| New member with LOTS of questions! Hello, I just found this site and have lots of Yorkie questions and this looks like a great place to start! Hope someone can help me out! A friend recently offered me a precious little female Yorkie pup {5-wks old and weaned} that is full-blooded but without papers which are of no concern since it is free and I don't plan to breed. I have never had a Yorkie and know nothing about their temperment so that is of concern to me. Also am wondering how it would get along with our other dog, a 7-yr old female Springer Spaniel with a wonderful temperment, but very protective of me. I also have a 30-yr old Amazon parrot who is bonded solely to me, but I am good about never letting my pets see or hear me loving or praising them and each have a seperate "mom time" so no one gets jealous. Our other dog {the Springer} is crated in the kitchen at night so I am wondering if I would need to buy a smaller one for the Yorkie and if this is recommended? Also, how difficult are they to potty train? I am sure we would have to make several adjustments but really want to give this a try! Any tips or info would be helpful and greatly appreciated! Thanks! | Well first off, welcome to YT! Yorkies are a wonderful breed, who are very loving and fun spirited. A pleasure to have, and how lucky of you to find one for FREE!! When would you be getting the pup? 5 weeks is very young, and they actually suggest not adopting a yorkie until they are 12 weeks old due to the small size of the breed. This is also because many of the genetic problems in some yorkies cannot be detected until this age. ANyhow, back to your questions. Yorkies can be difficult to potty train, and it does take a lot of commitment and consistency. And, even after your yorkie is potty trained, you will likely still have accidents. You might have problems trying to seperate time between pets as yorkies love to be with you all of the time. They are very people oriented and just love being near their person. However, overall a yorkie is a wonderful companion, and in my opinion if any dog can make you melt it would be a yorkie. They just have a way with their little kisses and their sweet little faces. Good luck! |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | when are you getting the puppy? 5 weeks is very young. potty training is difficult. many people if they are very persistant can get it done by around 7 or 8 months. some pets take longer. their temperment is wonderful. they are very loving caring dogs. they constantly want to be with you. (it is ok if you work they can be home during the day) you should use a crate small enough for her to stand up turn around and lie down in. most won't potty in thier sleeping space, as long as it isn't too big. she should get along fine with your springer. my yorkie bonded perfectly with my choc. lab mix and he is 7 too. in fact right now they are rolling around on the floor. i hope that helps!! good luck, new babies are a lot of fun!!!!! WELCOME TO YT!!!!!!

| Wow, that's amazing that she's offering it to you for free, but I would not take it until at least 8 weeks. I took my puppy at 6 weeks and have no regrets, but I think 8 weeks is the ideal age to leave their mom. I'm glad you're not planning on breeding. Very admirable. I'm sure the new puppy will do fine with your animals. I have a Yorkie, a Golden/Chesapeake X, a rabbit, and 3 ferrets and my Yorkie plays with and gets along with all of them, no problem. Crate training is probably the best method you can use to housetrain a Yorkie. Although...I'm not the one to ask about that...lol Good luck! YT is the best place to come when you have questions. Enjoy!

| 8 weeks is not when they should leave the litter, 10 is minimal 12 is better, not for genetic concerns, because sometimes those won't show up for months, but for proper socialization with litter mates. Early removal can lead to many behavior issues down the road. Biting and separation anxiety are the two problems that almost always manifest in pups removed from the litter too soon. Try to convince this breeder to keep the pups together to at least 10 weeks. Send her here if she needs more info on why this is so important. Yorks usually do well in multiple pet households if the introductions are done with care and patience. |

| Lucky you! To be offered a free yorkie is amazing. Too young to take right now though and they can be hard to potty train but if you have another dog I think it's easier for them to learn. Welcome aboard!

| take the yorkie! i have to agree with the others that 5 weeks is very young! they are so small at this age. there is a risk of hypoglycemia in small breed puppies, so you really have to be careful and know what to look for and make sure the puppy is eating. i would ask your friend if you could wait until at least 8 weeks and make sure the pup has its shots. yorkies and other breeds usually get along well. i have two pugs and my yorkie (who is the king of the castle around here) loves them and "tolerates" them! it's all about early socialization. anyway, congrats and good luck with your new family member!

| I don't think you should have any problems with the Yorkie getting along with your other pets. We have an Australian Shepherd puppy that's almost 3 months old, 2 kittens that are about that age too and Tatum (the Yorkie) is about 1.5 years old. She took to all the new critters really well. The Australian Shepherd is now getting taller than her and Tatum still thinks she's the boss. They play so well together. Tatum also started out around cats because we were living with my mother-in-law while building our house and I thought she was going to start thinking she was a cat too! I have to share a couple of my favorite pics with one of her original cat buddies (His name is Bud):

| I just recently got my first yorkie, Harley, and had concerns about him and my 2 year old mini schnauzer (who is very spoiled and protective). We got Harley when he was 8 weeks, he's now 12 weeks, and he and Sydney are getting along great. They play REALLY rough sometimes, but both seem to enjoy it. ______________ Diane and Harley |

| Hi and welcome to YT! I think 5 weeks is really young, too. I got my Roxy at 8 weeks and I still wish I would have waited another 4... Better safe than sorry! Roxy is 3 months old and gets along very well with our 2 year old Scottie and our 4 year old Australian Shepherd, as well as our 1 year old cat. As long as they're introduced slowly with supervision, you shouldn't have any problems. I found it helped when I introduced them to do it individually and say in a quiet, soothing voice "Look, (name of older dog), it's a baby! Pretty baby! Gentle, gentle," etc. My Aussie is so gentle with Roxy that she'll just lay down and nudge her with her nose! It's adorable. |

| I also feel your concern should be with the age of this little pup and not so much about the other animals ( and yet I don't know much about how birds react) I think 12 wks is a perfect time or longer if you are talking about a smaller than average puppy. The time with their littermates is so important to make them good with other dogs later in life. Yorkies litter sometimes are only one but even with that the case, the mother is teaching that little one every day and they need time. Has your friend been breeding quite awhile?? You can always call a vet but the info you get on this site is wonderful. I'm new to it and I am just amazed!! Joan and Crystal I hope I live long enough to become the person my dog thinks I am. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! You are so smart and are to be commended for coming here to ask questions before deciding to take the puppy even though it is free, it is not the initial price of the dog that matters and it seems that you are more than aware of this. Do you work or go to school or can you be with the puppy 24/7? Yorkie puppies need 24/7 care until at least 12 weeks of age in my opinion and 16 weeks would be better. Consider this when deciding when to take the puppy. I would recommend 12-16 weeks is best because it is past the point of real concern about the weaning and not eating well and the potential for hypoglycemia although that fear never goes away completely. At 12 weeks they still should only be crated for short periods of time because their bladders are not fully formed and functional to allow them to "hold it" until 6 months at a minimum. They also crave human contact and it would not be fair to deprive such a social breed of the human companionship they desire although your other dog would be great company. I have three yorkies in my house now and a westie and a standard poodle as well as a cat so they are never bored, but I am self employed so my schedule allows me to be home a lot. Anyway, welcome again, and I hope you work it all out and get her so we can read your stories! Good luck! |
