Collards and Blackeyed peas

How many people ate their collards and blackeyed peas yesterday. I think the tradition started to help people start out the new year with a "good cleaning" . I know I am certainly starting the New Year out that way.

I sincerely hope and pray that 2009 is the best year ever for my YT family. I pray that everyone's life is filled with joy and love, lots of Yorkie kisses, and that this year is profitable for everyone!

I've had one black eyed pea in my life and that was one too many. Why eat something that will make you sick if the "good luck"part of it doesn't work anyway?

I DID, I DID.
Even put okra in my black eyed peas. Have done this all of my life and never got sick from a pea. Have had a great life also.

So tell us how you make yours... try and make it sound appetizing, ok? I love trying different things... I just have to make it down south at least once in my life and try all these things I've been hearing about.

You are a sissy from MN. You can come visit me anytime, have been cooking southern food for many years. Must say that I love the food in MN too, wild rice soup was one of my favorites.
If I can't get fresh peas, buy frozen and cook them with ham hocks or salt pork, "bet you don't know what that is?". My step son was born and raised in MN and he still can't eat the collard greens. His Father is from MN, and now he loves his wife's greens, black eyed peas and okra.

Now, a bowl of cheese grits I can eat anyday, if they're made right, or regular grits, well, the yankee comes out in me then, I still like the sugar and milk in the plain ones

I am trying to remember, pot likker is the juice from the greens that we dipped cornbread in??? If so, that is the only way that I would eat it.
as a little girl and LOVED IT. Long story short, my sisters Father raised me and he was a cook in the Marine Corp for 40 years and I do recall sow's belly. What is called today?

We southern girls love grits with butter and cheese but my Northern friends have to have surgery and milk.
