| Glad to hear he is home and didn't have to stay at the vet overnight. Keep and eye on him for a couple of day, he did have an ordeal. Animal control is doing rabies check around here. Unforunately animal control in my county do not allow exemptions. One of my friend got checked and had to give her liver compromised border terrier a rabie shot or else they would take him away. My friend did everything to try to convience them that it was life threatening to the the dog. Animal control wouldn't listen. The poor dog was at the vets for 2 days on I-V after the shot. But he recovered. |

| OMG!! That is just horrible! I guess it depends on what area of the country you live in and whether there have been recent rabies incidents. Hope you live in a lenient county. |

| I am so sorry for Romeo & for you! I know it will be a long night for you, your husband and for Romeo - but hopefully he will be resting well. It sure has raised lots of questions I will be asking my vet! (Where in OK are you?) |

| Is there someone who will check on him during the night at the vet's office? What other medical help are they giving him for this? |

| At this point I'd call another vet right now and get a second opinion---before the office closes this afternoon. I'd HATE to leave him there if they aren't actively treating him during the night. If they aren't, why can't he come home? |

| Your vet is wrong about needing LEPTO//rodents carry it in the urine...does he come into contact with rats or mice...any good toy vet knows..NO lepto is needed now, it is dangerous. Get a new vet...and neuter him at 6 or 7 months...plus 12 weeks is too young for a rabies. And to think we pay these vets to try and killl our babies. |

| I am so sorry to hear about your baby....I could just imagine how you must feel, because I have'nt even had Nemo Rabies done yet, but he will be going in on the 18th of Apr to be fixed and I was told that he would have to have his rabies, and some other shot, before they would do the operation, and it just made me nervous, but I will be asking a lot of questions, now that I have read your post, it will be very informative for other yorkie, and small breed owners on this site who are not familiar with side effects that some of this shots could have on their dogs....I was told by a friend whose husband is a vet that it is not necessary to have all the vaccinations that your vet claims your dog need, and she said definitely not as often, and informed me about the Lepto shot when I first got him, and how dangerous it could be..... I think I am going to go call to talk to the Vet that will be doing Nemo's surgery, so I can find out what type of anesthesia they will be using..... Hope you baby gets better!! Gale |

| Oh my Gosh! I feel so bad for you! I will pray that everything comes out okay! I didn't think he looked good in the pic. But, I didn't want to worry you! How does he know if it was the lepto or the Rabies? Just wondering! God be with you! Pat |

| I am so sorry to hear about your baby! I hope he gets better very soon. I would never have know about the posible reactions for shots like rabies, and this lepto one. It looks as though my baby had gotten the lepto before we even had her. How often do they give that, should I worry that it will be in her next round? And if it is dangerous why do thy give it, my baby is never outside, and as far as i know isnt around any mice/rats. I do think this is a very good thread. I am sorry you and your little one had to go through this, but it could save a lot of others from the same problem.

| I wouldnt pay the bill, any good vet knows (toy breeds)Yorkshire Terriers have very bad reaction to Leptospirosis besides its an extremely rare disease most areas in the country believe is no longer exist. The Lepto vaccine is the most common shot known to cause potentially serious reactions such as hives, facial swelling, and even life-threatening vaccination reactions much more than any of the other. read this http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache...hl=en&ie=UTF-8

| I'm confused, is Lepto a vaccination all by itself or is it part of the rabies vaccination??? My Lucy needs to go in a few weeks for more shots and I want to be clear about this before I take her. Thanks!

| Lepto is found in some combo shots and vets that are not knowlegable on toy breeds will give unknowningly that combo. When I sell a puppy it is clearly marked DO NOT USE LEPTO on all my health care pages and included in the adoption contract. Yorkies should receive : Parvovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza, distemper 3 times over a 3-4 week span (usually not given before 6 weeks) (3) initial puppy shots, rabies at 6 months, provide a puppy booster one year later, and every three years thereafter.

Make sure when you get their vaccinations that you request that Lepto be LEFT OUT! And I agree on the 'three year' or more rule for boosters.. Most universities have accepted this as the new protocol for vaccinations....

| I am so sorry I hope all goes well, I started to cry and had chills when I read you story.(So I can't even imagin what your going though) I took Tommy to the vet the next day after I had gotten him to get a shot, I told Maggie I would take care of it well there are 2 vets in that office and he said bring him back in a month for his last puppy shot and on the rabies shot to wait till he was older he said to bring him back in may for that he would be around 7 months then. But when I took him back the other vet was there and gave him both last puppy and the rabies shot at the same time I told him what the other vet said and he said he would be fine he was almost 5 months at this time. he was only 2.9 lbs. so I was so scared. I will not go back when that one vet is there even though nothing happened to him,but i just didn't like how he took care of him.
