Confused Where are the stickies??

Ok now when you go to the general area, the sick and injured, and the breeders section there are stickies for people new to read. So I am looking to show at some point and wanted to begin the learning process but there are no stickies!!
So what does a newbie do?
Ask the experienced exhibitors of course.
Could link the threads for us new people .... or are there any?
Grooming/topknots
Puppy training
Stacking
Leads
Best products for coats, travel, tables, covers, bows, etc...all of them
All products needed (types also listed..such as brushes..what kinds and sizes)
Baits that work
Lead types that are needed
Extras that make show life easier
Books to read
Videos that are helpful

PS Admin...could you sticky these here??

I have signed up for a conformation that start in Sept. Is this for me or the puppy or both? What do I need? What to expect?
Thanks again

This information would come from your mentor, showing is not anything you sould look for in a book.

I do not have a mentor. So I figured I would try to get some courses here to begin with and then go to the classes. The lady that does the classes has shown and comes with lots of recommendations.
Just was wondering why there are no stickies here in the showing section when there are in the other ones....
Guess I will go through them page by page looking for the topics...

Okay, I'll make a sticky, it will say, "Interested in breeding, find a mentor." To the OP, many of your questions have been answered in various threads, a sticky that would cover all that information would be huge.

Mary, I know that you and a few other advise on mentoring but not everyone has a mentor readily available . There are many tips on showing, how dog shows work, selecting a mentor, selecting a show prospect, caring for a show coat, etc. that would be so beneficial to those that are considering getting into showing. I think it would be beneficial to everyone if we did have a few stickies on the basic information.

There's no formal way to make a sticky, if someone writes an informative thread, and people think it's useful, someone might PM admin to make a sticky on it. Now that we have a library, the same thing is happening there. I have read threads that suggested best reading material, and someone could request really great threads like that be placed in the library. There a a few stickies in the grooming section, that could answer some of your questions. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yorkie-grooming-talk/

The reason there are no stickies is because this information should be obtained from your mentor. If you obtained your show prospect from a breeder, said breeder should be your mentor.

Each mentor makes their decision to mentor a person based on different criteria.

I would only provide such information to someone that I'm mentoring. Mentoring is a big responsibility.

Obtaining a mentor requires a lot of effort. This is one of the things that mentors look for in a newbie. If they have the drive and desire to do right by the breed.

I didn't have a mentor when I first started....but, a lot of research on my own on how one goes about it. Attending shows is the best way to finding a mentor, joining breed clubs. Contacting officers of breed clubs. The information is out there.....you just have to do the work.

Like you said, you did not have a mentor in the beginning. In all my years of being involved in showing I was never told by anyone to get a mentor. Mentoring is something I just started reading about here on YT from a handful of people. While I think it is an excellent idea, not everyone that shows started out with a mentor. There is a lot of research that needs to be done before you even select a mentor because not all mentors are equal. I have learned a lot on YT from many of the show breeders, many who are no longer posting. Show breeders should not be afraid to share basic information, it is very educational.

Thank you.
I am not trying to cut corners, but I also am making the effort to find the information. Mentors do not fall out of the sky and I need to get some knowledge prior to that step. There is a show here in Sept that I plan on attending. I have a few names of exhibitors from my state be it they are about 2 hours away. I have contacted one person who did give me some names and will go from there. One of the names is a person who is in the next town, and being from this area I have seen some of her dogs and read some reviews on her breeding practices and from that would not have her mentor me in anything for sure.
But I was posting about this here thinking that some of the experienced people might know where certain threads are. Just as there are for people looking for a puppy. How to find a good breeder. Cpr for dogs, etc. I just feel that there should be stickies to help find some of the basic info and some reviews of the gotta haves and dont waste your money ones too.

No I didn't but, I knew what to do to find one. I researched.

However, if one doesn't have the where with all to attend dog shows to find such a mentor, saying they are not close to dog shows, speaks volumes to me. They won't put the effort into dog showing.

I agree not everyone started out with a mentor, however, they quickly found out that without one they weren't going to get anywhere.

I will say that there is information on how to obtain a mentor....what to look for. There's plenty of articles in the Yorkie Magazines on what to look for. What I will say is that we are looking for good people to mentor, but there are few newbies that really have the qualities that will do the best for the breed. Remember mentors look into newbies heart.

First of all it is not that I do not have the "where with all to attend dog shows" it is that I have a disability that limits my driving and walking. I want to do the prep work and hand my dog over to a handler ringside. I have attended shows years ago but have not been in some years due to raising human kids and working full time. I have have the time and want to put the "effort" into it. I just am not able to get to the shows and mentors that are hours away, it has nothing to do with my not putting in the effort.
I have done some homework and I need to do alot more. That was why I came to this section and began looking. I just wanted to know why no stickies with some general information to start out. I just did not realize that that question would lead to that?? guess I should not be surprised...

I understand where you're coming from and your situation. However, understand the information you are requesting is not handed over lightly and made available to just anyone. It was entrusted to exhibitors by those that came before us. We have to know who we're handing over the reigns to.

Basic information is out there.

I agree that is would be nice to have a sticky for just the basic guidelines for someone interested in showing. Like Mary said, the first place to start would be to go to shows. If you are serious about learning about showing then my recommendation is that you take your time, study the Yorkshire Terrier standard, go to shows and meet some show breeders. You really need a good understanding of what a quality yorkie should look like. There are many different 'looks' in the show ring, all may fall within the standard but everyone has their own preference as to what they like in a yorkie. As for the different products to use for show dogs, there are so many and everyone has their favorites. What works for one dog might not work for another.

I will say that I am mentoring a couple of people right now. One doesn't have my breeding but, approached me via a PM. We met and we've been working together for about a year. She's entered her boy in her's and his first dog show this weekend. I'll be attending with her to show her the ins and outs and groom her boy.
