Lots of good luck! You can do it!
I got a harness for her and it was too big but I ordered one of the "Puppia" ones today online?? I got that retractable lead to use too when the harness comes!! I don't have a fenced in yard so I am trying to get her as "confined" as I can and easy access to get her outside quick!!lol Taking her out every 1/2 hour or however often I need to is not a problem but she won't always do anything out there and then when she comes in she goes on the floor!! Do you all advise to leave her in the crate all night and not take her out? I might try that tonight because last night I took her out 3x in the middle of the night and she still peed and pooped on the towel in the front of her cage between sometime between 4am and 6am?? I worry about her "eating it"!!UGH!! Isn't there something to stop that?? She doesn't do it all the time but she has started doing that just this past week??? She eats her food real good. I leave her food down all the time too and that might be why she can't hold it at night?? I don't know?? I don't want her not to have enough to eat and go too long at night without food?? I feel so dumb about all this and I can't believe a 2lb. dog has me so whipped!!LOL
She was raised in a house and she wasn't in a cage there but the lady said that "she slept in a crate at night but she was with her mother so she was good!! The breeder is the one that sold me the wire crate that I have so I figure it is what she needs to be in?? I also have the plastic one and have tried that too but I think at night she is better in the wire one so she can have room to go potty if she really has to and not lay in it??? Is that wrong to do??? I put a towel in the front part folded and a little bed in the back part??
THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE!!!!! We'll make it!!LOL

We are in the same boat. My husband even gets up at 2:00 am to take Kayla out and she is still not house broke. I have done the pads, diapers etc. everything you can think of and she goes outside, comes back in, looks up at you and tee tees. I think she thinks its my job to clean up after her. The little pee pee pads don't work for her because paper is her favorite thing to tear up. I think they are all different and have different issues and all we can do is have patience and go to the garage and scream to let out some stress. lol!!!!

I definately feel your pain, OMG what a struggle I had with Cody!!!! However, he is 7 months old now and is just about fully potty trained. I say just about because he will hold it forever but when he cant hold it anymore he will go anywhere. For whatever reason, he does not let me know if he has to go. If I ask "Cody, do you have to go potty?" He goes berserk which lets me know he is ready to go, if I ask and he doesnt budge, then he doesnt have to potty. But overall, his accidents are few and far in between. I started him with crate training which worked for the most part, but consistency is the trick, that and a whole lot of patience!!! Good Luck!!

I totally agree and do not agree with the pee pad, basically you are teaching them it is ok to go inside. I had no trouble teaching Rambeau to go outside. It takes consistency and patience and time. Always use the same door, the same routine, do it often and bring them to the same spot so the smell entices them to go. Do not clean up poop all of the time always leave some. This will become their routine and their brain will trigger. Rambeau is like a robot, if I had to collect pee or poop I would have no problem. It is true as they get older their ability to hold it is better. The muscles of the sphincters become stronger, the bladder larger and more resilient. If they mess in their kennel or the floor just clean it up. If you catch them just repeat the routine you have been practicing. I have never used a command. I do ask if he has to pee and he gives me that cute little yorkie cock of the head.

What do I do when she EATS her poop??? I can't leave it down if she is going to EAT IT??? What am I doing wrong?? I take her out constantly....sometimes she goes sometimes she doesn't but I still take her outside every 30-45 minutes and put her in her xpen and either stand there and say "go potty" ... "good girl" etc etc ... or sometimes I leave her out there in her xpen for 5-10 minutes and watch her out the window to see if she goes?? Do you all use a harness or collar on a leash?? Do you leave it on or take it off every time she comes in?? I ordered a "Puppia harness" but I don't have it yet. Is there something I am doing wrong?? What is the best to do at night?? I have let her sleep with me but now she doesn't want to sleep she wants to play so I have put her in her crate for the past week and I get up in the middle of the night and take her out but she still pees and poops in the front of the crate on a towel and sleeps in the back of it on a little pillow bed?? She screams and cries in it though.....I leave a radio and night light on in the room and cover the back of the crate with a sheet??? I think she is getting a little bit better actually in there but still just screams!!lol She HATES any type of confinement!! She even screams in her xpen until a car goes by or someone walks down the street and takes her attention!!lol I hope I am doing the right things with her?? She puts everything in her mouth she can outside and inside both.....I watch her constantly with that too!!lol I don't care if she ever is a "trick dog" or anything close....I just want to love her and have her go potty outside and sleep at night!!lol
THANKS to all of you for trying to help me!!

I think age is a huge factor. My boxer was trained at week 19 just like my private trainer said he would be. Now the two little ones. Well Gabi is almost 2 and still has the occassional poop accident. UP until 4 months ago she would not poop outside. I think camping really helped her because I was aware of everythin she was doing. It's kind of funny because she knows how to tell me her brothers want to come in, she knows how to tell me she wants to go out and play but refuses to tell me when she has to potty. The oddest thing.

Be patient......It will happen...

Wink won't pee or poo outside (sometimes)

The same with poop smear a little bit (very little) and he should be drawn to go back. Keep the pads in the same area. Praise him with treats when he goes on the pad (animal cookies) from PETCO work good. It's going to take awhile it took mine at least a good month. TIP: flush the poop in the tiolet so your house won't smell. And buy some spray to put on the areas that he is not to do potty on so he won't go back to those spots. Good Luck. I know how you feel. The first night i brought Toto home i put him in my bed to sleep and i felt this wetness in the middle of the night he pooped and peed on my comforter the bad part it got between my toes somehow i took him to the kitchen practically crying because i felt that potty training was going to be difficult, now he only pees and poops on the pad. But he won't go on the pad unless its clean now. So now its the opposite. He doesn't like dirty pads. The training pads are cheaper to buy at Walmart 50 pads for $12 dollars and their a good size. Everywhere else is so expensive. Good Luck.

