| I really really need help please I really really need some help I have no idea what to do so please read this and help me. Callie has a doggy door and it was late tonight and me and my grandma both sick with some kind of cold are staying up watching tv because its miserable laying in bed due to stuffy nose and stuff, well we hadnt seen Callie for a while and I was getting worried we flicked the lights and nothing we called out the door a few times nothing so I threw my shoes on and ran out the door calling for her I finally I spotted her and something long hanging out of her mouth and of course she wasn't going to bring it to me and she finally dropped while running from me and I shoed her away from it long enough to scream for help from my grandma to hand me a flash light and I saw it a small black snake and she grabbed it and ran off and dropped it and we locked her in the house but couldnt find it and its so dark so we decided to lock her in for the night until its light out and then to have my grandpa search for it. I do not believe I saw ahead on the snake so I think she must have pulled it off or something. When we got inside we washed her face and mouth and paws and I searched everywhere and saw no wounds or bites. I know people have snakes but in my heart I know this snake came from the next door neighbor whose grass in his backyard is no joke 5 foot high. She been having problems with ticks and I really think they head over from his yard and I just know this snake came from there and I have no idea what to do. I was all brave and took care of my baby but when all was done I could not stop crying and then I got so mad soooooo mad at him and I dont get mad easily and I was shaking I was so mad which made cry more. I dont know where I can report him and Im scared its going to happen again and be worse. Please somebody help me.

| I would be upset too but most likely the snake was just a harmless garter snake. I would just watch her but she should be fine maybe she'll throw up in a bit. Mine eat bugs and leaves when they are outside....they seem to eat whatever is laying in their path. As for your neighbor is he unable to care for his yard or just too busy or lazy? Maybe if you talk to him, but if his yard is fenced unless you have CCR'S in your area there is really nothing you can do. I would look for a pet friendly bug & tick spray and spray the yard to keep his critters away from your yard. Hope you are doing better now.

| My first suggestion would be to get her on something like Frontline. We don't have a big flea and tick problem here, but all our dogs are on it anyway. I have a sticky on my wall calendar to do their Frontline and Heartgard on the first day of each month. Their are lawn treatments you can do, but those are best done by professionals, some of whom will rip you off, so shop around. Your dogs wouldn't be able to go out for a couple of days afterward, but it's ostensibly safe once it absorbs into the lawn. You may also want to discuss Lyme disease shots with your vet. My vets don't recommend them as a normal course of shots, but my dogs have never had a tick, either. It sounds like your biggest problem is your neighbor. I'd talk to him and explain that the overgrown lawn is hazardous to the surrouding properties. You have a legitimate complaint. Snakes really do live in tall grass, so he'd have no reason to say you're whacked out. I'd just be very polite with him, and if he wasn't cooperative, I'd tell him I had no choice but to go to the township. If he didn't comply within a week, I'd go to the township raising any kind of hell that wouldn't get me put in jail, but that's just me. |

| Is it a fire hazard? I hope it's not a fire hazard next door? If they go up in flame most likely your home will too. California homeowners are "suppose to abide" by fire hazard rules. Yards can't have tall grass or weeds in them. Seeing that we currently have over 800 fires in California, I don't think everyone is abiding by the laws. I've been doing my part and now I have to pay for everyone that didn't do theirs. It is impossible to even breath any fresh air outside or even inside our homes right now. We actually had to stay in doors most of the week, because of all of the unhealthy air. Our Weather Man reported that the amount of microscopic debris that is floating in our air is very unhealthy at 35 part per billions. Our air is currently registering at 167 parts per billion. It's like sucking on the tail pipe of a semi-truck. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that, if everyone keeps up with the tall grass and cleaned around their properties, Then we wouldn't have had spend the week in doors. Not to mention how ugly California will look for a very long time. I hope your baby doesn't have any reaction from biting the head off the snake (Okay, that sounded weird). I wonder if you can take the left overs to some kinda of county animal control that will tell you if it was harmful for your child to have eaten. Best of luck and I will be keeping tract of how you and your child are doing.

| Not to sound uncaring or unfeeling, but if your neighbor wants to keep his grass tall, that is his perogative. Not to say that is right, but it is his property. Unless you have a homeowners association that has rules that govern how you should keep your lawn or anything around your house, then you really can't tell him how to keep his property. Now that being said, if you can talk with him, then maybe you can come to some kind of compromise. Since he does not have a fence, then maybe you can see if he will let you cut the grass which is most close to your property line to keep the critters at bay. Good luck.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Well...I don't know what you can do about your neighbor - but regarding the doggie door - I personally wouldn't use one with a yorkie - you're pretty lucky she only found a snake and not something bigger or I should say something bigger didn't find HER. They're so little I feel if let outside - someone needs to be right there watching....We had a doggie door when we had cockers (back when I met my husband (RIP)... but once we got Chanel, our 1st yorkie - the doggie door had to go. I never would have felt safe with it... you def need to treat your yard though - having ticks on her is dangerous |

| A few years ago the guy next door moved out and let his yard go. I called the city code enforcer (at town hall) and they put a notice up after about a week with nothing done they came in and cut it down. and billed the guy. our law here states that is the grass is above 12 inches tall they can and will come in and mow it down at the owners expense. Most cities have this law or one like it. I would call your city hall and ask. Not only can snakes come from that but many other not so friendly critters. |

| I have to agree with V on this one. She may be 13 lbs., but that's still just a "snack" to a lot of predators including people who just want to be mean or maybe get upset because...a neighbor complains about their yard? I've also seem reports in our area of teenagers taking "practice" hunting shots at dogs and cats, etc... I could go on and on. I would not let her outside without supervision. I am so glad she's okay, and that would terrify me too!

I Love My Babies Donating Member | I have found that if you are calm and try to be helpful. most people will listen to what you have to say. When you go talk to your neighbor... ask if he has noticed any snakes around. Tell him that you just found one in your back yard and wanted him to know about it... so he could keep a look out for them. Show concern that you don't want him to be bitten either. Tell him how concerned you are about your puppies or children getting bitten by a poisonous snake. Tell him that you now how busy he has been, working on his trucks and then ask him if he needs any help in getting his grass cut down.

As you said, most townships and cities have a regulation about this. Ours was six inches last I heard. I've also heard about people who violated it. You DO NOT want these people having to come over to mow your lawn, and you'll wish you'd done it yourself. Between what they charge you and the fine they add to it, you could hire a neighbor kid to do it for an entire season. And they won't hesitate to put a lien on your property if you don't pay the bill | |
