we've come across are the charging armadillos. They charge at us taking our garbage to the road. If you've never seen one on its back legs charging, it's a scary sight. As far as raccoons, that is why we have to have a lock on our garbage can. They can open our lid without the lock. |

YT 1000 Club Member | Raccoon's do come out during the day. They are very aggressive and very mean. They come out at night more, but I lived in the country for many years and they do come out at other times. Raccoon's are known to carry Parvo as well as rabies. Your vet may want to give your dog a rabies booster. They did that with my cat who was attacked by another animal, possibly by another cat, but we weren't sure. He was up to date on his rabies, but the vet felt giving him a booster at that time was the best option in case the other animal had rabies. My cat had injuries though, where if no skin was broken then there is less of a threat of a dog getting anything from the raccoon. I am glad your dog is okay. Raccoon's can be mean for sure. My husky used to get a hold of them and she would take them out in the river and kill them. We would find several dead in one night if she broke off her chain. She was over 100lbs though. I would hate for one my Yorkies to meet a Raccoon. I am sure we have them in town but all I ever see around here are opossums and woodchucks. I would check with your vet depending on how long ago the rabies shot was given. I believe mine said that because my cat was over a year into a 3 year shot they wanted to give a booster, but had it been in the first year of the shot I don't think they would have given the booster. Just something to think about and all vets are different so yours might not do the same thing mine did, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

| oh my, I am so glad you were so quick thinking and that she did not get hurt. We have had a family of coons living in my oak tree on my front lawn I only would see them at dusk making their way down the tree to head to the lake for water. We tried to trap them but it never worked. I don't even know if the coons are still there since I hardly ever saw them. I only let Lola out via leash but the thought of this just sends chills down my spine because I always figured they would run if we came near them. Our trash cans thankfully are kept in the garage.
