| Tear Stains? Hi, Does anyone use or know any other way besides cleaning twice a day the hair near the eye area to keep the hair from staining? Is there some kind of product that you can use to help eliminate this problem? My poor Yorkie gets kind of stressed every time I wipe and clean this which I do twice a day morning and night. Was curious if there was something I should be using to help stop this problem. |

| I tried the Angel Eyes on a dog but it just didn't work in Tibbe's case. If the drainage is bad, have you had your baby checked for food & other type allergies? Any smell or brown discharge in the ears? I know if Tibbe gets an irritated or infected ear, his eyes will tear and drain until it is cleared up. That's how I cleared his tearing up, cleared up his ear infection that had been brewing a while.

| My girls had this problem too, until we switched to a grain-free kibble and distilled drinking water. It might be worth a try. Switching also helped clear up Lola's chronic ear infections.

YT 1000 Club Member | I don't know if I have any solution for stopping the staining, but... I find that using a Q-Tip with clear water, works MUCH better than a washrag or other cloth cleaning. I dab a little tap water on the crustation, wait just a little, then with a gentle reverse rolling and drawing the Q-Tip away from their eyes, clears the debris easily.

| My two get lots of eye boogers when we change to a food that they aren't doing well on. What are you feeding?

| Same here. Megan has had a wet face since she was a puppy but once we switched to grain free food (and then transitioned to a raw diet) and started using distilled water her face has dried up and the stains are gone. |

| I think you are asking Kim but in my case we are feeding the Nature's Variety Organic Chicken raw frozen diet...Maddie Jo can eat any of their foods but we use the Organic Chicken because of Miss Moo. I did try a bag of their Boost kibble with the freeze dried bits but Megan started itching and got tear stains again so we went back to the frozen raw and distilled water. Once in a while they get a crunchy treat but not every day...they get fruit or veggies for their snacks. The only other thing I have fed (along with the distilled water) that helped is a home cooked diet. |

| Some dogs are sensitive to certain ingredients in dog food. If you have hard water that can effect the tearing also. I have had Gracie on a grain free raw diet for quite a while and she only had a small amount of eye discharge. When I switched her to distilled water the drainage stopped totally after 2 weeks. I ran out of bottled water and could not get to the store for a couple of days and she started the tearing almost right away. It must be the mineral content in the water supply. |

| Well I feed mine Royal Cannin Yorkie junior. It is specially made for Yorkshire Terriers. I am in UK so we are a bit limited. When I first got her the breeder had her on Pedigree dry mixed with wet. She was having issues with diarrhea and vet said to only feed dry kibble and she along with several others said that the Royal Cannin was one of the best. I will admit it smells wonderful... kind of like chocolate meat ... sorry I love chocolate. I know I would never ever give it or let Tali have access to chocolate ... but I can't say the same for myself. I have been giving her just tap water and here it has a large amount of limescale in the water. So much so that if you don't descale regularly you will need to replace any appliance that uses the water mains: washing machine, dishwasher, kettle, and coffee machine. I haven't seen distilled water for sale here but then again they may call it something different that I am unaware of (sometimes confusing being American here same language but so different ). Been here 10 years and still learn a new word for things every once and a while . I will see about the water but worse case scenerio would be give her Evian if I can't find distilled. Thanks about the Q-tip trick I will definately use that. Tali's tear stain isn't crusty just wet but since she is young don't want it to stain her face. My mom had a poodle that had tear stained face and I always thought she would look so much better without it but my mom said that was just how they were and you just had to live with it. I am not good with that assessment ... I am just as stubborn as a Yorkie |

| An alternative to bottled water is this ZeroWater ZD-013 8-Cup Pitcher: Amazon.com:... Unlike other systems this one takes it down to zero and you get a tester to keep a check on the filters. I got it for less than this so you would want to shop around. It has helped with the tearing for my two. People think it is odd that we filter the dog water and the people drink out of the tap. But we have our priorities! One nice thing I did find with the tester is our house water is very low. Our little town makes their own water and they are doing a good job

| 1tsp each of milk of magnesia, corn starch, and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Mix into a paste and apply to stained area leave on overnight or at least 4we'd hours. Repeat as necessary, usually it is a 3 day process. This will lighten even sime darker grey or yellowy hair to whiter. This recipe xane from the Beers used specifically for their wonderful blond miniature schnauzers, its a long time show secret recipe. Safe on pups 8a weeks and up, be aware possible eye irritation can happen. I use. Kiss e cone from hotrodsmom to keep mixture in place. Bedding may become stained. Pleaae do not use commercial products such as angel eyes the long term side effects are negative on the dogs whole health. Using distilled water and quality dye irritant free foods even grainless will also aid.

I would check the ingredient list of your present food. I do agree it is better than what the breeder was feeding but it has a high grain content. Some dogs are sensitive to grain. Of course there are many things that have contaminated food sources over here. Even the animals that are used as food sources are injected with antibiotics, steroids and hormones, to name a few. These substances stay in the meat and people as well as animals are consuming them. Now stores are selling meats that are labeled as being "organic" but it costs twice as much. Gracie is on a food that has a meat source that is fed on grass and not injected. This lowers the fat content and there are no chemicals in the meat. Unfortunately, people and animals are suffering because of the way the food industry has tampered with our food sources. I try to feed my family and my animals as naturally as possible. It is almost always more expensive though. We all have to make our decisions about what is most important about food. Many people have no idea of how much our food sources have been changed.

I love your post! I totally agree still bothers ne organica contain less are usually cheaper to produce but rarity and fad have drastically affected price. We're over 80% organic here. I'm dramatic about it I truly beleive eating conventional or horomone medicated toxic pesticide grown injected food is poisoning people. Scary still over half the world had banned gmo foods based on facts of cause and effect and we won't even lable it!!! Abyways even soft spring water can contain light mineral deposits that cause reaction in dogs, I beleive most distilled water in Englabd is sold as nursery water for infants like here.

I think the reason for organic being more expensive is that they are not really a mass produced product like most of our foods are. To me it is more important to maintain the safety of our food sources than make more money by mass production. Last edited by gracielove; 09-21-2012 at 09:24 AM.

It really scares me to know we play around with know harmful substances especially in our foods, I'm all for scientific advance just not at the expense of lets do it not inderstand it and see what goes wrong later!!! I mean we still have kids toys with lead paint, cloths and household cloths (our pillows) that are soaked in neurotoxins, because we will burn fractions of seconds slower...the logic illudes me. I can't even get started on the addatives to medicines and supposed vitamin health substances! Scary scary scary. Personally after making an major organic concious effort, we don't get sivk as much or have as much allergy like issues here.
