| Peeing on Purpose! I am at my wit's end with this dog! Bailey caught on to using the potty pads very soon after I brought her home. She had a couple accidents here and there, but mostly great. I'm a teacher, and I bought her in April when I had 5 weeks off to train her. Then when I went back to work my mom was coming over during the day to babysit her for a few hours a day. Then summer vacation. She was great over summer. Well trained and behaved. But then I went back to work. My mom can no longer come over every day, and Bailey is alone for about 8-9 hours a day, except weekends. I know it's a long time, but I try to leave her a lot of interactive toys and things and she's always seemed fine. Except that since I went back to work she seems to be completely acting out. She's peeing all over. I've gone through way more Nature's Miracle in the last 2 months than I ever did when she was a puppy! I know she's got to be doing it on purpose because she's going more often than she needs to and she's turning in circles while she goes to make as big a mess as possible! I usually just tell her NO and put her in her playpen for a few minutes. She does still go on her pads most of the time, but the "accidents" are driving me crazy! I just got home from work 20 minutes ago, almost immediately she went on the carpet. A few minutes after I let her out of "jail" she did it again! She's almost 9 months and I would have thought by now I could let her have run of the house while I'm gone, but I have to keep her in the kitchen. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? I seriously entertain the idea of rehoming her sometimes. I don't think I ever would/could, but I'm SO frustrated! I really want to get her outdoor trained, but I don't know if that's feasible when I'm not home most of the day.

| PLEASE help! She just peed again. This must be the first time ever she's gone 3 times on the carpet in less than an hour! I mean she can hold it all night, even 9-10 hours, I KNOW she doesn't have to go this often and is just tryting to "show me" for leaving her alone. I want to transition her to go outside, but when I do take her outside she just runs around and eats things she shouldn't (dirt, weeds, leaves, etc.) and doesn't go! I don't have grass in my backyard but I have seen her go in the ground cover once before.

| Thanks for the reply. I've thought about that but I don't think that's it. She is not usually going that frequently. Today was totally unusual. She may go on the carpet every couple days, or some days possibly twice, but today's definitely the first time she's gone 3 times in an hour, all on the carpet. She never goes that much even on her pad. And it doesn't smell much if at all.

| I know what you are going through, and I don't think he's doing it on purpose...My solution may not be an option, for you, but I'm going to tell you what worked for me...I was getting nowhere w/Apple and the housebreaking, and going totally insane about it all...The miracle stuff doesn't really work, because there's always the "temptation" smell there...It only takes a micropscopic drop of urine for them to smell the "place", and you can't get it out of the carpet padding...I think the longer you are potty training, the more the temptation is there, because there are more and more pees there...I finally got fed up, had the carpet taken out and had really cheap laminate floor put down...I didn't go nuts, when she had an accident, and I took her out regularly....Within two weeks she was housebroken!!!! Honestly, I think it's the carpet that makes them go...Now I do have to admit, I come home, after about 6 or 7 hrs. and let her out...I work 10 minutes from here, and get 1/2 hr. for lunch...They think I'm nuts, at work, because I rush home, wiz my dog, and rush back, but hey, she's housebroken!!!! She's almost a year old and weighs 5 lbs., so after her first birthday, I'm going to hold my breath, not come home, and see if she can make it 8 1/2 hrs....Good luck, and I hope you can do what I did..... |

| It usually takes longer to get them 100% potty trained when we work or are not home 24/7 where you can really focus on the training and not allow them to have accidents. She was used to being able to go out when your mother was coming over, now she is alone for a long period of time and probably isn't used to holding it. Most dogs (and people) can hold it longer when they are sleeping, just because you aren't moving around. Please don't think she is "doing it on purpose" Dogs are not spiteful, as much as we might want to think that at times especially when it comes to potty. But she is not just trying to "show you". If she is going a lot more than normal, you should really rule out any medical reason before anything. Also, at 9 months, probably not a good idea to have her run of the house when you are gone. Can you gate her off in a kitchen, or tiled room, with an expen, or crate and pads?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | She's had a big change in her life, and she doesn't know how to deal with it. Yorkies seem to need human contact more than any other dog I've owned. I can't imagine Joey being alone that much. Many people choose a Yorkie because they want a dog that enjoys human companionship. Some Yorkies get use to being left alone for long periods, but it seems like those who have another dog for companionship do best. I don't think punishing for accidents is the way to go. She could be peeing because of the excitement of seeing you, and punishing her will make this worse. I believe in praising the success and ignoring the accidents. I know this is frustrating for you and if you can't find a solution such as day care or another pet, perhaps rehoming is the kindest option. Try to put yourself in her shoes, you've been home all summer with her and now you are gone for 9 hours a day, and she has no idea why. A couple of other thoughts, her "jail" may seem more like her home, and the carpet could seem more like outside. Also, I was wondering if she's been spayed, and if her hormones are contributing to her problem. I do know that she senses your anxiety and frustration, and this isn't good for her, she is trying to tell you that something's wrong, but I don't think she's trying to punish you. Remember too, they can hold it longer overnight then they can in the daytime. Urine production slows down at night.

You should have her checked out at the vet. Very dilute urine?. Not to alarm you, but when you say 3 times in an hour, that can be excessive. Is she drinking excessively? It is always best to take them to the vet first when potty habits change that much all of a sudden. Rule out a problem, then focus on the training

I have wondered if it could have to do with her not being spayed. I plan to get her spayed soon, but I was hoping to find a cheaper estimate than my vet gave me.

| Maybe you could get her a cat to keep her company. My Zeke loves cats, and I think he would rather have a cat companion than a dog. You could get one from a Humane Society that is older and likes dogs. I don't think a kitten would be good, since you are not home. It might also be good to get one that has already been declawed. |

| I agree dogs and carpet... they just can't resist. Maybe she is so excited when you get home she can't hold it? Also some dogs do it when they are nervious? I would check with the vet to be sure.... also remember she still very much has "puppy brain" I know it can be frustrating but it won't last forever! Keep consistant, get her checked by the vet, and have a good snuggle! Let us know how it goes! |

Also, her accidents are not right when I come home so I don't think it's nervousness or excitement. I eventually want to replace my carpet with hard wood, but my house is brand new (so of course the carpet WAS too) and I'm single, paying my mortgage and bills on my own, so I won't manage that for a while. I know carpet is an issue when you're using pee pads because they're similar. Bailey definitely had the idea that carpet wasn't okay in the past. Rugs were a different matter and I had to take those out a while ago because they'd also be too tempting to her. I'm also not sure it's an issue with her going back to where a smell was, because she's all over the place. She doesn't keep going in the same spot(s). I think I just need to get her going outside, but I just don't even know how to begin, especially when taking her outside is an ordeal and she'll eat things she shouldn't have and then won't come inside when I want her to. Plus she'll stay out there for a long time and just not go.
