| I gave my pup the Lepto shot because my property backs up to some woods. I have walked up on racoons, opposums, fox, bobcats and armadillos. I know they urinate and defecate in my back yard. Well, they did. I built a fence, but the opposums can still get in. I felt getting the shot was in the best interest of my pup. Others need to realize that the disease is not just spread by rodents. My puppy always has his nose to the ground and the disease is also spread through mucosal surfaces. Leptospira organisms have been found in cattle, pigs, horses, dogs, rodents, and wild animals. Infected through contact with water, food, or soil containing urine from these infected animals. This may happen by swallowing contaminated food or water or through skin contact, especially with mucosal surfaces, such as the eyes or nose, or with broken skin. |

| I asked a Cornell vet since this is so serious. The risk to a pet Yorkie to be infected by lepto is very remote. True, the lepto can be found in many animals, but the primary ones that infect our dogs are rats, cattle and pigs. Dogs who live on farms are more prone, not dogs who live near wooded areas. The bacteria must be passed by the dog eating contaminated food or ingesting water an animal has urined in..he said it is highly unlikely a dog can get ill by sniffing the ground.... He said he has not seen a lepto infected dog in dozens of years, but he treated many lepto reactions until he stopped the vaccine. BUT he also said each pet owner must weigh the risks and do what gives thempeace of mind. If you allow the vet to give leptop at least go to a vet who knows the risks and the pup should stay with the vet for several hours after the vaccine is given..and meds can be given before the shot to lessen the chance of a reaction. Best wishes. |

| Thanks Kimberly! That was a wonderful and informative sight! I will not let my vet give her the Lepto shot again---I will look uop my papers and see if she had it or not. And I will insist on the 3 year vacation time. I know he will fight me, but we must stand uop for our pets, who else , if not us? Such a informative and helpful forum So glad I found this sight! ROMEO'S MOMMY!!! Is he okay today? I certainly hope so! Let us know what is going on. Give him a hug from all of us! Pat |

You do not need to have your pup neutered by 5 months, but one of the advantages to having him done early, if he is large enough is that he may never learn to lift his leg. Also, although I know it is too late, with toy dogs, I never give the boosters with the rabies. That is just too much on their little systems. I wait about 3 weeks after the last boosters to get the rabies done.

I live in an area that is loadd with coons and possums and I do not get the lepto in with my dogs shots. My vet didn't even try to do it because they know how it can affect some of the toy dogs.

| Just saw this, too. I hope Romeo was ok. Roxy did the same thing with her second set of shots, they gave her Stronqid-T and she had a reaction to that. So they gave her a shot of Diphenhydramine and a shot of Dexamethasone and kept her a couple hours. She was fine after that. Her last 2 sets of shots they gave her the shot of Dex. first and she had no reactions. This vet told me that the only dogs that have reactions are dachunds and that she had no idea why a yorkie would. I asked a question about docking and she said she was pretty sure yorkies were born with short tails. Where did she get her degree: I have to make an appointment to have Roxy spayed as she just turned 6 mos. so I found a different vet to take her to. I spoke to them and they have spayed and treated many yorkies. I had heard many stories about the 1st vet preferring to put pets down rather than trying to save them. I won't ever go back there.

| OUr Cupie can't have anymore rabies or distemper shots because of this reaction. The vet said once more might kill her. Her face swelled, vomited, scratched, cried, had a fever. We put her on bennadryl for a week and it finally got better. My vet wrote a letter stating that she can't have anymore and I sent it to our animal control department for our county. They said they will keep it on file and to not worry. I carry a copy with us on vacation too. We tried giving the shots at different days and it was just as bad. Maybe your baby is allergic to them.

| My animals get a rabies shot once every three years only, and the older ones not at all. I lost my 14 year old Beagle, Cinnamon Twist, CD four years ago; she reacted badly to a rabies shot and died three weeks to the day. At the time, two different vets were involved, but later we found the shot was the cause. Note: if your dog reacts to any shot, let the veterinarian know immediately, of course, but also, contact the company. They want to know of problems, and will often cover all medical expenses for the dog. |
