Its not your fault, we do what we need to for them and trust our vets know whats the best for our babies. I had the same reaction with a pup when my vets office messed up on a pup and gave lepto in the puppy shot. I know how scary it is to see them so swollen. Hopefully the vet can quickly get it under control. Odds are it was the Lepto in the shot that caused the reaction. (DHLP has lepto) I never use Lepto. Some vets don't know the problems it can cause with toy breeds. Even though I think they should. To be fair though, the vet can't tell which pup will have a reaction to any shot and in some areas Lepto is a real danger even to people. I never advise all shots at once. Rabies is one I advise at 6 months or so but some vets will do it earlier because its the law. Your baby should be fine once they get the swelling down and will probably stay on benadryl or something for a bit. I would advise to always give benadryl prior to any shots from here on out. You may also hang out at the vets office for about 30 min. after the shot was given to be on the safe side. I hope Romeo comes home soon.

okay everyone, they let me bring him home... I even asked if he needed to stay and they said no that I just needed to keep an eye on him this afternoon.....I dont know......the vet wasnt there I dont guess...he didnt even come out and talk to me ,,,his tech did...she said they might need to hold off on the rabies shot next time because that is what caused this.....I was like there will be no need for that we wont be coming back.....but you all take a look ...his eyes look better, still a lil red around the rims, but his muzzle is still enormous....what do you all think?

That poor baby. Bless his heart. I'm glad he's home and safe. Hope he makes a quick recovery. Gosh, makes me think second and third about getting Beau a rabies shot. I'm thinking I won't.

Don't really know! But, I don't think they would let him come home if they didn't feel he would be okay! The vet should have come out and talked to you! That isn't a bit nice! Keep a good watch on him and don't hesitate to call him if you think it isn't going well! I hate leaving my dog at the vet's, so I am glad he is home and hope everything gets better real fast! Pat

Oh, bless his heart! I am so glad you got him home. This might be a good time to contact a few other vets in your area and just ask about their vaccination policies and hw much benadryl they would recommend, etc. You might want to take him with you on a complimentary consultation so they can advise you as to what you should do to care for him from here on. I would definitely not give him another rabies vaccine.

| I have a first aid paper I found on a post on here and it says 1/2 mg per pound, every 8 hrs. Or 1/4 to 1/2 tablet (one hour on empty stomach). I am glad he is home where he can get some TLC. I have been thinking of you all day. Chachi is supposed to get his rabies shot on the next visit. I'm not gonna let them give it now untill hes past four months old.

Really glad to know this, Tucker is also due for his next shots and I think we'll be waiting on the rabies. I think my vet is pretty decent as he advised against the Lepto right off the bat. Very glad your baby is doing better and thanks everybody for all this great info! Dana

More Info... I called the Animal Control for my county and asked what the protocol is for a dog that is allergic to the rabies vaccine and they said the vet can "apply for an exemption". I am sure your new vet could apply for this exemption as well. I don't think you would have to go back to the other one to get this. The new vet can still tell from al the evidence, your statements and pictures and verify that Romeo had an allegic reaction. Then, you are still in compliance with the law but he will never hsve to have another vaccine. They still give him a registration tag.
