I don't know if I have any solution for stopping the staining, but...

I find that using a Q-Tip with clear water, works MUCH better than a washrag or other cloth cleaning. I dab a little tap water on the crustation, wait just a little, then with a gentle reverse rolling and drawing the Q-Tip away from their eyes, clears the debris easily.
