Oh my goodness. I remember day two of having Gizmo I basically was crying to my co-worker who had a puppy asking if it got better, and praying on my way home on my lunch hour that Gizmo was a good boy and didn't go potty in his crate...
I agree with the other posts, try an expen. That'll give him a little more exercise so he's not soooo wound up when you guys get home. Kongs are good, Giz doesn't like them too much, but he does love love love bully sticks. So, I know the chewing does wear them out.
It does get better, trust us. We all know what your going through. The best thing I can say is try to be positive, dogs sense when you're stressed which causes them stress too. Just like when I would get home on my lunch and I thought Gizmo went potty in his crate, it was inevitable that he did go in his crate like a self fulfilling prophecy.