Missy is crate trained and we have no problem with. She enjoys her cage and sometimes goes there to eat her treats. We've put potty pads right in front of the door she uses to go outside. For the most part she goes outside and we do give her treats, but the rest of the time she pees or poos in the house. There have been times when the potty pad is about 2 feet from her and she'll pee on the floor. We love Missy and don't want to sell her but we can't afford for her to ruin the house. HELP

Default Having trouble even getting her to use papers

Hi, I just got my puppy; she is 10 weeks old. I've only had her 3 days, but can already see training her is going to be hard.

Her breeder had the 4 puppies in a pack n play where she had newspapers on one end. This seemed to work while they were in the pen. She also had newspaper by a door when the puppies were out. It's my understanding they had pretty free run of the house.

I tried to emulate the situation and got a pack n play rather than a crate. I put a little tray with newspaper on it at the other end of the play. Emma will use that paper when she's in her pen and wakes up from a nap. She will NOT use the paper I have out for her when she is up and running around the house. She knows where her food and water is (kind of a large house) but seems oblivious to the papers. The breeder said she was doing really well on the papers at her house. Perhaps it's just that she's new here, but she is going wherever she wants.

I even put pee from her paper in the pen on her other paper, but it doesn't seem to entice her. I tried pee pads but she just seemed confused and chewed on them, so I figured I'd use paper because she was used to it.

I am wanting to use the little tray with papers, somewhat like a litter box and keep that situation for her due to where I live, etc.

Any suggestions??? I'm not crazy yet, but my partner might be soon.

PS this is my first time here, so thank you for any help you can offer; I did read the other posts in this thread, but they seem to relate more to taking her outside, which I will not be doing.

Thanks!

You might want to start a new thread; this thread is three years old. I tried using a tray, with a pee pad on it, and he seemed to think of it more like a bed, I know lots of people use this sort of thing. I found washable potty pads work for me. This is a very good link that tells you step, by step, what to do, it also allows you to choose between various methods, and takes you to a page with further instructions on that method. Many people have found these training methods successful. Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today! By the way welcome to Yorkietalk and introduce yourself in the General Forum.

Sad Piddles, Poodles and Fleas!!!

Hi everyone, I'm very new to this site. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right!!! But, Thanks for having me!!
I have a 5 year Yorkie named Darby. I just got her in July. She was doing good in the begining with going out to go potty. I don't know what happened. I never see her go in the house, but I find little poopies once in awhile. I never find wet spots. I know she has to be going somewhere. She does not like cold or rain, so I want to train her to go on pads. What do you recommend? I've tried moving the pads to where she has been, but she won't use them. I've tried putting them in a crate. Dosen;t work ! What can I do?
Also, I use flea treatment on her, but she has fleas, and now a rash. I gave her a flea bath but I think that gave her the rash. What can I do about that?

Hi DoJo welcome to Yorkietalk, you are lucky to be 100% with pee training, poop training does have special difficulties, when using a pad. I found that most Yorkies don't like too poop and pee in the same place. and having two or three pads helps. Joey likes to poop in out of the way places, and I place a couple of pads in "hidden" areas, and he will be more likely to use them, he's about 90 percent. Sometimes it's close to the pad. I think those people who have regular dogs that go about 5 minutes after eating have it a little easier, and they either take him for or walk or tether the dog to them and set out several pads ensuring that the dog uses one, and then is rewarded. You also might try using a poop pad that is a different material than the pee pads, and I found that placing the poop on the pad helps him understand. '

I can't help you with the flea problem, and I are suggest you start a new thread, in the general forum and describe the problems your having, many people just read the first post in a thead, and don't respond to the other posts, again welcome to Yorkietalk. Here's a link to the general forum.

Hello, I have a 11 month old boy and I also got him from a pet store. I tracked down the breeder and talked to her. Anyway, I started training him to a litter pan, with no litter though, just a wee wee pad in it. This way it gives him a designated space for potty. He trained very quickly to it. He has had some regression episodes but still uses it faithfully. In the beginning I used a Housebreaking Aid spray that you can get at any pet store, just spray a couple sprays on the wee wee pad and it attracts them to go there. FYI-this spray can also be used outside to help train. I do put his potty in his crate with him when we are gone, when we come home I take it out and put it in next to his crate. When I first brought him home though, I kept the potty in the living room and worked with him on it when I was home. I would put him in it every time he had an accident and say "potty" over and over. And also, every 1/2 hour or so put him in it and say potty. He caught on very quickly. I got a medium sized pan so I can cut the wee wee pads 23" by 23" in half. And I order them from PetEdge 100 at a time and they last for a long long time. I would try this. It has been great for Emilio. Also, we live in MI so it was nice since when I got him in Feb. there was snow on the ground. I hope this helps you!!

Sad Suggestion and request for help

To anyone who uses wee wee pads on a regular. You can actually get 300 medical pads which basically work the same way for about $30.00. You will just need the spray to spray on them, but even buying these pads and the spray is much cheaper than buying the wee wee dog pads from walmart or anywhere else. Also, for $15.oo we brought him a plastic reusable dog litter box to put the pads in, cause he liked urinating on the wedges which also got on the floor. This is another great idea for those who like to use the edge of the pads.

I need a little help in understanding is it normal for a yorkie pup to urinate and poo in different areas. He has been urinating on the pads 95-98% of the time, but only pooed on it once. Is there something we can do about this or is this normal?
