| Very strange Rabies reaction This is a little bit delayed as last week was nuts between Kasha and school. Finally taking a break from studying to write this. First background info: Kash is 9 months old, 6.8 lbs (3x her size @12 weeks!!) and got her last set of shots on 5/11 where she weighted about 4lbs. She had a painful reaction to the DHPP & Rabies my idiot former vet gave her at the same time. Last Sunday Kasha and I were hanging out. I touched her shoulder (she's had a lump there which the current vet wasn't worried about since may) and it felt scabby. Checked it out and she was missing just bigger than a quarter sized patch of hair and had a scab which was peeling. I washed it and put some Neosporin on it. Went to the vet the next day and the lesion had grown. The vet didn't think it was ring worm (did a blacklight and sent fungal cultures) but immediately asked where her rabies shot was. Yep, it was in the spot where her booboo is. She just called it a delayed reaction to the vaccine. We treated for the ringworm & the inflammation/ dermatitis w/ prednisone, antifungal/bacterial cream & vitamin E. By Thursday my DBF consulted his mom who suggested a dermatologist. He took her and this vet officially diagnosed her with Localized Vasculitis with a secondary Bacterial Infection. So now she's on * Oral Antibiotics * Prednisone every other day( it causes hair loss) * Melatonin (it helps with hair growth in dogs) * Topical Antibiotics Poor little baby looks like she's been shot in her shoulder. She doesn't seem to be in any pain but I'm just worried. She has years to come of Rabies vaccines which makes me nervous. Neither vet was keen to hop on the holistic train for this but I just wonder if there's something more to do for her which wont drug her up. Anyone else had this reaction? Thanks!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear about the delayed reaction. One of mine had a lump on the injection site but it went away in about 6 weeks time. Maybe they can give her benydryl or something to lessen her reaction.

| Def will have to give benadryl next time. This time the reactions long gone and now it's just inflamed blood vessels and bacteria :-(

| I know this is different and my Eddie was very old at over 14, but when I took him in for his last round of shots he got very lethargic. He just stayed that way until I was afraid he had developed some kind of infection and took him to our vet. He did already have some kidney issues ( I was cooking a special low protein diet for him) at his age and the vet did say that the vaccinations put a lot of stress on our dogs. The vet gave him antibiotics and a large shot of dexamethasone (steroids) and he was like a new dog for about 2 weeks, then he started coughing up blood on a Sunday morning and he was gone. He was doing OK before the shots and it was obvious they took a toll on him. My husband kept telling me he didn't want to get this round, that he felt bad about doing it. But it's the law. What are we supposed to do? |

| Yes, I know exactly what you are going through. So glad it was diagnosed so quickly. Piccolo has Cutaneous Vasculitis caused from over vaccinating. It took over 2 months to get a diagnosis because she did not have a localized bump like that. She had a million other symptoms like itchy paws, runny nose and scabby ears. Just like your pup, she also had a secondary infection, but this was around her lips. She was on Prednisone for nine months and something called Pentoxyfillone for over 2 years. Plus vitamin e and various creams. So glad you were able to go to a Vet Dermatologist for your pup. Please be sure to give us updates. Also wanted to add that Piccolo gets titers now instead of vaccines. The risk is just too great for her to have another vaccine. Bless you and glad things are under control for your little one.

| Now that I think about it I wonder if Ella is having a bad reaction to her shots. We are months away from them now but maybe. I might detox her. I'd hate to pump her up with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications. My oldest reacted like that to his rabies. He's fine thou he's 4 years old and has had another rabies shot since then. And no reaction with that one. He had a bald spot that didn't got away for 2 years. It is finally getting smaller. Off to get a vacc. detox for Ella. |

| Rabies Reaction 2 of my kiddos reacted to their rabies vaccine. One got crusty scabs at the tips of both ears. Went away after a month or so. My little guy developed a bald spot surrounded by crusty skin. 9 months later he still has the bald spot with a some crusty areas. My vet told me it was a problem that they were having with the Fort Dodge brand rabies vaccine & they have quit using that manufacturer. My vet told me that the bald spot may be permanent! Fortunately, it's on his hip & doesn't show if you're not looking for it.

I'd love to do titters ... not sure if I can do it after one round of shots but we will see because never mind her bald patch ... but no more bad reactions. Thanks everyone for your sympathies ... it is really scary what these shots can do to our little babies. It doesn't happen all the time but the fact that it happens this much worries me. I'm not sure what brand of vaccine this was but kismit53 your pups reaction sounds like the same thing. I'll post a picture tomorrow so y'all will know what her "GSW" looks like.

It is scary about prednisone, but it saved my Piccolo's life, when nothing else would work. So, it was a calculated risk and really my only choice. The Vet Dermatologist worked very carefully with her and monitored while she was on such high doses. It has been 9 months since she has been on anything except Vitamin e, so even though this is an auto-immune disease, it is in remission right now. How is your little one doing now? Is your pup lethargic at all? How is the secondary infection doing?

| Sprocket's Rabies Reaction Here's what Sprocket's reaction looks like. There's still no sign of any new hair growth.

Wylie has a vasculitis spot in the same basic area, but it has no brown areas...just thicker skin and hairless (like the size of a nickel). I believe both of these are from rabies .

Piccolo had those little black spots too and went bald in many areas all over her body, since hers was not localized. But, almost all her hair grew back and i was thrilled. The only thing she has left are black scars in her ears. (Which could easily be mistaken for winter ear or whatever it is called.) Wonder if someday we could have an educational thread or sticky about vaccine-induced vasculitis? Maybe it could help others...
