				 | Is it bad to buy a yorkie from a newspaper ad? I am looking to buy a yorkie in El Paso, TX and I am having the hardest time finding a good breeder. There are so many ads in the newspaper for yorkies, is this a responsible way to find a pup? I would never go to a pet store and I havent found any breeders in the EP area on YT. What does everyone think of finding a yorkie through a newspaper ad? And how an I make sure these pups come from a responsible breeder?

				 | I found mine on kijiji.com. I would consider that "same difference". I made the call we emailed for about 2 to 3 weeks. I had only a picture to go by. Lots of questions and then I finally went to see her prepared to purchase. She was from an individual. Personally I don't think that's bad. Follow your heart. |

				 | I agree with Melissa, check them out, go and visit. Ask for references, vet references. See the parents and the living environment.

				 | Obtaining your dog from an classified ad is not the best way and something I wouldn't recommend. However, it's the way I obtained my first yorkie (I wasn't savvy then), but it did turn out ok. But, always remember, you buy your breeder first, then your dog. If you don't feel comfortable with your breeder, walk away, no matter how cute that puppy is. All puppies are adorable. Do your homework, go meet the breeder, check their guarantee, check out their practices.

Remember it is not always an option to see both parents. There are exceptions. At times breeders will send their females to be bred to a stud belonging to someone else. There is also the situation where a breeder obtains a pick of the litter for stud fee.

				 | I'd start with the YTCA list of breeders. You may have to drive a ways to get them but it will be worth your time. Better to get quality first. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America About The Club

				 | I got mine from a newspapper ad. Just want to say,i would'nt do it again .i did'nt know alot about getting your first puppy.when i got mine home i called for a wk. she would'nt return my call ,then one day i called her from my daughters phone ,and she picked up, I ask her a question about the puppy ,she was VERY rude.she ask me do you not have a vet ? I said YES she said that is who you need to ask . she was so sweet and nice when i was talking to her about buying the puppy ,but after i paid her and got my puppy ,everything changed. she was a.. BLANK .. and a BYB, sorry to sound mean but it's true. I would say get to know the breeder. But my baby is the sweetest ,loving thing i would'nt trade him for nothing,he's doing good .after vet care,,for ear mites, worms oh yeast in is ears to ,That is what he had when i got him from ,the .BYB. so yes a byb makes me sick. And they do run their ads in the newspaper,so be careful.

				 | Use common sense If you are using a paper to locate your breeder, it is fine. Just do not rush into a purchase. All puppies are cute and it can lead you into rescuing rather then finding your perfect match. If a breeder is legit and has the best interest for her pups she will want you to come to their home. I want to check out a perspective buyer, I want the best for my babies. If they will not show you their dogs or the dogs are dirty, the place smells not clean. Leave quickly before you get trapped. A good breeder will ask you questions also to see if you will be a good care giver for the puppy. They will also give you a health guarantee in writing, also ask for the guarantee to include the puppy to be approved by your vet... When a puppy leaves my home it is at least 12 weeks old, eating well, parasite free. A good breeder has their pups checked out by a licensed vet. I offer vet references on my babies. I do not give my own shots, worming, tail and dew claw removal. The puppy should be well socialized and outgoing. Make sure the pup is alert and not bloated. If you hang around long enough it may even have a bowel movement for you. lol Be sure there is no slime, bloody discharge or diarrhea going on. I will take calls 24/7 and a good breeder cares about the well being of their puppies. Most important find a pup you feel a connection with you are going to spend a long time together. Best Wishes to you with your puppy search... |

				 | My girlfriend got mine from an ad in the paper. She did go visit to check them out, however, and he's turning out great. She had her dog flown to her from a breeder (a Westie) and he a great dog. Ruger is 6 months and the Westie is 8. We did not see the parents, and both dogs are a lttle bigger than the norm. She got her Westie so he would fit under the seat on a plane, and that ain't gonna happen. Ruger is already 8 lbs. Might have helped to meet the parents. |

				 | I purchased my Yorkie from a ad in the paper. I got to see the parents and I love my Chi-Chi. I also found that when purchasing Yorkie's from individuals/families they are a bit cheaper than the breeders. I say do some research, ask to see the sire/dam and check out the pups. Your heart will do the rest. |

| Donating YT 30K Club Member | I bought Cali from a newspaper ad and she was very nice, the house was spotless and the parents were both there. She was not AKC registered. She was so sick the first 6 months I had her and her vet bills have been enormous as she has some ongoing health issues. She was charging more for her because she was the smallest even though she ended up a nice 5.5 lbs. Once I found YT I learned so much and don't think I would buy from an ad again. This is just my personal experience with buying from an ad.

				 | I'm sorry to hear that Patti, I must say your Cali is adorable. Although most people on this thread have purchased through a newspaper ad they wouldn't recommend it even though they purchased healthy puppies. When I picked up Chi-Chi, she had a mild ear infection, but other than that she was in great health. The vet complimented Chi-Chi's coat (which is beautiful) and her size, saying that she is a model Toy Yorkie. I'm not a advocate for newspaper ads, I'd say go the Breeder route, but it is OK to go the newspaper route if you have done the appropriate research and met the parents - I would say meeting the grandparents is a bit of a stretch. |
