Collards and Blackeyed peas

Being from a Southern family , but born and raised up North has really messed up my Southern taste buds. From the time I can remember going to visit our family down South...I remember being very hungry for "regular food" and eating a crap load of cornbread because it was the only thing I liked on that big ol' Southern dinning table ! Beans and cornbread were my only salvation I still don't know half of what Grandmother serves , but I ain't eatin it I'm the lovingly referred to Turncoat

I skipped it this year. So let the bad luck commence. But in our family we only did Black Eyes (no collards), I guess we omit the collards cuz we're from Texas and thats not completely the south, but more southwest.... who knows. LOL... I put some nice Pig Grease in my Black Eyes, makes em yummy. (Bacon Grease).

I never had grits until I stayed at my BF's grandmother's house in Ohio. Not a fan.

I'd be curious to find out where the tradition started of eating collards and black eyed peas on new years. I've heard of it many times. Wikipedia, anyone? I bet we can find it somewhere.

Absolutely!

Nonnie's "PDS" Cornbread
2 c. Martha White Self-Rising Corn Meal
1 T. Baking Powder
1/2 Stick Land O Lakes Butter
2 Eggs beaten
1/3 c. Sour Cream
1/4 c. Minced Onion
1/4 c. Finely Chopped Jalapinos [de-seeded]
Skim Milk

Mix cornmeal and baking powder. Add the onion and jalapino and mix until coated with cornmeal/baking powder. In a seperate bowl whip melted butter, eggs, sour cream and about 1/2 c. skim milk. Add this to the dry mix and mix well. It will be a very stiff mixture. Add skim milk a little at the time until it's a little thinner but not runny [it will actually look "fluffy"]. I bake mine in a casserole [about 8"x8" - larger if you want a thinner cornbread ... we like it thicker] that is heavily greased with butter flavor Crisco. Bake @450 degrees for about 30 minutes or until browned on top.

Hope I have this right ... this is the first time I have ever written it down! I use what my Mother called the "pinch, dab & smidgen" cooking method! Please let me know if you try it and how it turns out?

Well, I actually don't mind blackeyed peas at all....after all, we ARE in the south and they are so common here Not to mention my mom always made them for us, and of course on New Years. However, I myself never go out and buy them just for New Years (well, I hardly buy them at all to tell ya the truth ) BUT....my mother was freaking out because I didn't have any BLACKEYED PEAS! So....would you believe that she brought her one and only can of them over here and made my hubby and I eat some? LOL. I was in tears laughing so hard when she showed up at my door with a can of BLACKEYED PEAS!!

Anyway, we did have them....so hopefully I'll be REALLY lucky in 2009 and either get pregnant, or win the lottery Those darn peas haven't brought me either one so far, though

UMMMM, sounds good. I will have to try the Martha White brand, used the Dixie Lilly and didn't care for it. Have you ever added sharp cheddar cheese? It is really good in a cast iron skillet but got rid of mine, why????

I haven't tried cheese but it sounds wonderful!! I will definitely try it. My Mother always made her cornbread in an iron skillet and it gave it a scrumptious taste! I love trying variations to different foods. I'm really bad about trying new recipes [making them up as I go] and if it happens to be really delicious, I forget exactly what I put in it!!

We don't believe in "luck", so we don't have any real set in stone traditions or superstitions that we do for the New Year. However, all this cornbread talk is making me hungry! I don't like plain dry corn bread though. I either take equal parts corn bread mix and a yellow cake mix and combine them (mmmmmmm soooooo good!) or do a savory one with cheese and peppers, sort of a mexican flair to it. I used to hate cornbread as a child, but I think that was because I just never had any good cornbread!
