| Can a very young puppy be housetrained? My pup is only 9 weeks old. She will sometimes pee on the pad (with me standing there) and I will praise her. But, if she is in her pen at night (6 foot long with bed on one side crate on other), she will poo on the pad but not pee on it. It seems like she will avoid the pad more and more. I think she is much too young to go outside in the cold, so it has to be potty pads. But, I think she avoids them now. I've never yelled or anything, but I can't get her to pee on one. I get her up in the morning, put her on the pad and gently tell her to pee pee, she will run off and I put her back on, but she will not pee. I do this all day long, but she will not pee. I'm thinking during the day if she does not pee I can put her in her crate if she does not pee, wait a while then put her back on the pad again, if she still refuses to pee then put her back in the crate? I feel like I'm being mean, but my carpet can't take much more (good thing we didn't put the new floors in yet). Does this sound like an ok plan?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Actually a good Yorkie mom begins the house breaking, she can smell the urine in the bladder and pushes her pup over to the pad. I wouldn't worry about training to go outside at this point, most Yorkie pups are with their mom's at this age. I would wait till she's 12 weeks before I start to crate train her and in the meantime I'd use more pee pads on the floor of her x-pen, basically most of the floor should be covered with pee pads so she can't make a mistake. You never want them to get use to their own urine, so change the dirty pads and pick up poop as soon as you notice it. I think this thread has some helpful tips. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ebreaking.html

| We got our new little guy 4 weeks ago- at 9 weeks old- We started the housebreaking right away- we had just put down our 14.5 year old baby- He's pretty good- I was against the pads- but we did get a small 'Tinkle Turf'-for when the weather is bad-he's not even 3 pounds- I started walking him as soon as the Vet gave the OK- so I try and let him see how the 'big boys' do it- So far-not bad...couple of accidents at first, but now he knows he has the Turf option is he can't hold it- they do need to go out about every hour tho- his little bladder is the size of a pea!

| Teddy, up until about six months, had a strong aversion to peeing on his pad if there was poo on it at the same time. Due to this, I had to be EXTRA vigilant in making sure his pad was clean and I also made him go on the pad when there was poo on it so that he understood that it wouldn't bit him..lol He, of course, got a ton of treats and praise and he doesn't seem to have a problem with going now even if he's poo'd in the night when, obviously, I am asleep so can't clean it up for him. I know that my mom's Yorkie is very adverse to using a pad once it has been used, too. Maybe that is the problem? |

| The muscle in a dog's body that controls the flow of urine does not mature until the pup is at least 4 months old. At six weeks of age the pup has no ability to control urine. It may learn where you want it to urinate but that does not mean that it can make it to that place in time. I don't understand why anyone would have a 6 week old Yorkie pup. A pup that age is still learning to eat real food. When people take home such a young puppy they have to be aware that a 6 to 12 week old pup is an infant and has no ability to do the things that most people want it to. You are going to have to deal with pee on the floor and crying because the pup wants it's mom and litter mates and very well should be there with them. You are now both the mom and the play pal. You have to be everything to that baby until it is old enough to start learning. At 12 weeks of age most pups that have been socialized properly and have grown according to expected rates are ready to start venturing out into the world. That is an estimate though. Every pup is an individual and should be evaluated by an experienced breeder before it is allowed to go to a new home. You have several weeks of being a mom to that baby before you can expect much relief. |

| I got my Maggie at 7 weeks (the legal age you can get a pup here in VA). From the day she came home, she pottied outside in a small area. She used potty pads at the breeders but never seemed interested in them once she got here. I tried to offer the pads and she didn't have anything to do with them and would go to the door to go out. I stay home so I was able to take her out every hour, or as needed. I also got up every 2 hours with her at night to take her out when she would whine. She is crate trained so is in her crate while we are gone or at night. I just blocked off most of the crate so she only had a place to lay down. She has only pottied in her crate once or twice. And, now at 10 months old, she goes to the door and whines to go out. I was told that Yorkies are hard to house train but she's been pretty easy since I stayed on top of it and made sure she had plenty of chances to go out and potty. Good luck with your new little one! |

| You may want to try putting in the puppy pad into a puppy pad holder or a small somewhat-shallow box just in case the pee leaks or spills out. Perhaps you could try slightly rubbing an old puppy pad onto a new puppy pad, to get some of the scent on it? Maybe she would pee then?

| Yay! I would definitely take her lead with that then! I got Maggie in Feb and it was cold and within a week we had snow on the ground. I thought for sure she would backtrack but she loved the snow. I just made sure she didn't stay out in it for long and dried her off as soon as we came inside. I also tried to keep a place in the yard free from as much snow as I could for her to potty in. It was just a small little circle but it worked since she was so small herself at that time (she's 10 lbs now!). |

I weighed her today and she is charting to be less than 3 1/2lbs, I sure hope she grows bigger than that! I would love to have a bigger small dog like my Ole Girl was, she was a perfect size at around 11lbs!
