| Baby Teeth Extraction! Help!!! Spike saw his vet the other week who noticed that his adult teeth are coming in where his baby teeth have not yet fallen out. Apparently this can cause problems, so he referred me to another vet who specializes in dentistry. The doggy dentist said that he needs 6 - 8 baby teeth extracted fairly soon, and that hopefully that will allow his adult teeth to grow in properly. If the teeth are not extracted, then his adult teeth will not grow in properly, which will probably lead to some serious dental problems in the future. The plan is to get these teeth taken out while he is in for his neuter surgery. The vet called again today with his quote for the surgery - $1400 - $1800 (CDN)!!! OMG!!! Apparently it is because they are estimating that it will take about 1 1/4 to do all the work, as well as the neuter, so he will be under anesthetic for quite a while. Has anyone had a similar experience? He is booked in for his surgery June 5, since I figure I might as well bite the bullet now (no pun intended), and do my best to prevent any future dental disasters! |

| some can retain their baby canines the big teeth there are only 4 of them but more than that seems to many to me to be pulled the baby teeth do not have roots in the gums they come out with a strong yank with little bleeding should be abouot $12-$25 for sedation about $10 per tooth and about $$100 for neuter american so that all seems to much and i would look elsewhere

| It is common in yorkies and other toy breeds for them to have retained baby teeth. It is a very simple and fast procedure. Scampers had 3 baby teeth extracted and the cost came to $200 which included the anesthetic, full blood panel, and IV and medication. It would have cost a little less but he had some complications and they have to give him an IV and monitor him really close. But everything went great. He was back to himself the next day. I don't know how much $1400-$1800 is in American dollars but it does seem really high.

| that is outrageous!!!!! I really don't see how that ads up.... Have you seen his teeth do they look like they are coming croocked? I'm no expert but that doesn't sounds honest. I was going to neuter Marley and they wanted to take 4 baby teeth and they were going to charge me $350 because they do blood work and each tooth $25...well long story short I changed my mind and chicken out.... Marley is 1year and 2 months old and he just lost the last two I'm not suggesting not to do it, but maybe get a second opinion would be good idea Let us know how it goes Good luck!! |

| That is outrageous! My Yorkie was neutered and had 21 baby teeth extracted and my vet is not cheap, none are in my area. It was no where near your bill. Topi also had a blood panel before the surgery. Jessica |

| The vet quote - a breakdown! They just faxed me the 'estimate' (honestly, it's like getting a car repaired!). All is in CDN dollars. Surgical IV Fluids: $20.85 Medication/Sedation: $13.75 Sterilization Anesthetic: $51.15 Canine Neuter: $73.65 Surgical Materials/Pack Fee: $47.50 Surgical Pain Medication: $16.72 General Anesthetic Additional 15 mins.: $230.50 Dental Survey Films: $179.85 Timed Oral Surgery: $558 Local Anesthesia: $124.20 Dental Pack Materials: $25.50 Post Anesthetic Care: $34.40 Prescibed Medications: $60 I do like this vet, he is very nice, so I'm not sure that he is trying to gouge me. He came very highly recommended, too. It does seem that they are trying to budget for everything that might or will be needed, which I do appreciate. I'd rather be told all the potential costs up front than be surprised by a bunch of extras at the end. Any thoughts???? |

| I still don't see how that adds up and a lot of it seems redundant to me......Does this includes blood work? I'm sure he is probably a prestigious vet, but you can get that done with a great vet without spending that much. |

| The 'second opinion'... Since everyone I've spoken to told me to get a second opinion, I have done just that. I faxed to vet's estimate to another vet, who quoted me $850 (CDN). That's $600 less! Apparently, the first guy charges more because he considers it to be 'oral surgery' instead of extraction, he planned to take 8 xrays, and he is considered a 'dental specialist' who uses more state of the art equipment. I figured that even if I take Spike to the new vet, and they end up needing to do more than they estimated, it will still be cheaper! The moral of this story -when faced with a large, non-urgent vet bill, GET A SECOND OPINION! I will let you all know how the surgery goes - poor little guy goes in on Tuesday! |

| Good luck ! My two furbabies are going in tomorrow for neuturing and teeth extractions for a lot let then that ( Can ) so I am glad that you got a second opinion and quote . I have an awesome vet ( here in Northern BC )that has a puppy plan so the neuturing and tattooing are included in that price and the teeth extractions are about $10 each ...... I own the vet this week anyways as we just had our cocker in for 4 days of antibiotic IV as she is having liver problems ....... What we do for our furbabies ! |

| Teddy had his baby teeth extracted when he was neutered and everything together came out to be about $400 and my vet is usually slightly more expensive than others in my area. The vet recommended we do it at the same time so he only had to undergo anesthesia one time. That included all pre-op testing suregery, etc. |

| Wow! that sounds rather pricey to me. My Peppy had 14 teeth extracted and I believe his bill was $200ish. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I just noticed Jazzy is getting another set of teeth. Should I take him to the Vet or wait and see if they fall out? He is 7 months old. My vet has been out for knee surgery but should be back anyday now. Any suggestioned would be great.

| I experienced the same with my little Furgi...she had 9 baby teeth removed. The price that they gave you does seem a little bit steep. I assume that they are including the price of the neuter as well. Furgi had already been spayed at 5 months and didn't have her baby teeth pulled until she was about 9 months. The vet and I decided to wait until her adult teeth did start to come thru because she was losing teeth every month until 8 months. At 9 months she had 9 baby teeth pulled and I also chose to have a cleaning done (Yorkies and their terrible teeth). The entire procedure ran about $400.00. Check around a bit. You shouldn't need to see a specialist for this, I went to a vet that had 3 staff members trained in dentistry but not specializing in only this. Also, my grandmothers yorkie had 3 baby teeth pulled at the time of her spaying and was charged $32.50 per baby tooth removed. I would suggest finding a vet that is experienced with small breeds of dogs and am betting they have someone on their staff trained in dentistry. |
