| New Puppy Frustrations Hi Everyone. I just joined not too long ago and everyone has been so nice and encouraging!! I need some of that support now. Henry is just about 12 weeks old and we have had him for 2 weeks. He is a joy but a LOT more work than my husband and I imagined. I am going to take Henry to obedience school but not until the end of August when he has had all his shots. For the most part, he is a good puppy and doesn't do a lot of the bad things I hear others complain about. However, the energy I spend with him is starting to drain me. Not to mention the stress it is causing between my husband and me. I just need some encouragement that it does ge better, right?? Because he is in his crate all day while I am at work and at night while he is sleeping, I don't want to have to put him in there anymore than he has too so I just play with him in the evenings. I take him outside for potty, take him for walks, and try to find various other ways to hold his attention. He likes bully sticks and will chew on them, but like anything else, his attention isn't held long. Does this get better because right now Henry consumes 100% of my thoughts and energy and my emotions are going crazy!! I love him but sometimes the effort and strain on our household doesn't seem worth it... :-( |

| I think you have to be aware that having a puppy is like having a toddler in your home. They are very labour intensive until they're older and know all the rules of your home. It won't be a short period of time until he's totally trained, but when you are done it will have all been worth it. We've had Ozzy since June 27 and he's making progress, but I know it'll be at least a few more months before I'm comfortable letting him out of my sight AT ALL in the house. But we will still be taking him outside lots for potty times and play times. It's a commitment to include the little guy in our family. We let him sleep with us on the bed. He loves it and he doesn't make a peep all night. He even likes to sleep in on the weekends |

| Kongs are really great toys, when Chibi was a baby I would put a treat in one and he would play with it for hours. Also if possible you could get a neighbor or a friend to play with him during the day I'm sure it would help, especailly now its summer maybe some kid you know wouldnt mind puppy sitting?,.

| When I got my first Yorkie I thought I would go crazy also. She was my first puppy in 15 years, my Cairns before her lived to be 14. The potty training was the hardest, after 6 weeks we got her a male Yorkie friend and this helped a lot, it was just as easy potty training 2. I had them sapyed/ neutered, no puppies. I know everyone can't do this, but it does get better. I now have 4 and it isn't too much harder just lots more love for me.

| I know how upsetting it is to have them in a crate all day and all night. Have you considered an expen? It fives then more room, but they are still confined. You could use it while your home and have to cook, or do something where you can't have all your focus on him. Just a thougt. You're right, it does get better! At this point he hasn't learned all the house rules. If you keep doing what you're doing, he'll eventually get it.

| It does get better, but it takes work to get there. Puppies take a lot of time. Puppies seem to have endless amounts of energy to burn. You are putting a very young puppy in a small space for very, very long periods of time, this will only make things worse. The first thing I would do is find a way to break up the time in the crate. Can you switch to an ex-pen? Could you hire a sitter to come in the middle of the day and give the puppy a chance to get out and run around and also have some mental stimulation? Also make sure your puppy has a lot of different kinds of toys to play with- my puppies always loved the petstages toys (you can find them at most pet stores)- they have all different noises and textures to keep your puppy guessing. Also it is never too early to start some small training sessions at home. Mental stimulation goes a long way towards a more content/ less bored pup. You can train simple things like sit and down and do a few puppy push ups (sit/ down/ sit/ down) each night. I do agree that it is usually safer to have pups in a contained area at night like an expen. However, sleeping in bed does nothing to "wreck the power".

Donating YT 30K Club Member | It does get better and you will be so happy you stuck with him. I have 4 right now and have had yorkies since 1970 and none of mine have had a high energy level after they grew out of the puppy stage. I agree that an ex pen would be a better option for when you are gone. Does he sleep in your room at night? If not maybe moving his crate or ex pen in there might help calm him a little. I can remember my first yorkie, Karma, the first night was a night mare. I said I wanted to take him back but my sister (we shared a room) said she would help take care of him and we got through the rough beginning. No mater how many times I bring a new one home I am a little nervous. I hope it works out for you.

| Oh my goodness. I remember day two of having Gizmo I basically was crying to my co-worker who had a puppy asking if it got better, and praying on my way home on my lunch hour that Gizmo was a good boy and didn't go potty in his crate... I agree with the other posts, try an expen. That'll give him a little more exercise so he's not soooo wound up when you guys get home. Kongs are good, Giz doesn't like them too much, but he does love love love bully sticks. So, I know the chewing does wear them out. It does get better, trust us. We all know what your going through. The best thing I can say is try to be positive, dogs sense when you're stressed which causes them stress too. Just like when I would get home on my lunch and I thought Gizmo went potty in his crate, it was inevitable that he did go in his crate like a self fulfilling prophecy. Goo luck and keep us posted! It'll get better! And that little furry face is totally worth it!

| I have Noah and Allie in an expen and I love it. They have lots of room and can play, sleep, have a pee pad and still see out, but not get in the way when I need to do something or can't focus 100% on them.

| LOL...... Oh do I remember those good old days when my guys were little pups But like with a new baby there are stresses that come with it there should be NO reason that you are taking this burden on to where it is draining you Are the it hers in your family helping you? And thee shouldn't be streess between you and your husband Puppies do not have good long term attention....and yorkies in general are easily distracted Let me give it to you straight .... Your pup is going to want your attention .... Always As he gets older you'll just have a shadow that follows you around everywhere It's just something that you'll get used to As far as now with a new pup He needs his own little space.... Don't make the mistake of giving a new pup free reign of the house .... It's upsetting to the household and is too much stimulus for the pup Keep him in one room for now in listening distance to you and slowly as he gets the lay of the land you increase the distance he's allowed to be in It does get better but try to see this as a gift not a negative Believe me you're going to miss the time when he was a puppy when he gets older ....enjoy him

| It will get better - hang in there!! Your pup is looking to you for everything right now and is basically a toddler that only thinks of his needs. I have a dog sitter come by everyday for a mid-day visit with my little gremlins. The mid-day play time seems to really help. It gets them out of their puppy area and they are super excited to have to have a visitor. These guys are a lot of work but they are worth it. The best time attention task for my puppies has been the Kong. When I get home from work, after the attack of the puppy kisses, I get their little kongs and put some wellness jerky in them and then top it off with a piece of biscuit to secure the jerky (I kind of push the first piece I put in to the bottom to make it a little more challenging) and then let them have at it. They love the jerky time. Will usually distract them for about 30 minutes. Not a long time, but enough for me to get a few things done. Instead of crate training mine, I decided to give them a puppy area. They have the master bathroom for their space. I have crate in their area but do not shut the door. They have a little play space with some toys and soft beds, but their also have their cave when they want it. I saw a treat ball at petsmart that you fill with some treats and then they dogs play with it until the treats fall out. Something like that might entertain your guy for a little while. Good luck and hang in there. Just remember that this is all new to Henry too. He has to learn to live in a new place and a lot of rules. He will depend on you for everything in his little life - no, not just your time and energy. You will feed him, walk him, love him, play with him (not always as much - he will calm down in time), and make sure he is safe and healthy. In return, he will love you unconditionally and always. He will always be happy when you come home. Your walks together will be the highlight of his day. He will give you so much love in his own little way - just give him some time. |

| i feel your pain. Morgan is going to be 14 weeks old on Sunday and he does take alot of work not to mention getting up twice a night to take him to go potty. Right now I am concentrating on potty training. I know in the long run it will be worth it. I work shift work and my hubby is retired so he is home with morgan while I am working. I have a puppy playpen but am going to have to get one that he can't chew// I have a soft sided one but he is such a chewer. Hang in there |
