| This is off the thread topic at the moment...but if AKC is the best-of-the-best what does CKC mean? How is it different. are the standards lower?

There is the legitimate Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), which is similar to the American Kennel Club, but for Canada, and another registry, started in the U.S., called the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) for breeders who aren't eligible for the AKC. Its primary use, I believe, is to mislead consumers. Any breeder can register any dog with the CKC so the "papers" aren't worth the ink they are printed on.

I am not attacking AKC, I think they are a good registry but just think their fees are a little high. I haven't registered a litter with them in about 8 years but I have see others paperwork. $25 + $2 per pup = $35 for a litter of 5 and that don't include a pedigree. I do know of at least one other excellent registry besides AKC and you can get a litter registered with Pedigree for about 1/2. Sorry, but I am not the breeder in question. I just wanted to give my opinion here.

| Yes and it was the same last year when I registered Cookie's litter. I don't know where she's finding her prices. |

| I just called the AKC to find out how much it would be to reg. Legacy and Impreza. It cost $25.00 for the litter application and an addtional $2.00 for each puppy. So I'm paying $29.00 for the both of them and the litter application. THEN, after that it cost $20.00 for each puppy you have. For example: You buy a puppy from a breeder. The breeder pays the 25.00 plus 2.00 for each puppy they have in their litter. After they get the paperwork and you buy the puppy from them, you have to pay 20.00 for the puppy to be registered under your name. I know I probably repeated what others have said, but I figure I would just put it all in one post to clear up anything. |

| Akc 99% of the breeders leave AKC because AKC they never had to be concerned about a knock on the door to oversee what they are doing....the extra costs, for the most part only effect a high volume breeder...the breeders effected by the economy will be the commerical breeder...the hobby breeder can cut back and only breed when they want..or not at all for awhile...a commerical breeder who supplies pet shops can not maintain 100, 200, 300 dogs and not breed them... |

| I agree that their are alot of good breeders who have dogs registered with other registries. I happen to buy my dogs on looks and size....not necessarily their pedigree... sometimes even champion backgrounds get lost with each generation... the registry is an afterthought. I have some AKC dogs but that's not why I purchased them. If you are happy with your yorkie and it's healthy that is all that really matters, isn't it??? OK, what was the original question?????..... Probaby the breeder didn't want to pay the AKC fees... her/his choice. .... and your pup and future pups by her cannot be AKC registered.

Yes, there are many people who choose to use the lesser respected registries because they have something to hide or because they have AKC sanctions against them, but that doesnt neccessarily apply to EVERYONE who opts to breed outside of AKC. It's not fair or accurate to automatically assume that someone is using an alternate registry because they have done something wrong or because they have lost their AKC rights. (ETA: I just realized how old this thread was....I'm not sure how I ended up on it...) Last edited by BamaFan121s; 05-18-2008 at 07:12 PM.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The main problem I have with the CKC is that a person could buy a puppy from a great AKC breeder who has spent years developing the line and only sells AKC limited registration, meaning the puppies should not be bred. The person could go ahead and breed the dog, and while it wouldn't be eligible for AKC the CKC would gladly register it. This happens all the time, and I think it's the same as stealing. A good breeders line is very valuable asset, and if someone wants breeding rights they should pay for them, however, many can't get breeding rights from a good breeder at any price, so they go about it this way. I wouldn't want anything to do with a registry that would register just any dog.

Generally speaking, there ARE lots of people who take advantage of the situation and do this, but that doesn't include EVERYONE--kind of unfair that those who ARE honest get grouped into the same stereotypical bunch.
