| romeo's mom, There is no way to know if your dog will have a reaction to the shots or not until he he has it. Good thing you caught it in time. Call the vet at 12 before you go. I know you want to take him home as soon as possible but he may have to spend a night at the vet. You may think about going out and getting some children benedryl and keeping it on hand for when he comes home. I don't know how much to give a 2.2lb puppy. Does anyone know? I neutered my pup at 8 months old. I wanted to wait until his adult teeth were out and have retaining baby teeth removed while he was being neutered. | My breeder said that after they have all there puppy shots that she recommends them not getting there booster shots until every three years, besides the rabies of course but she said that we are over vaccinating our pets and we are just making more problems. Has anyone else heard of this? She said that vet's wont agree with this because this is where there money is made, but she strongly urged me to do the three year thing.

be sure and find a vet that uses gas ONLY not anestesia these little guys can't handle it. There is no good reason for your puppy to be put under twice, so best to have it all done at once. Oh my please change your vet find someone that is very knowledgable treating toy breeds. good luck to you

| The vets stopped giving my Scruffy rabies vaccines several years before he died due to his kidney failure. I seriously doubt the "rabies police" are going to come after anyone whose dog is allergic to the shot. Its not like our tiny Yorkies are going to be around wild animals anyway. IMO its better to chance "breaking the law" than another bad reaction. |

| We are over vaccinating our dogs. The vaccination can last up to 3 years. However, it is required by law to give rabies to your dog annually. I'm not sure this is true or not because I keep forgetting to ask my vet but I believe all the dogs get the same amount of vaccination. That means that my yorkies get the same dosage as a great danes. |

| Yes... I just did an internet search with Google. I typed in "Canine immunization dangers" and pages and pages of articles came up talking abput how the rabies vaccine is not necessary and how vaccines in general are bad for dogs. Here are three links to articles I found interesting: www.wholisticanimal.com/petvaccinations.html http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe,co...c.htm#recovery http://www.naturalrearing.com/ARTICL...ABIESSCAM.html It's really scary! As for the neutering, I agree with eensor's advice. Surgery and the anesthesia is a really scary thing for these little guys. 5 months is way too young for such a tiny dog and the Isoflouene is the anesthesia to use. I would probably change vets in light of the things this vet has already done "wrong". Keep us updated. I know it is no consolation to you, but your problem has allowed all of us to learn more about an important health issue for our babies. We are all thinking of you and Romeo. |

| I would call the good yorkie breeders you know in your area or talk to a yorkie rescue group or a meet up group. It really takes interviewing the veteranarin on the telephone about their experience and ask them about what they know about the common health concerns for yorkies and about anesthesia, vaccinations, and all those things. Even ask to meet with them for a complimentary consultation before making an appointment for any actual treatment. If you can find one that owns yorkies that's the best obviously. Another thing I found out from my vet yesterday was to make sure they have the "staff" and equipment available to properly care for your baby. She said there are so many vets who "cut costs" by not hiring enough staff and support personnel for surgery so that everything is being monitored properly throughout the surgery. Some vets will do it ALL themselves and there is no way one person can adequately monitor the animal and do the surgery. The equipment necessary to monitor vitals and such is also imperaive. It may cost more but I say it is well worth it!! The vet should be able to give you a tour of the facility and point out the machines thay have and what function they peform. Good luck! |

| I am so very sorry this happened to Romeo. I can't imagine how frightened you have been. You have absolutely no reason to feel guilty at all, though. However, as a first time owner as well, I have learned a valuable lesson. Molly and I send prayers and well wishes to you and Romeo. We will keep watching for updates.

| Oh! Oh! I feel so sorry for you! I will stay on this board until you post and tell us how he is doing! I think I would have a heart atttack! When they gave Snoodles rabies along with all the other shots, she cried and cried! I called him back and said she never acted like this before that I couldn't even touch her. So he had me give her 1/4 of a baby aspirin. First he said a half one, but called me back and asked if I had given it to her yet and then said to just give her 1/4 because of her weight! I am just so thankful she never had the reaction your's had. Please! Please! Let us know immediately how he is doing! Meanwhile, I will pray that everyting goes really, really good! Pat |
