Clock The 'second opinion'...

Since everyone I've spoken to told me to get a second opinion, I have done just that. I faxed to vet's estimate to another vet, who quoted me $850 (CDN). That's $600 less! Apparently, the first guy charges more because he considers it to be 'oral surgery' instead of extraction, he planned to take 8 xrays, and he is considered a 'dental specialist' who uses more state of the art equipment. I figured that even if I take Spike to the new vet, and they end up needing to do more than they estimated, it will still be cheaper!

The moral of this story -when faced with a large, non-urgent vet bill, GET A SECOND OPINION! I will let you all know how the surgery goes - poor little guy goes in on Tuesday!
