Your right yorkiemom1 they don't usually come out during the day but the last few years I have noticed them out any time of the day mostly around 4:00 pm and on. I think it has to do with how well we contain our garbage here. ( I am about an hour north of TO ) They are hunger and are looking for food. You can trap it but there will just be another one,I would think about closing in the stairs and deck so they cant hide under there that way you can look out and do a critter check then go out.

I think it just got startled and felt trapped . There are things that you can buy to that keep small animals away, Costco had one in the spring, and you can get them on line I don't know if they work or not but I thought about trying one. It would get rid of other small cute animals to.

I'm so sorry you had this bad scare I would be out of my mind with worry. lot of hugs to both of you.
